Connect December 2020 • Issue 113 Keeping you up to date with news from Buller District Council Holiday message from Mayor Jamie Cleine As 2020 draws to a close it is timely to reflect on what has been an extraordinary year as a result of the global pandemic and New Zealand’s response to that. I would like to thank the Buller community for the way we all pulled together as part of the team of five million. The support you provided each other, your neighbours and our business community was outstanding and has strengthened our ability to recover quickly. Buller is one of the leading lights in the post-Covid recovery to date. Of course we have uncertainty and some sectors of society are under pressure. What is clear from the statistics is Buller has been a very strong performer in almost every measure compared to both our West Coast neighbours and nationally. The government response to Covid has also been extraordinary for our district with funds made available for business support and infrastructure investment. Council has over $20m in additional projects to deliver over the coming 18-months providing stimulus to our economy and progress on some key strategic plans that will enable a more diverse future for the district. The Mayors Taskforce for Jobs has been a very rewarding project that has allowed me to assist young people into employment and our local businesses confidence to employ staff. To date this program has assisted 40-50 sustainable jobs right across the district. Council is committed to making decisions that progress this district and anticipate 2021 being another extremely busy year. I encourage you to take time over the Christmas period to reflect on how fortunate we are to live in Buller as you enjoy the holiday with family and friends. I would like to thank the community for the support you provide to Council and our staff, the success of our district will always require a team effort. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous 2021.
