Senate Bill (SB) 1383 CA’s Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Reduction Strategy • Effective January 1, 2022, all residences, multifamily complexes, and businesses will be required to separate organic waste from the trash. • Organic waste consists of green waste, food waste and food soiled paper. • SB 1383 requires ambitious contamination reduction, maximized recycling and diversion, and comprehensive program education and implementation. • Standardizes cart colors throughout California. • CalRecycle has a dedicated webpage below for with further information: https://www.calrecycle.ca.gov/climate/slcp Page 2
Why was SB 1383 passed? Supporting CA’s Climate Change Mitigation Goals Organic waste, when decomposing, releases methane, a powerful Greenhouse Gas which contributes to Global Climate Change. ➢ SB 1383 mandates that organic waste is recycled into compost or renewable energy. 1 in 4 children go hungry in CA. SB 1383 sets a goal of 20% edible food recovery. ➢ SB 1383 requires jurisdictions to provide an edible food recovery program and education to large commercial food generators to help ensure edible food is recovered and provided to those in need. Avoid Contamination Recycle Right • SB 1383 requires proper usage of all three (3) containers. Safely Dispose of Household Hazardous Waste County of Orange Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Program • Universal, hazardous and electronic waste products are products that are flammable, corrosive, reactive, or toxic. These products can be dangerous to the public and the environment. • This waste must be disposed of properly, and it is illegal to dispose of hazardous, universal, or electronic waste in your Waste Management containers. • Orange County residents can dispose of household hazardous waste safely, and for free, at any of the four locations below: • Anaheim 1071 N. How to Use Your Kitchen Food Scraps Pail Collecting Food Waste Inside the Home • As we approach January 1, 2022, Waste Management will be delivering one (1) Kitchen Food Scraps Pail to each household. • Utilize this pail to collect food scraps inside your kitchen and empty directly into your organics collection container. • If you choose to collect your organic waste inside a bag, please empty the contents directly into the organics container and discard the bag into the trash container. • Please note, this pail is a one-time delivery for the start of this program. If you desire additional pails, these can be purchased from online retailers. Page 9
Keep Your Organics Container Clean & Fresh Tips & Tricks • Empty out, rinse, and dry your kitchen pail daily. • You may line your pail and organics container with a piece of paper or paper napkin to absorb any liquids and food waste. • Consider lining your organics container with a layer of green waste before placing your food waste inside. • Consider buying a charcoal filter for your organics bin to mitigate odors. • Keep your food scraps in the fridge or freezer and empty it directly into the organics cart on your service day to minimize odors. • All single-family residents are eligible to receive one free cart exchange per year, per waste type (excluding food pails).
