Day 3 - Saturday Santa Marta The carnival has been held every year for over a century and is considered to be one of the most colourful in the world. It was declared a Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Ship docked, no water sports. Day 4 - Sunday This pearl of the colonial era is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous for its 11-km long wall built by the Spaniards. Cartagena is also Carthagena a bustling town with lively streets and festivals, and colourful conlonial architecture. Founded in 1566 by Spanish colonists and the main port in the time of the conquistadors, its colonial centre with balconies hung with Day 5 - Monday Cartagena bougainvillea flowers, the squares, the cobbled streets and historic buildings make it the most beautiful in the country. Just a short distance from "civilisation" lies the Embera community, who still live entirely by tradition, building with natural fiber and palm Day 7 - Wednesday leaves, wearing multicolored loinclothes and painting their bodies. You will travel by bus to Lake Alajuela, then take a 45-minute ride in a Colon / The Embera Indians (1/2 day, morning) * pirogue up a river that leads to their village. As you sit on the ground, you will observe their daily routiens and learn about their way of life and culture, which mesh perfectly and sustainably with their environment. After an hour's drive, you'll arrive at the Miraflores Locks, where a visitor centre helps you to understand the impressive 20th century Day 7 - Wednesday engineering. Then you'll explore Panama's colonial quarter, Casco Antiguo, and have lunch there. This lovely area was awarded Unesco Colon / Panama, Bridge over America (1 day) * World Heritage status in 1997. In the afternoon, wander the side streets of this stunning district, and discover the various colonial era churches, the Plaza de Francia and Plaza Bolivar. Take a look at the shops and craft stalls. Day 7 - Wednesday Come and see the Agua Clara locks. The watchtower, which stands 60 m above sea level, offers an unbeatable view over Lake Gatún and Colon / New locks and San Lorenzo (1/2 day - the new Panama Canal locks. Next, you will visit the ruins of San Lorenzo fort, full of history from the days of the pirates. Explore one of the top tourist destinations in Panama: BOCAS DEL TORO! Its wildlife aboard a lancha remote location makes it the ideal refuge for endangered species. Day 8 - Thursday Set out with your guide to discover the archipelago, in particular its cocoa production. Travel in a lancha boat to the plantation and wander Boca Del Toro / Cacao and through the paths to find out where fermentation, drying and roasting take place. You will also learn about the history of cocoa and of lanchas (1/2 day) * course taste some of Bocas' black gold! The Tortuguero canals were dug during the heyday of wood exports to enable boats to navigate between the ocean and the tropical forest Day 9 - Friday that made the country rich. Now a designated national park, the canals are a haven for birds, monkeys, caimans and manatees. This trip to the Sloth Sanctuary is an entertaining and informative insight into the world of sloths: how they live, what makes them unique Day 9 - Friday Limon / Sloths ( 1/2 day) * and the effects of humans encroaching on their habitat. You can see them in the Rehabilitation Centre, and even spot wild sloths on your 45 minute boat trip through the heart of the rainforest. Day 9 - Friday Cahuita National Park is known for its wonderful coral reefs and luxurious tropical vegetation. It is also home to many species of animals.
