Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Household�Hazardous�Waste�Collection�Day�will�be�held on�Saturday,�September�26th�from�8:00�am�to�noon at Smithfield�Park,�119�Military�Road,�Lancaster. Please�note�that�electronic�waste�will NOT be�collected�on this�date.�E-waste�can�be�recycled�year�round�in�the�e-waste recycling�containers�at�our�landfill�sites. Trim Your Wasteline Canadian�households�generate over�25 million�tonnes of�waste�each�year.�That's�in�excess�of 2�kilogram�per person�per�day�-�more�than�almost�any�other�country.* Conduct�a�household�waste�audit�to�find�out�if�some�of�the�material you’re�sending�to�landfills�can�be�redirected. Here’s�how: • With�your�family�members,�empty�your�bag�of�garbage�onto sheets�of�newspaper. • Item�by�item,�determine�which�materials�could�have�been recycled,�composted�or�donated�for�re-use. • Consult�frequently�with�your�recycling�guidelines. • List�the�changes�your�family�could�make�to�get�to�zero�waste. Make�a�pledge�now�to�reduce�the�amount�of�waste�your household�generates. Waste-Free Ontario Act Waste-Free�Ontario�Act�Timeline In�November�of�2016,�the�Waste�Diversion�Act�was�repealed�and replaced�by�the�Waste-Free�Ontario�Act,�which�includes�both the�Waste�Diversion�Transition�Act�and�the�Resource�Recovery�and Circular�Economy�Act. This�new�legislation�will�have�a�major�impact�on�municipal�waste management�and,�most�importantly,�on�waste�diversion�programs you�may�operate�now�or�have�planned�for�the�future. Municipal�blue�box�recycling�programs�will�undergo�some�of�the biggest�changes,�as�municipalities�will�have�new�options�-�to�act as�service�providers�to�producers�who�are�required�to�pay�for�these programs,�to�work�with�private�service�providers,�or�opt�out�from providing�service�altogether. It�is�in�the�best�interest�of�municipal�governments�that�this�work gets�done�as�quickly�as�possible,�as�the�current�proposal�to transition�the�Blue�Box�is�expected�to�take�at�least�another�six�years and�will�cost�municipalities�an�estimated�$780�million.�Municipalities can�save�$130�million�per�year�by�accelerating�this�transition. Are You Prepared? Emergencies�can�happen�anytime. Is�your�family�ready? The�Township�of�South�Glengarry�has�a�Municipal�Emergency�Plan,�and residents�are�encouraged�to�use�it�to�prepare�for�natural�disasters�that could�leave�us�without�essential�services.�If�a�disaster�happens�in�your community,�it�may�take�emergency�workers�some�time�to�get�to�you�as they�help�those�in�desperate�need.�You�should�be�prepared�to�take�care of�yourself�and�your�family�for�a�minimum�of�72�hours. Construction & Demolition Waste Construction�and�demolition�waste�is�NOT�collected at�the�curbside. Construction�and�demolition�waste consists�mainly�of: • Concrete • Brick • Asphalt • Metals • Wood • Gypsum�(drywall) • Shingles Using�the�3R's�(Reduce,�Reuse�and�Recycle)�we�are�trying�to�reduce�the�impact on�the�environment�by�diverting�some�of�this�waste�through�our�various�programs. What�you�can�do�to�help�our�environment. • Donate�construction�and�demolition�materials�that�you�don't�need�to�a local�affiliate�of�Habitat�for�Humanity�or�other�similar�organization. • Consider�renovating your�space�instead�of�completely�gutting�and�rebuilding it. • Sort�waste�as�it�is�created�into�things�that�can�be�recycled,�things�to�be�reused, and�things�to�be�thrown�away. • Excess�insulation�can�be�used�within�interior�wall�cavities�as�above�attics, if�not�used�on�another�job,�rather�than�being�discarded.

Leaf and Yard Waste A�special�collection�of�leaf�and�yard�waste�will take�place�on�regular�collection�days�the�week of�May�10th,�2021. South�Glengarry�Residents�are�asked�to�place�leaf and�yard�waste�at�the�curb�along�with�regular waste�at�6�am. • Leaf�and�yard�waste must�be contained�in paper�bags�or�reusable�containers�such�as garbage�cans�or�recycling�bins. • There�is no bag�limit. • Leaf�and�yard�waste�will�be�collected�by�a separate�designated�truck. • Sticks�and�branches�up�to�4ft�are�accepted,�as long�as�they�are�bundled. Outside�of�this�special�collection�week,�residents�are encouraged�to�consider�mulching�techniques�to�reduce the�volume�of�leaves�or�try�backyard�composters.

The Dirt on Composting Composting�is�a�natural�process�in�which�organic materials�decompose,�and�become�a�nutrient-rich�soil amendment.�Your�lawn�and�garden�will�love�it! Why�Compost: • Reduce�Greenhouse�Gases.�Diverting�Organics�from�the landfill�reduces�methane�emissions. • Stop�Soil�Loss.�The�Earth�annually�loses�75-100�GigaTonnes�of arable�topsoil.�Composting�returns�nutrients�back�into�soils. • Save�Water.�Organic�matter�retains�18-20�times�its�weight�in water.�1%�organic�matter�in�the�top�6''�of�soil�can�hold�27,000 gallons�of�water�per�acre. Recycling Matters For�decades,�Canada�and�other�developed�countries�had�been selling�their�waste�plastic�to�China,�where�it�was�sorted,�cleaned, processed�and�re-used�in�the�country's�massive�manufacturing industry.�That�all�changed�on�Jan.�1,�2018,�when�China�began refusing�shipments�of�a�wide�variety�of�plastic�waste�products, including�plastic�contaminated�by�foreign�materials�such�as�food�or fabric.�This�left�many�countries�in�a�bind,�including�Canada,�where waste�disposal�is�handled�on�a�municipal�and�regional�level.�The Canadian�Plastics�Industry�Association�says�it�has�most�of�the�means required�to�handle�Canada's�plastic�waste�within�the�country,�but�it will�take�years�to�build�up�the�scale�to�handle�all�of�it. In�the�end,�the�goal�is�to�reach�a�zero�waste�plastic�economy.�The problem�with�achieving�a�zero-waste�economy,�in�a�nutshell,�is peanut�butter.�Plastic�containers�that�are�collected�with�food�still inside�-�peanut�butter�being�the�most�common�example�-�more work�to�clean�than�they're�worth.1 What�is�in�all�that�trash?�Plastics�take�up�7%�of�the�volume�and 30%�of�the�weight�of�the�total�garbage�flow.�Right�now�around 80%�of�municipal�waste�in�Canada�ends�up�being�dumped�in�a landfill.2 Here’s�why�recycling�remains�important: • Eight�million�tonnes�of�plastic�waste�are�being�dumped�into�the world's�oceans�each�year,�or�one�dump-truck�load�of�stuff�every minute.�At�this�rate,�it's�expected�that�plastic�will�outweigh�fish in�the�world's�oceans�by�2050.1 1:�Globalnews.ca/china-plastic-waste-ban-canada 2:�junk-works.ca/important-facts-about-canadian-recycling
