the influence ART DECO STYLE By the mid 1900s, modern advances in technology in the world as well as post war economy started to exert influence on shophouse architecture. As the world was introduced to airliners, ships, and motorcars, shophouses also began to reflect the wonders of the Machine Age. The organically inspired ornamentation of the earlier period was discarded in favour of more streamlined designs, curved corners and strong horizontal lines. Geometric shapes, zigzag roofs and flagpoles were also common. Balestier Road Serangoon WHERE CAN YOU FIND THEM? Cavan Road Other then Tiong Bahru, Art Deco shophouses can be found in Bukit Pasoh Bukit Pasoh – most notably the Dong Ya building, which now Club Street Tiong Bahru houses Potato Head. An adaptive form of Art Deco, termed Tropical Deco can also be found in shophouses along Club Street and Cavan Road. BALESTIER heritagE Rich in heritage, history and architecture to most locals and H1 even tourist, Balestier offers not only heritage and pretty shophouses and the area might just become the next hip neighbourhood of Singapore. From Bak Kut Teh and Chicken Rice to cosy cafes and fancy bikes - Balestier has more to offer than one might expect. The pulsating Balestier Road, running like a vein through the neighbourhood, was named after Joseph Balestier, who was the first American Consul to Singapore in the early 19th century. Originally occupied by sugar cane fields, the area was filled with cotton factories in the early 1900s. As Balestier became populated in the following decades, the popular Art Deco style became the new face of local houses. In 1986 the architecturally famous Balestier Point building opened on the site of the former Ruby Theatre, which was a symbol for Balestier once being an entertainment district. Balestier is located in the planning area of Novena, the central region of Singapore. The area is home to rows of shophouses, low-rise apartments, condominiums, hotels and commercial buildings as well as a shopping mall. There are also several lighting and electrical shops along Balestier Road, it is also home to Ceylon Sports Club. Preserving the unique features and holding memories of historical moments, Balestier Road tells the tale that spans nearly 180 years and is a borne witness to Singapore’s remarkable journey from a British trading post to modern city-state.
ART DECO SHOPHOUSE The Art Deco architecture style was developed in Europe and the United States during the 1920s-1930s. They are a stark contrast from their surrounding buildings, almost as if someone had transplanted these buildings from 1930s America and stuck them in the middle of Balestier Road, sticking out like the proverbial “sore thumb”. The building on the left was one of the nightlife hotspots in Balestier. This was around the 1940s and 50s. The region housed some 70,000 people and along this road were at least three theatres and a bustling nightlife. The Hoover Theatre opened in 1960 screening westerns, Chinese variety shows and Indian films. It closed in 1996 and is now being reconverted into a hotel. NEO-CLASSICAL STYLE HOUSES Along the Pegu Road and Martaban Road, these roads are special for their pre-war terrace houses. These houses were built in a European, neo-classical style and were arranged to follow the gentle slope upwards. It’s quite different from the Baba House or the houses along Blair Plains. One can enjoy this appealing walk uphill without a ‘cut’ at each apartment in a place more western than asian. SIM KWONG HO SHOPHOUSE Built in 1926, “Sim Kwong Ho” shophouse proved to be a point of intrigue due to the inscription on the front of the building best known for its Chinese Baroque-style motifs. The introduction of the Chinese Baroque style was due to a rubber boom, where the newly rich showed off their wealth on their new buildings by ornamenting it with European architectural styles and features, while retaining their distinct Eastern influence and local flavours. Along Balestier Road are a The architectural style of the shophouse definitely made it stand number of shophouses designed out from others and the intricate detailing on the shophouse doors in Singapore eclectic style. really raised some eyebrows.
