Congratulations to the Farwell High School Class of 2021 Congratulations to the graduating Farwell High School Class of 2021 and thank you to all the families, community members, educators, support staff, mentors, coaches, organizations, businesses, and scholarship donors who helped these students in their journey. This is truly a celebration for everyone! Every spring we (as a school and community) are reminded how extraordinary our seniors are, and we rejoice in them accomplishing their goals and venturing forward in pursuit of their dreams. As a community we are invested in our youth and through scholarships, we can assist them in advancing their knowledge, confidence, and skills in pursuit of a better tomorrow. While we celebrate our seniors, it is important to express our gratitude towards the businesses, organizations, and individuals that make these opportunities possible. Without them, students would have an additional financial hurdle to face in their path to success. The impact of these scholarships goes well beyond a monetary value. It is a vote of confidence that our donors believe in our seniors and their future success. As a counselor, I am so grateful to all of our collegiate and community scholarship donors that reach out and help build that bridge for our students. Receiving these scholarships is an acknowledgement of our seniors’ hard work and dedication. Thank you very much for supporting the students of Farwell High School! As for the graduating Class of 2021, my wish for you is that one day you too will be able to “Pay It Forward” and help out young graduates ready to spread their wings. I challenge each and every one of you to reflect on your K-12 experiences and take those lessons and words of wisdom out into the real world and make the most of every single day. Don’t be afraid to reach outside of your comfort zone. Life is not always going to be easy, and success is not going to be handed to you; but each day is an opportunity for progress. Don’t just settle for mediocrity. Strive to be competent, caring, creative, innovative, and genuine. Good luck to all of you in your future endeavors. It is now time to SOAR! With Eagle Pride, Mrs. Rohdy

Future Contractor Scholarship – Vincent White Congratulations to Vincent White, the winner of the Future Contractor Scholarship sponsored by the California Contractors Insurance Services for $750. Vincent was selected as one of six finalists for his essay on outdated building codes and how to change them. Based upon public vote, Vincent won the award with 162 votes, winning 28% of all votes cast. Vincent is the son of Amanda Anderson and Doug White. He plans to attend Mid Michigan College next year for a degree in business. “The Future Contractors Scholarship launched in 2018, encouraging students to consider a degree and career focused in the construction industry. CCIS selected six finalists for the 2021 spring scholarship to be voted on. The public had the opportunity to choose whose essay was their favorite. Vincent White is a senior at Farwell High School but is also currently enrolled in the early college program at Mid Michigan College. What he enjoys most about his studies is the challenging himself every step of the way. When Vincent is presented with a problem he wants to tackle it head on and is determined to find a resolution. Vincent has been a member of his school bands for 8 years, track and field teams for 6 years. Outside of school, Vincent manages a Discord chat app server with 250+ members that strives to provide assistance with those struggling with school work. He's also spent a summer working in the construction industry, which he found incredibly rewarding. Read Vincent's winning essay below: Outdated Regulations and Codes: In construction and as a contractor, we have to obey the regulations and codes that are set, for reasons from energy efficiency to safety. But overtime, these regulations get outdated, with new techniques, better equipment and building standards, these regulations need to be updated. Arizona is no exception to this. So today, let's dive into Arizona’s energy efficiency building codes. First off, they barely have one. The 2012 IECC code is not mandatorily enforced by any means and is not a statewide code. This means that the code in place is accepted by each community, and new buildings are not checked if standards are being met. This in turn, allows buildings with low standards to exist, and be allowed in new constructions. On top of this, there is no requirement for new construction to even include such standards. With no enforcement and no state-wide rule, the likelihood of lasting change, and improving the energy efficiency of buildings is low. This has a big impact on the amount of fossil fuels we waste heating and cooling Arizonian’s buildings. This could easily be changed by mandating that all new buildings must be