How to Help Teens Overcome a Smartphone Addiction Believe it or not, smartphone use can be beneficial for teens. Teens use smartphones to connect with peers, seek help on school assignments, and they can even use apps to help them get organized. Although it might seem like teens are constantly connected, many use their devices within healthy limits. It’s important to empower teens to take control of their own use of smartphones and create and maintain a healthy balance. This isn’t a one-time conversation. A few things you can do to help provide guidance and support includes the following: Educate: Talk openly about the benefits and potential pitfalls of screen time. Lecturing rarely yields positive results, but asking your teens for input about the pros and cons can spark lively conversations. How does too much screen time affect us physically, emotionally, academically, and socially? What can we gain from using our smartphones responsibly? Make a plan: Talk about setting healthy limits and boundaries for the family and what checks and balances you can use to stick to them, like not allowing phone use during dinner. Remember, teens aren’t the only ones prone to overuse. What happens if parents are pushing the family screen time limits? FB Eagle Update Disappearance of Thulane Update and Photograph by Johann van den Berg It is with sadness that the Project must announce the disappearance of Thulane, the male Black Eagle. He was last seen by Project Monitors on Saturday 8th June in the late afternoon. When he was not seen at all during the following day, the Project was not too concerned, as Thulane has been known to “disappear” on occasions, sometimes for more than a day at a time. We continued to monitor the situation, but as the days went by, our hope started failing. Extensive searching for signs of the male have been done in known hunting areas but revealed nothing. In the meantime, Makatsa was on the nest incubating the eggs, only leaving the nest every few hours for between 2 and 5 minutes. We expected the first egg to hatch around the 11th or 12th June. On the 13th June we had confirmation that there was a chick on the nest. Makatsa started leaving the nest for longer periods and was observed returning with prey. We will never know if the second egg hatched or not, but our main concern is if she will be able to sustain herself and the chick. At the time of writing this article, the chick is around 23 days old, and mother and child are doing fine. As for how long she will be able to look after herself and the chick is unknown. We are monitoring the situation all the time. Since the project started in 1992, two adult birds have been replaced. Quatele disappeared in 1998 and was replaced by Thulane. Emonyeni disappeared in 2016 and was replaced by Makatsa. Makatsa with prey. We can only hope that this setback will have a good outcome and to keep the Black Eagles flying.
