In this Section From the St John's Campus Principal Luminary Lunch OSHC July Vacation Care Fullarton Park Community Centre Parenting Sessions Student Achievement From the St John's Campus Principal So good to be home! Welcome back to school and the beginning of Term 3. I hope that you managed to find some time for rest and refreshment during the three-week school break. It certainly has been a strange start to our term, and it is good to now be back ‘on-site’ at school. Your support and encouragement during these past days has been greatly appreciated. I want to also acknowledge and thank all of our staff for their amazing efforts in implementing our move into “Connected Learning’ last week. If you have any constructive feedback relating to Connected Learning please email this to rmuldoon@concordia.sa.edu.au Late last week my wife, Jacquie, and I returned from a few weeks of Long Service Leave holidaying in the Northern Territory and visiting family. It was wonderful to be able to catch up with loved ones, including a new 7-week-old grandson! Face-to- face time with family, particularly when they live in another state, is always very special and we certainly appreciated the opportunity to reconnect. Another benefit of being in the Territory was the lovely warm weather that we enjoyed, with most of our days spent in shorts and a tee shirt. This was highlighted when we checked in on the SA BOM site a few times and noted the bitterly cold temperatures Adelaide was experiencing. All of this being said, we were both very pleased to return to SA last week, even knowing that our state would be in lockdown. Being away from home during these unsettling COVID-19 times was challenging and we both experienced a great sense of relief as we finally stepped into our house after arriving back in Adelaide. The security and comfort afforded by being in your own home is hard to explain, but it certainly was something very real for both of us. This recent experience got me thinking about the concept of security and the importance that it holds in my life. During challenging and unsettling times, I often find myself seeking for something to ‘hold onto’, something that will provide me with a sense of security. The world that we live in sometimes suggests possible sources for this security … ‘winning the lotto’ (financial wealth), status and fame, a flash new car, success in business or in other pursuits, popularity… and the list can go on. While all of these things, in and of themselves, are not bad things, my experience is that they have not been able to
provide me with that real foundation of security and peace that I often long for. As a Christian I am often reminded of the deep sense of security and peace that is available to me through Jesus and through all he has done for me. His love for me, his acceptance of me (despite my many flaws), his forgiveness of me and his promise to always be with me all combine to provide a strong foundation and real security for living in a turbulent and sometimes harsh world. As we step into a new term, one that that will undoubtedly present its share of challenges, my prayer for our community is that Jesus will continue to walk with us. I pray that his grace, comfort, protection, forgiveness, strength and security would be with us all. I wish you and your family blessings for the term ahead and look forward to catching up with you soon. I love you, Lord God, and you make me strong. You are my mighty rock, my fortress, my protector, the rock where I am safe, my shield, my powerful weapon, and my place of shelter. - Psalm 18:1-2 Michael Paech Principal - St John's Campus Luminary Lunch On Wednesday 23 June, a group of 20 Year 5 students attended a Luminary Lunch at St Peter’s College. This was an inaugural event where students sat with local authors and illustrators over lunch. Jack Heath, an author from Sydney, was the keynote speaker. On arrival the tables were decorated, the students and authors walked the pink carpet, and they had a group photo taken with the author that they were sitting with. A hot delicious lunch was enjoyed by all. Students chatted with the author, asked questions and had an opportunity to get books signed as well. Students also received a goody bag to take home. A wonderful excursion! Nolene Gehling Resource Manager for Learning and Teaching OSHC July Vacation Care Vacation Care this July was an exciting, adventurous and fun-filled three weeks! We were fortunate to be able to head out as normal and visit some of our favourite places such as Latitude, AFL Max,
Mitcham Cinemas, Monarto Zoo, Thebarton Ice Skating and more! We did all sorts of activities back at OSHC such as candle making, tie dye t-shirts, building race car tracks, cooking, arts and craft, and we even celebrated ‘Christmas in July’. We were lucky to get some days outside in the sunshine and spent some of our rainy days in the Senior School Gym doing gymnastics, cricket, basketball, dodgeball and more! This school holidays, we also hired some VR headsets, Rev it Up Racing, Daytona Cars, Pinball and a Jukebox Karaoke machine which all proved to be a lot of fun and entertainment for all! It was so nice to see our OHSC community grow and welcome new friends to join in on the School Holiday fun as well as welcoming back our friends from other schools. We can’t wait to see what October Vacation Care will bring! The OSHC Team Fullarton Park Community Centre Parenting Sessions Fullarton Park Community Centre is presenting two parenting sessions with well-known teacher, counsellor and author Mark Le Messurier in August. I have been very fortunate during this time to witness living examples of how