Welcome Welcome to Auckland Dragon Boat Association (ADBA) and thank you for taking on the role as Team Manager or Teacher in charge. This pack outlines dragon boating in Auckland for the 2020 season. For any questions please contact Amie Heywood @ ADBAschools@gmail.com Purpose This guide is for new and existing Team Managers and Teacher’s in Charge. The information provided should help you manage your secondary school team and make your job easier About ADBA Auckland Dragon Boat Association (ADBA) is a Regional Sports Organization (RSO) affiliated to the New Zealand Dragon Boat Association (NZDBA) and the International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF). Our goal is to promote, facilitate and develop dragon boating within the Auckland region. Our vision is to facilitate a regionally based safe, supportive, fun and well-structured sports programme that is easy to join, is accessible to all youth, adults and community groups. The ADBA caters for all levels from social to competitive/elite sports persons and teams. ADBA is run by the paddlers for the paddlers. ADBA is an incorporated society and registered charity. ADBA is solely run by volunteers. ADBA 2018-2032 GROWTH & DEVELOPMENT Strategy To grow and develop our sport. Increase membership to be a one of the most successful RSO to belong to in New Zealand by 2026. INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS To annually host NZ’s largest international “festival” in Auckland by 2021. To support our teams travelling to rank in the top 3 internationally by 2021. FACILITIES To have our own club facilities, a place for our clubs, teams & committee to use for training and meetings. This will provide a storage space for our equipment and have a built-in race control by 2032. The Season ON-SEASON Secondary schools are currently training and competing in Term 1. Core Team 1. Enjoy and take pictures Book training SECONDARY SCHOOLS Click here NOTE the page can take up to 20 seconds to appear. This is a reoccurring appointment, if you only book single sessions you will cause issues. Accept the reoccurring and notify by email which ones you can’t make. It will also send you a calendar reminder. Page |3
Cancellation of If your team will not be attending training, you must notify ADBA training 90mins prior to training training. Post on ADBA Leaders Facebook page and/or cancel calendar booking. ADBA will only cancel training if there are white peaks, waterspouts, lightning strikes, water contaminants or hazards we cannot mitigate. This allows coaches to modify training slots to land base without interference or confusion from the association. If ADBA needs to cancel training, notices will be posted on the ADBA Training Facebook group by midday and emailed out to TIC, team managers, sweeps and coaches as listed in the registration form. Register your team Secondary schools must complete the registration form on College Sport EnterNOW system. New Schools For schools in their first season of dragon boating, ADBA will provide as much support as we can to make the process easy for the teacher in charge and the team. We will provide paddles, find and help train new sweeps, and assist with coaching. Sweeps There is a NZDBA Sweep Accreditation Programme that has been run throughout NZ since 2015.This is designed to teach the “rules of the road” at sea. This has been paramount in recording zero incidents during training since it was rolled out. New sweeps not certified, must register for the novice sweep program which is managed under the NZDBA sweep guidelines. All teams training must have a NZDBA L2+ certified sweep. The sweep oversees and is responsible for your boat at all times. His/her commands must be obeyed to insure everyone’s safety. Schools new to dragon boating can approach the ADBA for help with acquiring a sweep or with the training of a school sweep. Reporting Near If you notice a near miss or have an incident, please log it online. This will automatically Misses and notify training and safety. Training Locations WESTHAVEN MARINA Public Boat Ramp Pier Z Westhaven Marina Auckland Harbour Keep the boat ramp area free when warming up to allow boats to reverse in and out without hindrance from paddlers. Keep to the yellow no parking areas by the public toilets. Free Parking in white sections Mondays thru till Thursdays 4pm and 5pm KILLARNEY PARK Takapuna Page |5
