Deciding what to do after high school should not be left up to chance. Possible options: - 4 year college/university or community college - Vocational and trade schools - Military

More things to start doing: ● Explore trade schools at: www.oakgov.com/advantageoakland/mi- tradeschool/Pages/default.asp ● Explore military careers at: www.careersinthemilitary.com And…. ● Maintain good grades. ● Keep a rigorous senior schedule. ● Check your service hours on x2VOL
College application process: ● College applications are usually available in August. ● Apply online to college websites, request paper applications, or sign up for “on-site admissions”(colleges and dates to be determined) at LOHS. More info to follow. ● Set up a free Parchment account at: https://www.parchment.com/log-in/ to send your transcripts to colleges electronically. ● If you have taken the SAT or ACT, have your scores sent to the college through ACT (www.actstudent.org) or SAT (www.collegeboard.org) ● All current juniors (class of 2021) will be taking the SAT in the fall. Date to be announced.
College application process continued: ● Some colleges may waive test scores. Check with your college. ● Submit application fees or fee waiver with your application. ● Give teachers and counselors at least two weeks to complete letters of recommendation. Provide a resume and your college information. ● Have applications completed by November 1st. ● LOHS counselors will begin processing applications after school starts in the fall. ● Check the counseling page on the LOHS website for additional information. ● Contact your counselor in the fall for assistance.
On-site admissions: ● Some colleges send representatives to LOHS to meet with students for an “on-site admissions” meeting, and give them an immediate admission decision. ● A schedule of the on-site admissions will be available in the fall and students will be able to sign up through SignUpGenius. ● Instructions will be sent via email regarding this process in the fall.
How colleges may evaluate you: ● Academic record ● Rigor of curriculum ● Grade trends ● ACT/SAT scores (some may waive, check college website) ● Essays, if required (but always recommended) ● Letters of recommendation, if required ● Extracurricular activities ● Community service
Common Application highlights ● Used by over 500 colleges and universities ● One application is used for all member institutions. ● Follow the unique directions for each cooperating school at: https://www.commonapp.org ● Teachers and counselors submit their applications online when you invite them through Common Application. ● Counselors will send your transcripts directly through Common App. ● You are responsible for sending your SAT or ACT scores to Common App. ● Common App is usually available after August 1st.
Sending Transcripts electronically: ● Unless you applied through the Common App, colleges/universities want you to send your transcripts electronically. ● You must set up a free account through Parchment at https://www.parchment.com/log-in/ ● Once you set up your Parchment account, you will select Lake Orion High School as your current school, and then you will select the colleges that you want your transcripts sent to. ● Keep in mind that college application processing and transcript requests will be processed after we return to school in the fall.
Vocational and Technical schools ● Vocational and technical schools offer training in areas such as broadcasting, cosmetology, computer programming, court reporting, mechanics, medical fields, skilled trades, and other fields. ● These programs often have on-the-job apprenticeship training. ● You can find a list of accredited schools by state and/or program at Real Work Matters at www.rwm.org
Military options ● Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines. ● There are also opportunities in the Coast Guard, National Guard, Merchant Marines, and the Reserves. ● The ASVAB is the entrance exam that can be scheduled with recruiters. ● ROTC programs are available for students who want to attend college before entering the military. ● More information at: http://www.todaysmilitary.com
NCAA information: ● If you are planning on playing a sport in college, you will need to register with the NCAA. ● Register at http://www.eligilibilitycenter.org ● You must send test scores directly from SAT or ACT using the code 9999 to select the NCAA Eligibility Center. ● Please contact Mrs. Bell to have your transcripts sent to the NCAA, or, if you have any questions at christine.bell@lok12.org
Senior year activities: ● Attend FAFSA Night (date to be announced) at LOHS for financial aid information and FAFSA application information. ● Check out the new FAFSA chatbox website where you and your parents can text questions at: https://getfafsahelp.org/cb/ ● Attend fall College Representative visits at LOHS. ● Attend the winter College Fair at LOHS and watch for other college fairs online. ● Look for scholarships online with websites like: www.fastweb.com or www.studentscholarships.org Check your chosen college’s website for scholarships, and check the LOHS website for scholarships which post after Thanksgiving.
