                   FOR Friday, September 17th, 2021

TODAY IS...
  • NATIONAL POW/MIA RECOGNITION DAY (3rd Friday in September) -
Honoring the members of the U-S Armed Forces who remain missing in action or prisoners
of war. There are currently more than 81,600 Americans missing from recent wars and
      conflicts around the world.

  • NATIONAL PROFESSIONAL HOUSE CLEANERS DAY - For all the people who
work so hard cleaning up after you. Make their day a little brighter and pick up your own
      damn socks!

  • NATIONAL HUG YOUR BOSS DAY (NOTE: DATE CHANGES ANNUALLY) - If
you can get close enough to your boss without wanting to strangle them, try giving ‘em a hug
(or maybe just a virtual one). DID YOU KNOW? A recent study found 60 percent of
Americans say they like their job because of their boss (that means 40 percent of bosses
      must really suck?!).

  • CONSTITUTION DAY/CITIZENSHIP DAY - A double observance: commemorating
the day the Constitution of the United States was signed back in 1787. Also today, wave the
Stars ’n Stripes for those who have become U-S citizens! Sadly, not a holiday.

  • NATIONAL APPLE DUMPLING DAY - Don’t you dare call this a turnover! An apple
dumpling is a peeled, cored apple dusted with cinnamon and wrapped in pastry.

SATURDAY IS…
  • AIR FORCE DAY -- The Air Force became its own branch of the US military on
September 18, 1947 (Yes, they had planes back then, smart ass!). Today, the US Air Force
has nearly 330-thousand active members and, at last count, operates more than 5-thousand
military aircraft, and more than 400 Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (so, don’t
even think about messing with them).
CLICK HERE FOR THE AIR FORCE HYMN (AND SOAR INTO THE ‘WILD BLUE YONDER’
• NATIONAL CHEESEBURGER DAY -- What’s better than a burger?… A burger with
some cheese! They think the cheeseburger was invented back in 1926, at a sandwich shop
in Pasadena, California but a trademark for the name was awarded to Colorado’s Humpty
      Dumpty Drive-In in 1935.

  • NATIONAL HIV/AIDS AND AGING AWARENESS DAY -- Highlighting the medical
breakthroughs that allow more people with HIV to live longer. Today, an estimated 24
percent of HIV/AIDS patients are over 55, something doctors didn’t think was even possible
      a couple of decades ago.

  • NATIONAL DANCE DAY (3rd Saturday In September) -- Throw on a beat, break
out your best moves and dance like nobody’s watching! The day was created to promote
body movement and a healthy lifestyle (but also ‘rump shaking’).

  • NATIONAL GYMNASTICS DAY (3rd Saturday in September) -- Gymnastics has
been a competitive sport for more than 2-thousand years. It started with the ancient Greeks
      - and back then they did it naked (which didn’t allow for much in the way of … ’jiggle
      suppression’).

  • ANNIVERSARY OF THE BIRTH OF CBS NEWS (1927) -- CBS News was born 94
years ago today! By 1929, CBS started regular hourly radio broadcasts, which are still heard
today. The CBS World News Roundup launched in 1938 and remains America’s longest-
      running regularly scheduled news program.

  • START OF OKTOBERFEST (CANCELED!) -- Tell the Oompah-pah band they can
stay home! Oktoberfest has been canceled again. The annual German festival celebrates
the autumn harvest …and beer. Lots and lots of beer. Hey - at least you can still do that at
      home, right?

  • PRIMETIME EMMY AWARDS (CBS) (8PM ET) -- Tonight, it’s the Primetime Emmy
awards on CBS. The show will broadcast live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles
with a limited audience. Cedric the Entertainer will be, umm…entertaining us as the show’s
host. They’ll also try to salvage ratings from last year’s record-low viewer turnout. Netflix,
HBO and Disney+ lead the contenders with the most nominations. “Mare of Easttown,” “The
Queen’s Gambit” and “WandaVision” are up a pile of awards, including Best Limited Series.

  • INTERNATIONAL TALK LIKE A PIRATE DAY -- Shiver me timbers! Today you can
talk like a pirate at work without someone threatening to make you walk the plank. Just for
fun, ask the drive-thru attendant if they have change for a gold doubloon. Ahoy, Matey!

• BATMAN DAY -- Celebrating the Anniversary of the first Batman comic, released 82

 • ANNIVERSARY OF THE HOLLYWOOD SIGN (1923) -- The Hollywood Sign turns
98 today! It was built in 1923 but back then it said ‘Hollywoodland’ and was actually an ad
for a new housing development. Each letter is 45 feet tall. In the 30s, an actress famously
killed herself by jumping off the ‘H’. By the 1970s, the sign was a mess, until Playboy
publisher (and silk pajama-enthusiast) Hugh Hefner raised 250-thousand bucks to fix it. It’s
been a beloved LA landmark ever since.