our College community has responded to this extraordinary time in our history. It was so lovely to see the calm and deeply pastoral manner in which the staff and students came together in Home Classes before the final bell to touch base, gather belongings and say farewells as we all prepared for the lockdown. For me this spoke of the strength of the relationships which are at the core of our community. College staff have also done extraordinary work as they planned for and led online learning while also caring for students via video conferencing, phone calls and email messages. The passage above from Matthew’s Gospel is a favourite of mine, as it talks specifically about living our faith. It talks about our actions speaking louder than our words. The way that our College staff have responded to this pandemic is such a great example of how we live out our faith. In fact, it demonstrates so well the Lutheran Church of Australia’s mission statement: “Where Love Comes to Life”. I am so thankful for the amazing work that our College staff have done and continue to do to
be ‘extraordinary’ as they support and care for our students. Paul Weinert Principal - Concordia Campus University of Newcastle Science and Engineering Challenge Day On the Friday of Week 7 in Term 2, 18 students from the Year 10 STEM class participated in a day of science and engineering challenges, competing against seven other Adelaide schools. Students were challenged to think critically, problem solve and create innovative solutions to real-world problems. These tasks ranged from cost-effective energy production and supply, logistical pathway design, applying basic robotic principles to maneuver objects, designing and creating a hovercraft to be controlled over an obstacle course and designing a high-performance hydrogen generator turbine, amongst others. All of our students were extremely engaged in the challenges, applying themselves to each task and developing outstanding solutions. So great were their achievements that collectively, their results placed them second overall for the day, only missing out on first place by half a point! I was very proud of the way that the STEM students conducted themselves, displaying good sportsmanship while competing and representing the College at a high level. Rhys Dezsery Design, Technology & Engineering and STEM Teacher Year 7/8 and Year 9 Choir Performances After singing beautifully as part of the St John’s Lutheran Church service on Sunday, 20 June, the Year 7/8 Choir combined with the Year 9 Choir to further serve our community by presenting a delightful program at the Metropolitan Women’s Fellowship Day held in the St John’s Lutheran Church on Wednesday 23 June. Led by the highly talented Lee Pfitzner as their conductor, both choirs performed wonderful programs and are to be congratulated for their professionalism at both events. Mat Noble Director of Music Year 11s Learning Skills to Save Lives Following their mid-year exams, a record 72 Year 11 students took part in a full-day St John Ambulance first aid course. The students enjoyed the opportunity to engage in hands-on learning and gain valuable life skills. The Year 11s focused on workplace safety during Pastoral Care in Semester 1, and the first aid course provided a timely extension of this knowledge
in preparation for their work experience in Week 9. Judy Harris Year 11 Pastoral Leader Australian National Titration Competition In the last week of Term 2, two teams of three Year 12 Chemistry students took part in the Australian National Titration Competition. They spent about 2 ½ hours after school individually carrying out experimental procedures but working in a team setting. The challenge for these six students was to find the mass of samples of crystalline oxalic acid to 1000th of a gram. This task was done using the technique of chemical titration, a procedure frequently used in Chemical laboratories to find the concentration of a various solutions. To progress to the state finals, each team of three students had to achieve less than a 2% combined team error. Both teams were successful in this endeavor and will move to the next round. The star performer was Jasmine (12LMAC) who achieved an unbelievable accuracy with a 0.01% error. The State Final will be held on Saturday morning 7 August at the laboratories of the University of South Australia at the city campus, given that COVID-19 restrictions do not prevent this. The two teams will compete against around 20 other teams from South Australia carrying out similar chemical procedures with additional complications. We wish them all the best. James Gerhardy Chemistry Teacher Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra Visit In Week 9 of Term 2, the outstanding ensemble Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra (ECWO) visited Concordia to perform to our Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and selected classes. The excellent standard of this university ensemble provided inspiration to our own young musicians who were clearly engaged in the brilliant music being played for them. After the performance, ECWO’s sensational conductor (Luke Dolman) was kind enough to lead a combined Concert Band and Wind Ensemble rehearsal. This was a privilege for our students to be part of as Luke is one of Australia’s leading directors. Our gratitude is extended to Luke and ECWO for both entertaining us as well as providing a wonderful educational opportunity. Mat Noble Director of Music Year 11 Design, Technology and Engineering
