Senior Times People need people. There is a substantial amount of evidence that describes the relationship between health and social isolation. A senior’s social network can positively influence good health behaviours. (www.canada.ca) It is equally important to stay physically and mentally engaged. The Following are some tips for keeping yourself active and engaged this Fall/Winter. 1. Join a club or group, whether in person or online The Airdrie Public Library (APL) has a great variety of social, recreational and educational programs for seniors. Check out these virtual programming choices for adults offered at APL. Adult Writers Club; Book Club; Genealogy Group; Zoom Crew - Tales for the Tall. The APL website (www.airdriepubliclibrary.ca) has several excellent adult crafting videos. Interested in learning more about the library and their programs, sign up for their newsletter. Reading is an excellent way to keep your mind exercised. North Rocky View Community Links offers many programs and supports for seniors. If you are a caregiver, you can meet and speak with other caregivers at the Caregiver Support Group. This group provides social support for individuals caring for a senior. Educational resources and presentations are offered as well as opportunities to network and share challenges and successes with other group participants. Please join us October 20th at 1:30 pm. Lonely? Consider having a Friendly Visitor from Community Links. The Friendly Visiting Program offers isolated seniors in need of companionship, social, recreational and supportive visits at the senior’s home or in the community. Volunteers are matched with the senior based on similar interests and assist the senior in connecting with their community. There is a great variety of cultural, social and educational programs in Airdrie. **During Covid-19 be sure to check in with each organization to confirm their availability, hours, special conditions and health policies.
2. Play your favorite games or activities online It’s easy to play cards or board games online. Websites like Arkadium.com offer a variety of card and board games that you can play with others or on your own. You can also download apps on your phone to play games with others, such as “Words with Friends”, Ultimate Cribbage” or “Cribbage Pro”. (www.eraliving.com) Do you like word search puzzles? Stimulate your brain with the free online puzzles available at http://www.thepotters.com. For years, the Airdrie Senior’s Outreach Program (ASOP) received permission from John Potter to publish his word search puzzles in the ASOP newsletter. John welcomes visitors to his site and reminds them that “these puzzles are NOT interactive...you cannot solve them over the 'net”. To work the puzzles, print them off and use a pencil. There are two types of puzzles on this website; kid's and adult's, the only difference being the size of the puzzle and the number of words. 3. Communicate the old-fashioned way If you don’t have access to smart phones or computers, consider sending a hand-written letter or card to friends and loved ones instead. If you like to volunteer, letter-writing can also be used to spread messages of hope. The non-profit www.lettersagainst.org gives people an opportunity to write hand- written letters of support to people suffering from depression. This is a simple way to do and feel good, and to connect with others. (www.eraliving.com) 4. Write a Journal Document and preserve your memories. A journal can serve to preserve your memories, wisdom and personality. You can share these with your family, providing them with meaningful insights or interesting facts related to your life. Journaling can also be used for creative expression, whether it is writing poetry, tracking the daily weather, birds you have spotted in your yard or writing down recipes you love or want to try. You can be disciplined and take a few moments every day to journal, or simply do it when the mood strikes. Finding ways to stay connected with others can be challenging for seniors during the winter months. However, it is important to stay connected with loved ones and others and to engage both your mental and physical selves . If you need help accessing programs or services or are lonely please reach out to Community Links at 403-945-3900 or 1-866–945-3905.
