The Baycrest Speech-Language Pathologists Present: Cognitive-Communication Abilities in Typical and Disordered Aging: An Evidence-Based Update on Assessment and Intervention Approaches Kelly Murphy, PhD, CPsych Sylvia Davidson BSc; MSc; OT Reg.(Ont.) Laura Murray, PhD, SLP(C) Thursday, May 2 & Friday, May 3, 2019 Baycrest The Jacob Family Theatre at the Posluns Auditorium 3560 Bathurst Street, Toronto, ON, M6A 2E1 This conference will address cognitive-communication abilities in typical and disordered aging. Ms. Davidson will discuss the Occupational Therapy approach to cognitive assessment and its functional implications. Dr. Murphy will discuss neuropsychological evaluation and the influence of memory change on communication. Dr. Murray will review cognitive-communication changes associated with typical and disordered aging. With an emphasis on newly developed and evidence-based approaches, Dr. Murray will also describe assessment procedures for quantifying and qualifying cognitive-communication disorders as well as interventions for directly or indirectly remediating or compensating for such cognitive-communication disorders in a variety of healthcare settings. Conference Learning Objectives Participants will be able to: 1. Describe cognitive-communication abilities in typical aging and in common age-related disorders 2. Explain the Occupational Therapy approach to cognitive assessment. 3. Explain the Neuropsychology approach to evaluating cognitive decline and the influence on language abilities 4. Guest Speakers: Sylvia Davidson, BSc; MSc; OT Reg.(Ont.) Ms. Davidson is the Manager & Professional Practice Chief of Occupational Therapy at Baycrest. She received her education at the Universities of Western Ontario (BSc.) and Toronto (BScOT & MSc.). She holds a status lecturer appointment in the department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy at U of T, is the President of the Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists, and serves as the Chair of a CAOT Dementia network, which aims to build capacity and support OTs working in dementia care. Prior to Baycrest, Ms. Davidson worked as a Psychogeriatric Resource Consultant in the Regional Geriatric Program and as the Advanced Practice Leader in Geriatrics at the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute. With her expertise in geriatrics and dementia care, she was interviewed on an episode of the CBC Radio program “Spark”, which focused on the “Dementia Hackathon”, has presented at Inter-professional Rounds, and has hosted a lunchbreak webinar with colleagues across the province. Kelly Murphy, Ph.D. CPsych Dr. Murphy is a clinical neuropsychologist at Baycrest. She obtained her Ph.D. from Western University and completed a post-doctoral research fellowship at Rotman Research Institute. Presently she is the clinical lead for a psychology service focused on early identification and memory intervention for older adults at risk of dementia. She is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Toronto and holds Adjunct faculty positions in psychology at York University and Queen’s University. Dr. Murphy is the lead creator of an innovative program called Learning the Ropes for Living with MCI®, which is designed to optimize brain health and well- being in people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Dr. Murphy has authored and co-authored peer-reviewed research publications, as well as a book called ‘Living with Mild Cognitive Impairment: A guide to maximizing brain health and reducing risk of dementia’. She has written and been interviewed for many articles on the topic of memory and aging and contributes to a blog for Psychology Today. Laura Murray, Ph.D., SLP(C) Dr. Murray is the School Director and a Full Professor at Western University in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders in the Faculty of Health Sciences. She holds an Adjunct Professor position at Indiana University and a Distinguished Visiting Professor position at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. She is also a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Prior to her academic positions, Dr. Murray worked as a speech-language pathologist in both school and hospital settings. Her research interests include examining how cognitive deficits interact with the language abilities of adults with neurogenic communication disorders, and developing assessment and treatment strategies for these patient populations. She teaches and has published and presented extensively in the fields of aphasia, right hemisphere disorders, dementia, traumatic brain injury, and typical aging. She co-authored a graduate-level textbook entitled Neurogenic disorders of language and cognition: Evidence-based clinical practice.
