PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Where will your passion take you…. This week we have been focussing on our Year 8 and 9 students who have been choosing their preferred curriculum for examinations next year and in 2023. You all know that at Mounts Bay we believe that anything is possible and we want everyone in our community to feel like they have the limitless potential to grow and follow their passions. We want all of our students to use those passions in their learning because let’s face it, if you enjoy your work, it ceases to be onerous. We believe that for everyone in the school, regardless of background or starting point, achieving the highest academic standards in subjects they enjoy will help them become equipped with the values, attitudes and attributes that will serve them well in higher education, the workplace and their lives. We have always tried to provide our students with a curriculum that will enable them to go out and take on the world as it exists when they leave us. But the world has changed and nobody could have predicted what would happen over the last 18 months, that is why it is so important that we give the young people in our care the chance to express themselves. We value your feedback and on the whole it was very positive. “You are great at communicating what you have been up to as a school, how our children are performing and advertising clubs and up-coming trips and adventures, we really enjoy discussing and celebrating this with our children primarily through the newsletter and the excellent EduLink App.” However, we also take note of the fact that some of you feel that we need to streamline the number of methods that we have to talk to you and provide useful information. Historically this has been because of the limited take-up we have had in the past with ParentMail. This is another thing that lock-down has changed and we now feel confident that we can reach most parents though it, so will be moving more and more of our communication to it starting with next week’s newsletter. Next week is the last week before half-term and we will be wishing our Class of 2021 goodbye as they leave us to explore their passions. I intend to spend this weekend enjoying some of the passions that I haven’t been able to undertake during the restrictions, I hope you get a chance to too. Best wishes Les Hall - Academy Principal
A WORD FROM MR ROYLE Best wishes to our brilliant Year 11 students who have shown resilience and fortitude throughout the year and have coped well with everything that Covid has thrown at them. Friday will be their last day of formal lessons and we wish them well as they move towards their important leaving activities. The Leavers’ Ball at Tregenna as well as the leavers’ Assembly and then looking forward to results day in August. I hope that they have a good week and that they leave with dignity and pride providing an example for students in Years 7 - 10. Good luck to the class of 2021! Talking of Pride, there is lots to look forward to - a really exciting event with which we want to get involved is the LGB T #Prideinyourworkplace event at Penwith College on 30th June and I am hoping to take a group of students to this event. Covid Schools Group has hit the LGBTQ+ group really hard as they are a mixed year s Gathering 2021 group and so being in bubbles has stopped their meeting up. Wednesday 30 We are now able to relax some of the restrictions and so if there th Hosted at June are any students who might have been members of the group Penwith before lockdown or are interested in knowing some more, then do let me know. It does not matter if you identify as gay or College straight, male or female, or possibly you simply don’t know - all Penzance are welcome! If you want you r school to tak speak with you e part then r school LGBT email: Helpline Group or I am also delighted to learn about 8 Pegasus and their appeal #PrideInYourW @intercomtrus t.org.uk for reading glasses for Malawi - do check out the article o rkplace elsewhere in this newsletter and scour your house for any old reading glasses that can be recycled and used in Africa. Punctuality is getting better and better and the vast majority of students are now all in their classroom and learning by 8:30 am when school starts. Compared to my first Friday night late detention a few weeks ago, when there were 20 or so students in the hall, there were fewer than five students joining me tonight to make up time due to persistent lateness this week. Please could we ask anyone who would like to travel on the MBA50, MBA51 or MBA52 or any of the MBA minibuses to pay their bus fees this week so that we can issue a bus pass for next half term. A reminder that the current bus pass (with a blue stripe down the side) will not be valid after Friday 28th May. New bus passes will be issued next week to those who have paid via ParentMail. Enjoy your week away and we are all looking forward to the first performance of the wonderful Year 7 Band as we return after half term to our third project week of 2020/21 in preparation for the much anticipated Eco Festival on Friday 11th June Keep well and #BeKind
BE INSPIRED Brilliant Club Scholars Programme Year 10 Scholars embarked on their first sessions of tutorials this week with their PhD Tutors from Swansea and Exeter Universities. It focussed on specialist subject areas that will challenge and develop our students’ knowledge and ability to critically analyse different topics. Where Should Healthcare Money Be Spent? Why Don't People Speak Cornish Anymore? We have two groups running: the first group is challenging themselves on the cost effectiveness and technical efficiency of a design initiative and the second group is analysing the evolution of language and the social, economical and political influence in their development. We wish all students well with their progress. Report by: Miss Masters
