        UNEXPECTED OUTDOOR

                 BY QUINCY KOETZ

Gazing out the window on a sunny Monday
morning, I saw nothing but tall skyscrapers.
My wife, Dee, was folding the last of our
moving boxes as I glanced longingly at my
old hiking boots. Catching my eye, she smiled.
“We need a new destination,” Dee declared.
Living in downtown Milwaukee was a new
experience. I grew up in the rural Northeast,
and Dee was raised in a small coastal town
in California. Both of us deeply missed the
outdoors and were craving a nature getaway.
After a quick internet search, we discovered
Busse Woods, a beautiful, 3,558 acre, all-seasons
nature destination. Just a few clicks later,
we booked our trip, and I promised my hiking
boots they’d escape the closet that coming
weekend. Little did I know our weekend
getaway would turn into a year-round retreat,
one we’d revisit time and time again.

“Looks like you had fun at your
      conference,” my husband said,
“or should I say, golf retreat?”
I laughed and mimed my newly
      perfected golf swing. He was
a touch jealous of my recent
work trip, and I didn’t blame him.
If he had been posting photos
of Topgolf while away, I would
have felt the same way. But the
      truth was, my co-workers and
      I did attend a work
      conference.
      It was just so
      successful that
      we ended it with
      a fun celebration.
