About Our Execut rn More ive D Lea EXECUTIVE irec t or ADDRESS It has been my absolute pleasure to take the helm at the New England Center for Circus Arts. After 14 years in non-profit leadership in Texas, I return to the magical world of circus, where I first met and worked with our founders and other core faculty at NECCA. Brattleboro has been a welcoming community and I look forward to meeting and collaborating with more of you. Our mission states that we employ “the transformative power of circus arts” enabling “a diverse and inclusive community of artists, teachers and students to realize their dreams.” It has never been more important than now. Through this pandemic and a world of civil unrest, NECCA has been there for so many. We helped people fly, get empowered, maintain their mental health, instill laughter, and support each other and the community like a circus family does. We also • Delivered high quality circus arts programming to over 1,000 youth and adult students in 798 individual classes. • Empowered 37 students in our ProTrack Program. • Maintained employment for 51 staff who continue to work and thrive in our community. • Encouraged staff commitment to the community with a blood drive, driving meals to those in need, and instilling our Resilience Garden on site. • Demonstrated a commitment to diversity and inclusion with a new LGBTQ student scholarship program and our developing BIPOC scholarship initiative this year. As state restrictions begin to lift and people continue to be vaccinated, we are ever more hopeful for our future, and I am blessed to be leading this group of talented individuals. We have grown from a small organization, and in the coming months, we will be examining how we can improve what we are doing and determine a course for our future as a leader in the circus arts. We could not have accomplished all that we have without the generous support of our donors and this community. Thank you for all you have done and continue to do for all those that benefit from NECCA’s presence in this community. The money we raise each year at the Circus Spectacular and from our annual appeals helps us in our commitment to provide excellent programming to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. I’d like to leave you with this quote from Violet, a 39 year old professional student. “NECCA is a series of perfect moments that have taught me it’s possible to live a life filled with complete joy.” Jennifer Struble, Executive Director
About Our Founde rn More rs Lea FOUNDERS NOTE A year ago, after I produced the 10th annual Circus Spectacular at Brattleboro’s historic Latchis Theater, I recall thinking that it was time to find a way to mix things up for our second decade of Spectacular fundraisers. Exactly one week later, NECCA responded to the developing pandemic crisis and closed our doors. Thankfully, it was a temporary closure. Our team did a lot of research into safety protocols—how long bleach needs to sit damply on a surface before that surface is actually clean, whether alcohol-based cleaners affect the tensile strength of aerial fabrics, how to adjust the curriculum to keep us six feet apart and masked, and other things that I never anticipated as part of my profession. With the vigilance of our Executive Director, Jamie Hodgson, we had more guidance than the rest of the country seemed to have, and our students were able to return to no-contact, socially- distanced training by June. Fast forward. NECCA has weathered a lot of change this year, full of challenges and opportunities. Focusing on the opportunities, Jamie Hodgson left to take a fabulous position in her home state of Connecticut doing important work leading diversity and inclusion initiatives. Though we weren’t able to throw her the blowout party she deserved for her important work at NECCA, we wished her well. Wendy Harrison stepped in as interim Executive Director and provided important transition leadership while NECCA’s intrepid Board of Directors embarked on a search for a replacement. We had many strong candidates from across the United States, and our top candidate seemed quite happy to leave Texas for Vermont. And so it was with great pleasure that we welcomed Jenna Struble as NECCA’s new Executive Director. Meanwhile, I was left with the realization that an in-person, 11th annual Circus Spectacular was simply not possible. But an online production in which we could invite both performers and audience from around the world was a very interesting opportunity! So here we all are, joining from around the world with sparkle and heart, sharing an evening of razzle and dazzle to raise money for NECCA’s students. Circus is a much- needed opportunity to rise above challenges with a safe and supportive community of people who dare to dream, and you all are a part of that. With gratitude, NECCA Founders Elsie Smith & Serenity Smith Forchion

She believes that circus saved her from a dark path she could have taken and that all children should have access to the magic that circus is. She strongly believes her job now, as someone who was saved by finding herself in the ring, is to create and hold space for other children who may need that ring to find home too.