BE INSPIRED Cake Sale Success 7 Chamaeleon recently raised £103.92 for Children’s Hospice South West by holding a cake sale. Well done! Report by: Mr Veal Cricket Podcast on BBC Year 8 student Jack was featured on BBC Radio Cornwall last weekend. The Cricket Podcast he made during Project Week in Lockdown was part of a short feature on the effects of lockdown on cricket. Well done Jack! Click here for the podcast. Report by: Mr Kent
BE CURIOUS Grow Your Own This week in the MBA garden we have been celebrating getting stuck into proper harvests. Traditionally March, April and May are known as the 'hungry gap' when there are very little harvests of fruit and vegetables available. The winter plants have all been picked and cleared, and the summer harvests are still not quite ready. However our lettuce, peas for shoots, spinach and radish have put on a real growth over the last weeks and are ready for picking. I think this is due to our allotment being very sheltered and South facing, as the same plants are not doing so well in my garden at home. The students have been learning about picking salad bags to sell to staff, how to make a good product, and looking at some business aspects of growing and selling vegetables to cover the costs of seeds, compost and tools. In the poly tunnel the new potatoes that we planted back in January and February are now ready to harvest. We have had a good crop of early Swift, Rocket and Casablanca varieties. It has been a really good experiment in what veg we can grow over winter in the tunnel, and although we only got around 30 from each bucket it was still a worthwhile thing to do. Interestingly the Casablanca variety produced a lot more than the other two. Report by: Mr New
BE CURIOUS Grow Your Own All the winter plants have now been cleared in the tunnel apart from a few left to seed. This week the students loved spreading old manure over the beds ready to feed the soil and support all the summer plants ready to go in for the next few months. As we are running a no-dig garden, the manure is just laid on top around 2" deep. The worms will take the nutrients down into the soil over the next few weeks, and we don't disturb the balance of the underlying soil structure. Our courgettes have been planted out after 'hardening' off for a few days outside, and we have so many lovely plants that we are selling them to staff. It's a good week to plant out courgettes, squash and pumpkins now the frosts have finished. Also make sure you have sown your beans ready to plant out over the next couple of weeks. Report by: Mr New
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 8 Event Production Club This club is a great opportunity for Year 8 students to learn how to set up and run sound and lighting for school productions such as Live Music Friday, the 24 Hour Gig, Karaoke and the DeTox Festival as well as many other events. You will learn how to use professional equipment. You will get to learn what everything is and how it’s used, from mixing desks to lights. Come along and see how everything happens backstage. Make the magic happen! Email: cwilliams@mountsbay.org for more details. Event Production Club - Thursdays - Year 8 - The Music Block Report by: Morgan
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 7 Drama Club Drama Club has started and the passion and enthusiasm to create performances has been fabulous. After just three weeks students have re-written 'Ring a Ring a Roses' (a nursery rhyme about the plague) to produce a modern version based around the current pandemic. All words and actions were created and choreographed by the students. Example verse: People social distance, (Big step back) They don’t want quarantine, (Hands out to side) A temperature a temperature, (Back of hand to forehead – left then right) We all lockdown. (Drop hands and head) The club takes place after school on a Wednesday and there are still a few spaces remaining if you’d like to join us. Report by: Miss Dowrick
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 10 Food and Catering Room 15 was buzzing with excitement in this week’s Year 10 food lessons, and the reason was because we were making pizza's from scratch. This meant making the dough for the pizza base, with some students even making their own tomato sauce. The aroma from the room was wonderful and filled the top end of the school. Mrs Richards even popped in to check on what the Year 10 students were making. Report by: Miss Osborne
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 9 Fast Track Catering Year 9 Food students were very busy this week during their triple lesson preparing both savoury and dessert buffet dishes for the staff CARTS team. This was an opportunity to showcase their knowledge of flavour combinations and the high level skills they had learnt during the course. Students chose to cook a wide range of dishes including vegetarian and meat quiches, honey sticky chicken and a joint of beef, which was cooked beautifully to go into homemade Yorkshire puddings with homemade horseradish sauce. The dessert varied from profiteroles to cheesecakes and lemon posset to a beautifully decorated and moist chocolate cake. Report by: Miss Osborne
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 9 Fast Track Catering I am so proud of how the students managed their time to get the spread ready for 1.00pm for the staff to enjoy. This was also an opportunity for the faculty to get together to say goodbye to Mr Cook, who has been an inspiration and encouraged the Year 9 students to develop their skills in so many ways. He will be missed in the department. I wish him every success in his next school. Report by: Miss Osborne
