Busse Woods UNEXPECTED OUTDOOR A DV E N T U R E S BY QUINCY KOETZ Gazing out the window on a sunny Monday morning, I saw nothing but tall skyscrapers. My wife, Dee, was folding the last of our moving boxes as I glanced longingly at my old hiking boots. Catching my eye, she smiled. “We need a new destination,” Dee declared. Living in downtown Milwaukee was a new experience. I grew up in the rural Northeast, and Dee was raised in a small coastal town in California. Both of us deeply missed the outdoors and were craving a nature getaway. After a quick internet search, we discovered Busse Woods, a beautiful, 3,558 acre, all-seasons nature destination. Just a few clicks later, we booked our trip, and I promised my hiking boots they’d escape the closet that coming weekend. Little did I know our weekend getaway would turn into a year-round retreat, one we’d revisit time and time again.
SPRING Finding wilderness near Chicago The drive to Busse Woods took just over an hour, but we felt like we were a world away. The temperature that morning broke 70 degrees for the first time in that year, and we rolled our windows down as we immersed ourselves in the thick canopy. Lacing up my boots, Dee and I tackled Red Loop, a 7.2-mile hike. Trail runners jogged past us, and SUMMER just as I was tempted to give chase, “It’s a National Natural Dee grabbed my hand to slow Landmark,” I explained. me down. “This is Illinois before downtown “Look at those trees,” she said Chicago emerged.” breathlessly. “It’s like something We were both spellbound by Fish tales out of a Tolkien novel.” Busse Woods’ natural beauty. “The last time I cast a line, Once we had finished our hike, my fishing pole had a picture “WE WERE BOTH we found an excellent microbrewery less than ten minutes from the of Snoopy on it,” Dee admitted to the helpful purveyors at SPELLBOUND BY preserve: Mikerphone Brewing. Placid waters greeted us as we cast off into the main pool. We paddled lazily and took in the gorgeous scenery. Finally, we dropped our lines near a small island by the dam. Minutes later, I felt an insistent tug on my fishing rod. “Watch out!” I shouted, and Dee paddled over to get a better view. I reeled in the line, and sure enough, a Largemouth Bass wriggled and flopped above the water. Dee yelped and ducked as it splashed her. I quickly unhooked the fish from the line and tossed it back. A small shout of excitement from nearby told me Dee hooked a fish of her own. We spent the rest of the afternoon splashing and laughing as the sun went down. TOPGOLF’S NEW STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITY IS NOW OPEN IN SCHAUMBURG
Our large group split into smaller groups—6 people per bay. We were glad to see comfortable couches and an exceptional drink menu waiting for us! This is not how I pictured myself golfing— it was exciting! People were cheering each other on and bending over in laughter at their own mistakes. Our company reserved Topgolf’s Rooftop Terrace, and we were blown away by the sweeping views of the outfield and the city beyond. The rooftop terrace had mood lighting, lounge furniture, outdoor fire features, and a private bar. It was the kind of place you get so comfortable in that you have to be gently reminded to leave at closing. “No lefty left behind,” said our hostess as she showed us where we could find the left-handed clubs. This gave me a much-needed confidence boost—at the very least, “What do you know about golf?” I’d be using the right clubs. our company’s CEO asked us Most of our group had never been non-golfers on the short drive from to a driving range before, and this Schaumburg Convention Center to one looked particularly high tech. Once the nerves faded, our group of amateurs eagerly got into the full swing of things—pun intended. In fact, I even won a game! I was so proud I took a photo of the scoreboard on the flat-screen and posted it to Facebook. I’ve won board games and trivia nights, but winning a sporting event? That was a first for me. “So, how was it?” our CEO asked later that night when we met back up with our group. While we spent the night hitting golf balls, we were mostly drinking cocktails, chatting, and cheering for one another. You would need a hundred cheesy team building retreats to create as much organic comradery as we did around that hitting bay. She could have taken us out to a fancy dinner or a ball game in town, however, we would have missed out on the side-splitting laughs, high fives, funny videos, and stories. “Let’s just say we all volunteer to attend the conference again
