WHAT IS TRANSITION YEAR? …a bridge to enable students to make the transition from the more dependent type of learning associated with Junior Cycle to the more independent learning environment associated with Senior Cycle. …encourages the development of a wide range of transferable critical thinking and creative problem solving skills. WHAT IS TRANSITION YEAR?

GARDA VETTING Inline with child protection legislation, anyone working with young children or vulnerable adults must be garda vetted. Consequently, as soon as your son turns 16 we are obliged to ask him, with your consent, to be subject to this process. In TY there are some activities that he will be involved in, such as shared reading programme, sports coaching and some work placements, where anyone 16 and over is required to have undergone garda vetting.

At the end of the academic year each student is awarded credits from subject teachers. Students are also awarded marks for attendance and work experience . Each student presents their eportfolio at the end of the year at an interview which is conducted by the Co-ordinator and another staff member. At TY graduation students are presented with their final certifcate ( Distinction, merit ,pass) TY ASSESSMENT

Application Process ➢ Students must apply by filling out the standard Application Form themselves. ➢ Each student will be interviewed by the Transition Year Coordinator, a member of staff and an independent external interviewer (Selection Committee) and a marking scheme applies on which places will be allocated. Those candidates who are judged to be equal following this process (with respect to the criteria below) and where there are places still available, will be allocated places by means of a lottery to determine the order in which places will be filled. A waiting list of 5 students will be applied to be reverted to should a student refuse an offer.
TY Selection ➢ Through their application form and their interview the candidate for Transition Year needs to display the following criteria; 1. A positive discipline record or a greatly improved discipline record. 2. A positive attitude towards school work both in class and regarding homework. 3. Excellent attendance and punctuality. 4. A positive attitude and involvement in other school activities. 5. That they will contribute positively to the Transition Year Programme and the experience of the other students on the programme by having a respectful attitude towards their peers and a willingness to contribute to group-work and activities. 6. That they can demonstrate how they in particular will benefit from their participation in Transition Year. 7. A willingness to participate in all aspects of the programme including a variety of sporting, cultural, spiritual, physical, vocational and inter-personal activities. 8. That they have prepared sufficiently for the selection process by researching the Transition Year programme, reflecting on what they wish to gain from the experience and considering what they can offer the programme. 9. Students who are accepted into the programme will be asked to sign a Contract of Behaviour and Learning, confirming their acceptance of the offer. 10. This contract will be binding on students and parents.
