The Beauty of DIVERSITY in My Community Hemlock Semiconductor Operations is proud to sponsor the 11th Annual Community Calendar Art Contest. To honor diversity and display its many facets, we invited high school students in the Saginaw, Bay City, Midland and Gratiot school districts to submit creative artwork that supports the 2021 calendar theme: The Beauty of Diversity in My Community. Students were asked to feature any element of diversity they wished, from ethnicity and race to gender, religion or job occupations. The contest generated many powerful and meaningful entries. Judges looked for the right balance of quality, color, creativity, subject matter and alignment to the theme. The result is fourteen winning works of art featured throughout the calendar, along with the artists’ interpretation on why diversity is important and how it makes communities stronger. Not only can we learn from these students’ words of wisdom, but we can also discover more about diversity by reading the factoids on every calendar month about the proven value of diversity in society. Plus, when you flip to the back of the calendar, you will find important Community Safety Information and Quick Safety Tips that can help you and your family stay safe in a potential emergency. Please hang this calendar on your wall so that every day, we are reminded to respect and support the beauty of diversity in our community. Many thanks to all of the students who submitted entries, and to the schools, teachers and parents who helped the students in this endeavor – which was especially challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic. Special congratulations go to the winners for their wonderful portrayals of diversity, and to Hemlock High School for earning the “Best of the Best Award.” Artist: Rowan Meddaugh Interpretation: My artwork focuses on the diversity of identity, which includes religion, gender and sexuality. Quite often, we group people by skin color and do not look beyond that to see that within the black community, for example, there are many different types of people and cultures. This is important because we cannot categorize people based on skin color. Diversity in all forms builds a strong community because being able to recognize our differences can bring people together through greater understanding.