constructed with the 2018 IECC codes or newer, and making it a statewide requirement, with enforcement needed to finalize the building. This will save even more than the projected $270 million saved by 2030, save homeowners hundreds, if not thousands of dollars; and improve quality of life with cooler homes in the summer and warmer homes in the winter faster. Even better is if the United States accepted codes similar to California nationwide. As California has the steepest energy efficiency regulations, as of last year all new construction includes solar. If this was adopted nationwide, there could be millions, if not hundreds of millions of dollars saved, and energy bills across the nation would drop. Some states don’t even have energy efficiency codes. So, let's fix these outdated regulations, and make statewide energy efficient regulations mandatory, enforce them, and keep them up to date. Abigail Bass and Kaden Lewis Earn the Al Patterson Memorial Golf Scholarship Abigail Bass and Kaden Lewis are the two recipients of the 2021 Al Patterson Memorial Golf Scholarship for $500. The scholarship began with the graduating Class of 2010 in honor of Al Patterson, a Farwell teacher and coach, who lost his battle with cancer. Mr. Patterson’s wish was to continue to support FHS students as they pursue their post- secondary dreams of higher education. Coach Patterson was passionate about the game of golf, and his golfers held a special place in his heart. His favorite saying was “Never leave a birdie putt short.” Applicants were asked to write about how this phrase applies to their lives. In addition to the essay, applicants had to be involved in high school golf, demonstrate community service, and have a 3.0 gpa or higher. Abigail: I believe that the saying “Never Leave a Birdie Putt Short” relates to the idea of taking chances with everything that comes your way, no matter if it’s in the actual game of golf or if it is in your general life. Never do something to just be done with it, and finish what you have started and see it through to the end. …. To never give up in my life means to never compromise on my most important values. … If I gave up and compromised on everything that I did, then I would never learn the life lessons that I would learn from my failures. In golf you improve on the mistakes that you make. If your putt goes a little bit to the left, you adjust next time and aim a little bit towards the right. So with every stroke that I take towards my goals in my life in the future, I will not give up. The birdie putt will never be short in my game, and my goals will only be one putt away. Kaden: The saying “Never Leave A Birdie Putt Short” is one that I have been hearing throughout my life from my grandfather, who was a friend of Al Patterson. When I first heard it, I thought it was just a saying to help you become a better golfer, but now that I am older I understand that it also pertains to every aspect of life. In golf, to leave a birdie putt short is to never have a chance to make that putt and achieve a birdie because you didn’t put enough effort into the shot. … In my everyday life it means that when I have a chance to reach greatness, I need to make sure I put in enough effort to achieve it. The worst thing you can do is to have the opportunity to succeed but put in too little effort, making it so you did not have a chance for success from the beginning. When you put too little effort into things, you will never know what could have been accomplished. … I hope to never leave a birdie putt short in my “game of life.” Abigail is the daughter of Carrie and Gene Bass. She is a four-year golfer and has been part of the Junior Golf Program. She is also a four-year participant in Band, Class/Student Council, and Science Olympiad. Abigail is the president of National Honor Society, vice-president of her class, a drum major, and editor of the yearbook. In addition, she is part of Melodic Fusion and is employed at Buccilli’s Pizza of Farwell. Graduating with High Honors, Abigail plans to participate in the 5th year Early College Program and then transfer to Central Michigan University for Healthcare Administration. Kaden is the son of Hugh and Darcie Lewis. He is a four-year golfer and is part of the Junior Golf Program. He truly enjoys his time volunteering and helping young golfers learn to appreciate the game. Kaden is a four-year athlete in football and participated in bowling for three years. He is a member of National Honor Society and the Jack Pine All Academic First Team. Graduating with High Honors, Kaden plans to participate in the 5th year Early College Program and then transfer to Saginaw Valley State University to earn his Bachelor’s in Nursing. Vincent White Earns Son’s of the American Legion Squadron 404 Endowed Scholarship Vincent White, the son of Amanda Anderson and Douglas White Jr., is the recipient of the Son's