• Organic waste consists of green waste, food waste
    and food soiled paper.
• SB 1383 requires ambitious contamination
reduction, maximized recycling and diversion, and
    comprehensive program education and
    implementation.
• Standardizes cart colors throughout California.
• CalRecycle has a dedicated webpage below for

Why was SB 1383 passed?
Supporting CA’s Climate Change Mitigation Goals

Organic waste, when decomposing, releases
methane, a powerful Greenhouse Gas which
contributes to Global Climate Change.
➢ SB 1383 mandates that organic waste is
recycled into compost or renewable energy.

1 in 4 children go hungry in CA. SB 1383 sets a
goal of 20% edible food recovery.
➢ SB 1383 requires jurisdictions to provide an
edible food recovery program and education
to large commercial food generators to
help ensure edible food is recovered and
   provided to those in need.