During Semester 1, our Year 11 Design, Technology and Engineering students were given the challenge to design and manufacture a piece of ‘framed furniture’. They quickly engaged with the task and learnt the necessary skills to make this possible. A standout feature of this year’s projects was the diversity of designs and the finished products were arguably the some of the most challenging and highest quality ever produced. All students can be extremely pleased of their outstanding achievements and will be able to proudly admire their work for many years to come. If you have a concern or would like to contact someone in the Department, please contact Stacey Grieve who will ensure your communication is followed up by the relevant person. Stacey, like the rest of the team, is often in classes supporting students, so she may not be able to immediately respond or forward your enquiry to the relevant person. Stacey’s contact address is: sgrieve@concordia.sa.edu.au Vera White Director of Staff Rostrum Voice of Youth State Final Lily (Year 9) competed in the SA / NT Rostrum Voice of Youth Zone Final in the House of Assembly, Parliament House on Saturday 26 June. She competed against a collection of magnificent Junior speakers from Saint Ignatius College, Pultney Grammar School and Wilderness School. Lily delivered a prepared speech on the topic ‘The Human Spirit’ as well as a short notice speech. We congratulate Lily on being awarded first place in the state. Rachel Sanderson, Member for Adelaide, presented Lily with a trophy. In light of recent restrictions, the National Final which was due to be held in July will take a different form. Recordings of Lily’s speeches, along with the other students who reached the National Final, will be reviewed by a selection of adjudicators from a range of states. The outcome of this process will be communicated at the end of this month. We thank the wonderful members of the Rostrum for this amazing and truly memorable learning opportunity. Lily, we are proud of your hard work. Emma Rieger Enrichment and Extended Learning Instrumental Tuition via Teams We again thank all those involved in continuing to provide more than 250 Concordia Campus students with quality online instrumental lessons during lockdown. Whilst we understand that learning an instrument via Teams comes with challenges, we are also very much aware of the benefits that extend from continuity of lessons. Naturally, we hope to have our instrumental tutors back on campus ASAP, but in the meantime I want to acknowledge their efforts during this time, as well as the engagement displayed by our students as they embrace this mode of lesson delivery. Mat Noble Director of Music Student Achievements Congratulations to Raghav (Year 9) who was awarded an A+ for his Grade 3 AMEB Trumpet exam, and to Ethan (Year 7) who was awarded an A+ for his Grade 4 AMEB Trumpet exam. Congratulations to Fletcher (7LTHO) who recently took part in the Surf Life Saving Pool Rescue State Championships and
won six medals - an amazing effort! Back to top

In this Section Pedal Prix Adelaide Race Old Concordians' Association Soccer Club Update St John's Campus Sports Results Concordia Campus Sports Results Pedal Prix Adelaide Race The Concordia Pedal Prix team recently competed in the six-hour Adelaide race on 20 June at Victoria Park. This was the third day of racing at the track which included 100 school teams from around South Australia from both Middle and Senior School. The shortened 1.17km criterium loop track resulted in a very exciting day of racing with quick lap times being recorded in under two minutes and our teams reaching speeds in excess of 40km/h. The tight circuit made for some competitive racing with students using their race craft skills to overtake and find the fastest line around the track without any significant damage. On the sidelines, teams showed great spirit, teamwork and enthusiasm, resulting in faster changeovers assisting with their great on-track results, which included three top 10 finishes. Team Shockwave, made up of younger Year 7 and 8 riders, showed significant improvement, with some standout individual results, finishing just out of the top 20. Team Matrix moved into the top 10 early in the race, holding their position by a couple of laps. A rear puncture late in the race threatened to lose their position, but the team powered on to finish 8th. Team Concorde has been competitive all season, continuing their impressive lap times and contention for a top three position, finishing 4th. Team Veloci, our senior team, moved from 11th position to an impressive 6th with some impressive riding times. Thank you to all parents who assisted with several roles to make the day such a success. Old Concordians' Association Soccer Club Update The Old Concordians' Soccer Club has reached the halfway point of its third season in the Collegiate Soccer League. The season thus far has been successful both on and off the pitch. With all three teams sitting in the top three of their respective divisions in addition to the involvement of over 50 Old Concordians, it has been a great year so far for the Club. We have recently celebrated our second ever player to play 50 games for the Club, Josh Mcloughney (Class of 2015), who has joined Jaco Jordaan (Class of 2017) who achieved the milestone last year. With all three teams fighting for a title, it looks to be an exciting second half of the season. While we are not able to take new players at this time, we encourage those interested in joining the Club to come out to a game and express their interest in joining for the 2022 season. If you would like to get in contact with the Club, you can find us at our Facebook page or by contacting Club President, Cameron Basnec, at concordiaocfootball@gmail.com.