of the American Legion Squadron 404 Endowed Scholarship sponsored through the Midland Foundation. The scholarship recognizes graduating seniors that are leaders in their communities and have a parent or grandparent that served in the military. Vincent's father, Douglas White Jr., served in the United States Army. While reflecting on what his father's military service meant to him, Vincent wrote, "For as long as I can remember, my dad has always talked about his time in the military. Whether it was the long miles he had to run or the gas chamber training, he shared his experiences with me. He told me how he earned the Army Achievement Medal. While most of his unit was sent off to Bosnia, there was an upcoming inspection that his site was unprepared for. My dad worked in the motor pool where he reorganized all of the books and logs and met/surpassed all the standards of the inspection doing it completely alone. Because of his military experiences, my father gained amazing time management skills, determination, punctuality, and structure. While I was not born during the time he was serving, I know without a doubt that he would not be the same man he is today without the experience." Vincent is a high honors graduate and a leader amongst his peers. Always willing to volunteer, Vincent is counted on by both staff and students alike. He is involved in band, Melodic Fusion, quiz bowl, and track. After high school, Vincent plans to attend Mid Michigan College to earn a business degree and go into carpentry. Bradin Maxey Awarded the Paesens Memorial Scholarship Bradin Maxey, the son of Joe and Renae Maxey, has been awarded the Paesens Memorial Scholarship for $2000 in honor of Kap Paesens and his parents, Kerwin and Maxine Paesens. The Paesens' family is well known throughout our school and the community for their generosity and steadfast support. Educators themselves, they stressed the importance of academics, leadership, and service throughout their lifetimes. Kerwin L. Paesens served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and principal at Farwell Area High School from 1953-1974. He coached football, basketball, and track, and the Farwell athletic complex and outstanding male student athlete award are both named in his honor. Maxine Paesens was a first grade teacher at Farwell Elementary. After her retirement she continued to volunteer as a tutor, working with students in the school's reading programs. She donated her time at the Farwell Historical Museum and held numerous positions at the Farwell United Methodist Church. Kap Paesens, a 1968 Farwell graduate, followed his parents' example and was devoted to his family, friends, and his community. In addition to supporting the schools, Kap was part of the Farwell United Methodist Church Board, the Midstatesmen Barbershop Chapter of the Gratiot County Harmony Society, and Meals on Wheels. While he held many jobs throughout his lifetime, one of the largest impacts he made was serving the students at both Farwell and Clare Schools as an athletic trainer. He touched the lives of countless student athletes with his tape, treats, encouraging words, or simply a listening ear. He was inducted into the Clare Athletic Hall of Fame for his service and will forever be remembered for his kindness and generosity. The entire Paesens' family bleeds purple and gold, and they take great joy in celebrating the accomplishments of our Eagle athletes. For Kap, Bradin was one of those special athletes. Their bond began years ago, as the two families were very close. Kap could always be found on the sidelines supporting Bradin and his fellow classmates, just as the Maxey family was on his sideline, assisting Kap and his mother, Maxine, with anything they needed. It was Kap's wish to honor Bradin with this scholarship and help him pursue his future endeavors. Bradin is a triple- threat athlete having participated for four years in football, basketball, and baseball. In addition, he was a member of the bowling team, the bass club, forestry, and CTE where he just earned the Welding Above and Beyond Award. Outside of school, Bradin is employed at Buccilli's Pizza of Farwell. An honors student, Bradin plans to participate in the Early College Fifth Year Program at Mid Michigan College to complete his welding degree and become a welder/ironworker. Athletics has been a huge part of Bradin's life ever since he could walk. He believes that sports build character and leadership. Just like it was for Kap, Bradin understands that being a leader comes with responsibility. It is important to practice good sportsmanship, maintain solid grades, and follow through to the very end no matter what the scoreboard may say. Bradin hopes that he can be as helpful to his community as Kap and his parents were to Farwell. We have no doubt that Kap's legacy of generosity will live on through Bradin. He will make Kap proud.
