BOULEVARD CENTRAL ISSUE 2 2021 COMMUNITY NEWS Trash the attitude, not the neighbourhood With so many easy and responsible waste disposal avenues within your home and in your community, why chuck it from the balcony? Littering from balconies can have numerous damaging effects: • Trash falling on an unassuming passerby could cause injuries and even death. • Falling cigarette butts are a serious fire hazard. They are also non-biodegradable and take years to decompose while emanating toxic chemicals. • Young children and pets could accidentally swallow or handle dangerous waste. • It could increase the maintenance cost resulting from frequent cleaning. • It ruins the aesthetics of the community. The Dubai Municipality takes a dim view of this practice and violators could be fined up to AED 50,000.

BOULEVARD CENTRAL ISSUE 2 2021 COMMUNITY NEWS Feeding stray cats - a moral dilemma Feeding hungry and homeless cats is a wonderfully humane thing to do. However, in the long run, it can cause more harm than good. • The stray you feed may be infested with fleas or worse, has rabies. Fleas in cats may lead to tapeworm infestation which can be transferable to humans in rare cases. • When you feed them regularly, they not only expect it, but they bring their friends too. More strays mean more chance for disease spreading. • Regularly fed cats multiply at a fast rate, increasing the stray population. • Feral cats may scratch or bite people. • They get dependent on humans for food and don’t forage for themselves. If their regular feeding stops, they will be helpless, not able to fend for themselves.

We had a tête-à-tête with Veeramani, from India, who’s been your community’s AC technician for four years. What’s his typical day like? I usually spend more time at work and on weekends I go out with friends. I get to enjoy myself with them and show them around Dubai. On his family back home? My family’s life is very lively back home. I grew up with my father’s mother and two sisters. My father was a farmer. Any memorable moments on the job? I was on duty one day when I received a call about a customer who was stuck outside in the balcony because the door was stuck. The customer was dehydrated, and the key was broken inside. It took me around 20 minutes to rescue the resident and the appreciation I received after that was unforgettable. In my four years here, I have never missed home because the residents here treat us like their family members. What is your ambition or dream? I work hard and try to be a good man. I have helped my father in arranging my sister's marriage and now I want to help my father settle his business back in India, so he can peacefully retire. How has the year been so far? After experiencing 2020, trying to get back to normal is challenging. But it taught us many lessons in safety.