Parking $ WESTHAVEN MARINA Pier Z is $2 per hour and they will ticket if you are one minute late. If you are going to pay and display, please ensure you pay for 20mins more than you are due out to save being towed. We strongly recommend participants park at Pier X and walk. It’s a 5-minute warm up. Use of Westhaven • The ramp and car access areas are legal roads - keep them clear at all times. Marina • When warming up keep to the yellow no parking areas by the public toilets. • When loading your boats into the water, there are only 2 ramps - please keep all dragon boats on one ramp, pushing the first boat to the front. At high tide 4 dragon boats can be loaded on one side. This minimizes our spread and allows other marine uses access. • 4pm and 5pm crews handing over their boat to 5pm and 6pm crews should dock on the promenade pontoon (accessed from the toilet down the ramp) unless it is very low tide. • 7pm crews should make themselves visible on the promenade 5mins before 7pm, if crews are not visible the 6pm crews should take their boat in. • Ensure you put your rubbish, drink bottles, coffee cups etc into the bins at Westhaven. • Showers available for use, $2 for the longest hottest 5 mins, same combination as the Lock up (don’t give this out to the freedom campers – you can let them in just don’t give them our code). Use of Killarney • When loading your boats into the water, 1 boat at a time, follow the instructions Park of the sports coordinator and sweep. • Ensure you put your rubbish, drink bottles, coffee cups etc into the bins at Killarney Park • Free parking is available at The Pumphouse Basic Rules of • TIC or supervising adult MUST BE AT EVERY TRAINING. Training • All students in attendance must provide you with NOK details in the case of an emergency. ADBA and their coaches/sweeps cannot accept responsibility on their behalf. • All teams must have a Level 2 certified sweep (refer to sweep section). • All teams training 2x per week or have completed a minimum of 10 training sessions before the Secondary school regional championships • Lifejackets are to be kept in bundles of 11 • No gear is to be left on the ground • Walkways to be kept clear of gear Team Divisions • Must be made up of enrolled students of a school. • Girls, Boys and Mixed. Note there must be a minimum of three teams in each division to have a grand final at any race. Page |6
Crew FULL BOAT RACES (20 man) Compositions at Minimum of 16 paddlers, 1x sweep and 1x drummer. Events Maximum 20 paddlers, A mixed crew must have a minimum of 8 female paddlers. Maximum squad 26 including manager, captain, sweep, drummer. Crew lists and photo ID’s must be provided before teams enter the boats for regionals. Paddles Teams are to provide their own paddles. However, for first year teams they can borrow the ADBA club paddles for training and racing. Once teams are in their second year, they will need to buy their own IDBF spec 202A or similar. T-Bar (wood or fiber-glass) paddles may be used but are not mandatory. Teams can purchase paddles from: NZDBA Contact NZDBA for paddle purchases in NZ. NZ.dragonboat.association@gmail.com We ask our paddlers to take care for the boats. Below is listed how we expect you to use Boats the boats: • The correct way to pick up the new boats is via the hand holds inside the boat - not by the seats as they come off. • Team must pick the entire boat up and not just one end as this will cause fracture / stress cracks over the season. • Load the boat into the boat ramp closest to the toilet block. Do not take up all pontoons. • Maximum time on the pontoon is 5mins. • Load the boat facing out so you do not reverse out of the dock. • Do not stand on the seats. • Do not bang your paddles on the side of the boat. • Do not rub wax on any part of the boat. • Break well before the wharf, and approach slowly to minimize damage. • Make sure your boat is bailed and clear of drink bottles/property. • Last teams to leave training are to ensure the trolley is chained up and the padlock is secure. • All bailers, sweep oars are placed back in the lock up and all rubbish is picked up from the boats, round the boats and the boat ramp. Safety Operating ADBA has Safety Operating Procedures (SOP). Please see contact list for the Safety Procedures Officer and these procedures can be found our website www.aucklanddragonboats.co.nz and click on documents. Please familiarize yourself with the SOP. Swimming Non-swimmers are not permitted in the dragon boats. All members must be able to swim at least 50 metres. It is the team manager’s responsibility to facilitate a swim test before the first training event in February to ensure you are comfortable in the water. Please refer to the SOP for full details. All registered paddlers of the Auckland Dragon Boat Assn have already electronically Safety waivers signed online. Only non-registered paddlers need to sign a safety waiver. Secondary schools must have their principles permission on EnterNow. Next of Kin Details It is the team managers/TIC/supervising adult responsibility to ensure the NOK details are always readily available at every training and event. Please ensure you give accurate details. First Aid There is a fully stocked first aid kit in the lockup. If you or a team member need to consume items, please complete the line in the booklet provided so we know what to replace. Team managers need to be aware of any medication or medical condition of any team member I.e. Inhaler, insulin, heart sprays etc. Behind the door in the lock up is the first aid contact details if an emergency arises. We strongly recommend you identify all first aid certificate holders in your team. Use of the lock up No gear is to be stored in the lockup during training. This includes team paddle bags. This area includes safety equipment and must always be freely accessible. The ADBA will take no responsibility