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 9 Fast Track Drama Year 9 Fast Track Drama students have been preparing for their Live Performance Unit for their RSLCert Level 2 qualification in Acting. They have focussed on the global and historical symbolism of the number seven in societies and cultures. They have prepared a piece that moves from exploring fun with sevens, to examining Ghandi’s ‘Seven Blunders of the World’ to a final sequence that asks what of the Seventh Generations to come and asks its audience to consider the future and their part in that. WE ARE THE SEVEN AND WE ARE HERE TO TELL OUR TALE Report by: Miss Claxton
BE CREATIVE BE CREATIVE Year 9 Fast Track Drama They have been exploring the genre of Physical Theatre and have been particularly inspired by Theatre Company ‘Off Balance’ and their innovative physical theatre performance of Robin Hood. Below are some shots of the group in rehearsal, demonstrating their ensemble approach to the theme in their choice of tableaux for transitions from one seven to another. BE COMPETITIVE British Lion Well they say lightning doesn’t strike twice… not at MBA! Huge congratulations to former student Luke Cowan-Dickie who has recently been announced as one of the players to tour South Africa this summer with the British and Irish Lions. I cannot think that there are many schools in the country that have produced two England Internationals let alone two British Lions. An incredible achievement and we wish Luke all the very best for the tour. Rugby 7s Former MBA student Deborah Fleming has been featured on the BBC Sport website. Deborah, who was looking forward to competing in the Olympics in Tokyo Games, faced having her rugby career stall during the pandemic. She talks about her experiences during the pandemic, her signing for Saracens and her hopes for the future. https://www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/57113654.amp Report by: Mr Veal
BE COMPETITIVE Riding Star! On Saturday 15th May Year 8 student Austyn finished 4th in his class at the Moreton Horse Trails in Dorchester. This was an amazing result as he was competing against over forty other competitors, most of whom were adults. Austyn will be competing again this weekend at the the British Riding Clubs National Arena Eventing Championships at Aston Le Walls. Report by: Mrs Davies
BE ENVIRONMENTAL Because it’s our planet This week the Eco Team have been preparing for the Detox Festival which will take place on Friday 11th June. The Gardening Team and Alfie have been planting some plants to sell on our plant stall, and Bella has been busy organising a cake stall! The Wildlife Group have started to re-wild the woods, and we are setting it up for the Detox Festival! We have been identifying lots of plants and we have been naming different parts of the woods. We will be holding a competition to name the woods at the Detox Festival. This week we have had a visit from ecologists who have helped us identify plants and animals in the woods, as well as a lady from the Cornwall Wildlife Trust. We have found many baby sycamore and oak trees in the woods. There are so many! We hope we can make the woods into a lovely nature-friendly place for animals and plants to thrive and to help with student learning at Mounts Bay Academy. Report by: The Eco Team

TASSOMAI YOUR WAY TO SUCCESS Tassomai is an intelligent online learning program helping students at all levels achieve outstanding results. Using Tassomai builds knowledge, boosts confidence and reduces exam stress. All students have to do is spend 15 minutes a day answering questions. It doesn’t matter if they get it wrong because Tassomai has an algorithm that works with each individual student and this produces a Tassomai Tree, which is a new feature to visualise learner knowledge acquisition - each leaf represents a question, which is colour-coded relating to how well the student performed in that question! Tassomai is available to all Year 10 and 11 students. Here are the Top 10 for Years 10 and 11 this week - based on total number of Progress (HPL for all these students!) A number of our colleagues are planning to do some fundraising, to help get Paul, a service veteran paralysed in a freak accident in 2019, back home. Without your help Paul faces a future permanently isolated from his family, his home, his life, you can change that. On 20th November 2019 Paul experienced an extremely traumatic life changing accident while windsurfing resulting in a severe spinal cord injury. Initially Paul was in hospital in Derriford and then Salisbury and for the past 12 months, while back in Cornwall, he and his wife have been unable to meet due to the Pandemic, in fact, she has seen Paul for just six hours in 15 months! Due to his spinal injury being incomplete it will take a very long time, years rather than months, for Paul to experience any recovery. There is a lot of equipment and physiotherapy Paul will need and if we can help towards this in any way, it would be fantastic. We would like to help with the costs of getting the house reformed so Paul can return home. We would also like to help pay for physiotherapy sessions at a hydrotherapy pool as Kate knows that hydrotherapy will be a massive help for Paul. The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity have set up a JustGiving page here: “letsgetpaulmorrishome”. Here is our progress so far: We will each be completing miles (some walking others cycling, running, climbing, swimming, kayaking, surfing and others just counting their steps etc), to completely travel the coast of the UK (12,429km/7723miles). We started over the Easter holidays. Each week we will let you know our accumulated distance and ask that you either sponsor us per mile or give a general donation. Report by: Miss Dowrick
