With Mott as his trainer, he has a real shot in this one. *Plus One Parfait is a real runner from across the big pond and has the largest lifetime earnings, but has only won one Derby prep race, the U.A.E. Derby. You never know, but foreign horses have difficulty running in the KY Derby! *Roadster is a late runner and loves the distance on the dirt. Ranked 5th overall & at 7-2, he has a real chance and should be a solid bet if he gets a good ride. He was 1st in the Santa Anita Derby by a head after a come from behind effort. I think he’s the one to beat! *Improbable won the Los Alamito Futurity back in Dec/18, but lost in the Arkansas Derby by a full length in the mud. He appeared to shy away from the slop, but has a real good shot. I like this horse. In the end, Omaha Beach will be the bet for most! 8 13 Humane Society The Kentucky Derby Trophy & Winners Circle of Harrison County, KY Trophy PAWS & CLAWS: Flora Shropshire Animal Shelter - Cynthiana Ky Since the 50th running of the Kentucky Derby in 1924, Churchill Downs has annually Call: presented a gold trophy to the winning owner of the famed "Run for the Roses®." History is unclear if a trophy was presented in 1875 to the winner of the first Kentucky (859) 234-7138 Derby, and trophy presentations were sporadically made in following years. Finally, in Pet Adoptions 1924, legendary Churchill Downs President Matt Winn commissioned that a standard design be developed for the "Golden Anniversary" of the Derby. www.hshc.us Dodge Jack Elaro Fredo Kassie Outside of the jeweled embellishments that were added to note special Derby anniversaries in 1949 (75th), 1974 (100th), and 1999 (125th), only one change has been made to the original design. For the 125th Kentucky Derby in 1999, Churchill Downs officials decided to defer to racing lore and change the direction of the decorative horse- shoe displayed on the 14-karat gold trophy. The horseshoe, fashioned from 18-karat gold, had pointed downward on each of the trophies since 1924. To commemorate Derby 125 the change was made and the horseshoe was turned 180 degrees so that its ends pointed up. The trophy now annually incorporates the horseshoe with the ends pointing up. Like us on Facebook Racing superstition decrees that if the horseshoe is turned down all the luck will run out. Since 1975 the trophy has been created by New England Sterling located in North Attleboro, MA. The trophy, which is topped by an 18-karat gold horse and rider, includes horseshoe shaped handles, is 22 inches tall and weighs 56 ounces, excluding its jade base. The entire trophy is handcrafted with the exception of the horse and rider that are both cast from a mold. To complete the trophy by April, craftsmen begin the process during the fall of the previous year and literally work hundreds of hours. The trophy is believed to be the only solid gold trophy that is annually awarded to the winner of a major American sporting event. Winners Circle The Kentucky Derby Winner's Circle, has been a Derby tradition since the 1938 Ken- tucky Derby. Prior to that time, there were various areas used for honoring the Kentucky Derby winner. From 1875–1929, the Kentucky Derby winner would stand on the race- track in a circled area drawn out in chalk dust, leading to the phrase "winner's circle." Track officials moved the presentation from the track from 1930-37 and made the winner’s presentation in an area that adjoined the clubhouse. Finally for the 64th running in 1938, a presentation stand, featuring a new electric odds board was constructed. Every Kentucky Derby winner since that time has been led to the infield presentation area to be honored. Since 1944, the winner's circle has in- cluded a landscaped horseshoe floral arrangement that the winning horse is led into for photographs. Although the winner's circle only has been used to honor the Kentucky Derby winner, a limited number of couples have used the site for weddings over the years. And although officials do not encourage the practice, as a last request, the ashes of some involved in the horse racing and breeding industry have discreetly been spread on the hallowed ground. www.kentuckyderby.com
9 12 “This Old House is Still Standing” by Mary Riggs LeBus This Week: The History of Churchill Downs From Churchilldowns.com: Horse racing in Kentucky is rich in history, dating back to 1789 when the first race course was laid out in Lexington. However, it was almost 100 years later, in 1875, that Churchill Downs officially opened & began its tradition as "Home of the Kentucky Derby." The Founding of Churchill Downs began in 1872, when Colonel Meriwether Lewis Clark traveled to England & France in 1872. Clark attended the Epsom Derby in England, which sparked his ambition to create a spectacle horse racing event in America. Upon his return to the states, Clark began the development of the racetrack, with intentions to showcase the Kentucky breeding industry that eventually became known as "Churchill Downs." The track was constructed on eighty acres of land that Clark leased from his uncles, John & Henry Churchill, approximately three miles south of downtown Louisville. To fund the initial construction, Clark raised money by selling membership subscriptions to the track. With 320 membership subscriptions sold for $100 each, Clark raised a total of $32,000. This profit was used to construct a clubhouse, grandstand, Porter’s Lodge, & six stables on site for the opening of the track. Throughout the years, the initial structures still stand, but the racetrack has continued to grow & modernize. Today, Churchill Downs spans 147 acres with its most significant structure being the Twin Spires, an architectural feature which sits atop the grandstand & has become the universally recognized symbol for Antique Talk Churchill Downs & the Kentucky Derby. Churchill Downs had its first official race day, which formally opened the track on May 17, 1875. For the opening meet, Clark created three major stakes races- the Kentucky Derby, Kentucky Oaks & Clark Handicap. These were modeled after three premier races in England- the Epsom Derby, Epsom Oaks & St. Leger Stakes. The winner of the first race was Bonaventure; however the winner of the day’s featured race, the Kentucky Derby, was a three-year-old chestnut colt, Aristides. Owned by H.P. McGrath, Aristides was trained by & ridden by two African-Americans, Ansel Williamson & Oliver Lewis. A crowd reaching 10,000 spectators witnessed the fifteen thoroughbreds run the first 1.5 mile long Kentucky Derby. Aristides’ victory launched a tradition that has been held continuously at Churchill Downs annually since their debut in 1875, making this year the 145th running of Kentucky 1930's Kentucky Derby Derby & Kentucky Oaks. Horse Race Today, Churchill Downs Racetrack is owned & operated by Churchill Downs Inc. Acme Cardboard Beer Sign Churchill Downs currently holds the record for the longest-running, continuous San Francisco sporting event in the United States. In 1875, the track’s inaugural meet reached nearly 10,000 spectators, unknowingly initiating an annual ritual that is now universally recognized bringing in record-breaking crowds of more than Value $500.00 170,000. With many changes over the course of three centuries, the Kentucky Derby is known to be the most exciting two minutes in sports.