for any loss incurred of personal gear. Only team managers, captains, sweeps and coaches are allowed in the lockup. Lifejackets • ADBA supplies lifejackets. • All persons on board must wear a lifejacket. • Lifejackets are to be kept in bundles of 11. • Each team is always to take 2 bundles and keep all extras on the dragon boat. • Lifejackets are never to be left outside lockup. • Lifejackets should be tied up in bunches of 11 and are to be returned to the lock up. • Hang them high. • Any intentional inflation of a lifejacket will incur a $25 charge to replace the canister. Security Every paddler is a member of the paddling fraternity; therefore, we are all to watch out for each other and you’re neighboring teams. Do not leave your bags, shoes, paddles on the dock unattended. Lock your cars, keep your valuables out of sight and report any issues to the Rescue Operator. Sunscreen You and your teams will be exposed to the sun when training and racing. Please ensure you are wearing hats/caps, sunglasses for eye protection, reapply sunscreen during the day and stay under shade as much as possible. If you see someone going pink, offer them sunblock – they’ll thank you for it. Hydration Please stay hydrated, please make sure you have at least 2L of water per person. Clothing WINTER: Thermal long sleeve top under your T-shirt or singlet, bike shorts or thermal shorts under your shorts, dive boats or boats shoes. Page |8
SUMMER: Board shorts, singlet and jandals. You don't want to be wearing baggie tops with long sleeves as it will get wet and get in Clothing the way of your paddling. We don’t’ recommend cotton has it also gets too heavy when wet. You can wear cheap sunglasses that don't fall off easy as you'll get splashed in the face a lot and a short peaked cap...longer the peak the more likely you'll hit it off. No long pants allowed. Bring a towel and change of clothes or warm tracksuit for the journey home or to keep warm for after training drinks / dinner with the team. Handy tip: if training late into the evening, fill a 2L bottle with hot water and wrap in a towel before coming to training. Use it to rinse after training, it will warm you up. Sponsorship ADBA is open to sponsorship. Please pass on our details to any businesses interested in supporting and developing our sport. All operating funds are raised from membership and event entry fees. Fundraising If your team has a fundraising event you would like us to support, send the details to us and we’ll circulate your invite, tickets, etc. If your team would like to sell raffles at events or do a BBQ, please email the association first to ensure we don’t double up at events. Pack Down Event Pack Down for 2020 Auckland Regional Dragon Boat Championships The seniors and volunteers will pack in and setup the event, the secondary school students get an opportunity to help with the pack down. Please ensure your students and parents are geared up to give back a little time to the sport at the end of the day. SUNDAY 15 MARCH 2020 3pm – 3.30pm ~ all boats loaded on to trailers ~ event gear packed away 3.30pm – 4.30pm ~ 15x lane packers Incorporated Auckland Dragon Boat Association is an incorporated society (registration number Society 2166967) and run by a committee of paddlers, coaches, sweeps, callers and school teachers from a variety of Auckland teams. All are volunteers, so all the administration costs are setup to be as minimal as possible to keep fees down. See the last page for the committee contact details. ADBA is an affiliated member of the NZDBA www.nzdba.co.nz who is affiliated to the International Dragon Boat Federation and the NZ Canoe Federation. If your club/crew is also an incorporated society, you can use your ADBA affiliation letter to gain charity funding. The committee meets the third Thursday of the month in the off-season, and every second Friday on-season (TBC). Meetings are held at the Ponsonby Cruising Club. If your team would like to address the committee on any issue, please email aucklanddragonboats@gmail.com by the 1st of the month with the subject you would like discussed, you will be added to the agenda and required to attend the next meeting. Charity Auckland Dragon Boat Association is a not for profit registered charity (registration number CC44176) and we log over 11,700 hours to run the sport. Alcohol and Drugs Auckland Dragon Boat Association has zero tolerance policy when it comes to alcohol and drugs. World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules apply, please see IDBF website. No alcohol is to be consumed within the 12 hours before entering a dragon boat. If any individual is caught breaking this rule during training or at an event the ENTIRE team will be either suspended from training or disqualified from the competition and will need to appear in front of the committee for disciplinary action. Auckland Dragon Boat Association has a Make It Greener policy. We ask all participants Make It Greener to not only take out what rubbish they bring to training and races but pick up any extras Policy left in the areas we use. Let make our universe a cleaner place every day.
