CHIC MEMBERSHIP, POLICIES & INFORMATION ABOUT CHIC Community House & Information Centre (CHIC) is a non-profit community organization committed to meeting the needs of the Kansai community. CHIC is a place for Japanese and foreigners to socialize and connect in a casual and fun atmosphere. MEMBERSHIP CHIC membership allows you, your family, and visitors from outside Kansai to participate in all of CHIC’s classes, trips, and events at special member prices. Membership for a year (12 months from signing up) is ¥ 6,000 and ¥ 4,000 for six months. If you have been a CHIC member for five consecutive years, the membership fee is ¥ 3,000 for one year. Please note, payment for any series class and some special events or classes are available strictly to members only. SPECIAL CHILDREN’S MEMBERSHIP If you only attend the children’s classes, the membership fee is ¥ 3,000 for a year and ¥ 2,000 for six months. REGISTRATION/CANCELLATION/REFUND POLICY If you wish to attend a class or a trip, your registration will not be considered confirmed until your payment is made; you will be placed on the waiting list instead. Payment should be made at least seven days prior to a trip. Please Note: While we understand sometimes your plans or circumstances change, if you need to cancel less than seven business days prior to a class or trip NO refund will be given. TRIP PARTICIPANTS Please be aware that during CHIC organized outings, CHIC is not responsible for lost items, personal injury, property damage, and delays due to circumstances beyond our control, such as traffic jams, train delays and weather conditions. CHILDREN’S CLASSES 1. English Playgroup English Playgroup is for all children aged 1 – 4, who are accompanied by a parent or caregiver. Children and adults will join in with songs, games, crafts, story time, and free play. The class is conducted in English. 3. Baby Massage Spend precious quality time with your little one in this lovely baby massage class. Trained baby massage therapists will guide you through this class. Piano Lessons For levels ranging from beginners to advanced, these music lessons can be the start of a new passion or aid you in preparing for music entrance exams. Mayu is a classically trained teacher who went to Europe for her musical studies and experiences, and she is eager to share her experiences and teach her students. 7. Ikebana Ikenobo Ikenobo is a style of Ikebana (Japanese floral art). It is the method of placing flowers in a purposeful, meaningful and beautiful way. Ikebana Mishoryu Nakayama Mishoryu uses seasonal and mainly indigenous flora in natural style arrangements to compliment other traditional Japanese arts. 9. Oshie Oshie, which literally means “pressed picture,” is a traditional form of Japanese handicraft from the Edo period. Like a jigsaw puzzle, the picture is made up of many pieces. Each piece is wrapped in beautiful kimono fabric, padded with cotton in between, and is nailed/glued together to create a beautiful three-dimensional raised picture. Decorating with Flowers Kazuko studied flower arrangement in Paris. 11. Washi Covered Tea Box Cover a small tea box in beautiful patterned washi paper. At the end of the class, take home a functional and attractive piece. Washi Doll Making Class Setsuko Horiuchi has spent a lifetime involved in the art of Washi Doll making. You may have already seen some of her work displayed in the CHIC shop. Learn how to make these delightful dolls and take your very own doll home. VARIOUS CLASSES 13. Book Club Looking for some lively and vibrant literary discussion? Join our once-a-month Book Club at CHIC where we will discuss in-depth books from differing genres and cultures. Over the course of the semester we will cover four different novels and talk in detail about the intention and emotion of each book, and of course, our feelings towards them. 15. Kimono Dressing Kimono and yukata are traditional Japanese garments that have charmed people around the world with their beauty, style, and traditional aesthetic. There are many specific rules for when and how to wear kimono and yukata, known as kitsuke. In this class you will learn how to dress yourself properly in a kimono and also learn about different uses for the kimonos and yukatas. a. Beginner This course is a one-time lesson to learn the basics of kimono – history, structure, rules, and patterns – and to learn the way to get dressed in yukata with obi. Cross-Cultural Insights Living globally, we are constantly exploring how we ‘fit’ in our host countries. You will have an opportunity to access your own cultural profile and compare it to your home and host countries. Together, we will develop new perspectives on differences that you can apply for more effective cross- cultural communication. 18. Culture Talk Yumi Ayama, our fabulous and incredibly knowledgeable Kimono Dressing teacher hosts 3 different informative and thoughtful talks followed by a question and answer session. The first is about the meanings of patterns on kimonos and obis, the second on the Japanese mind– specifically on ambiguity, silence, and ah-mah-eh (⽢え), and the last talk concerns religion in modern Japan seen through the temples and shrines. Invaluable to newcomers and long term residents alike. 30. Taiwanese New Year Celebration Join our wonderful Richi as she shows you how to prepare a fabulous Taiwanese feast fit for a New Years Celebration. 60. Government Guest House and Imperial Palace The Kyoto State Guest House is a national reception facility to receive dignitaries invited to visit Japan as official guest of the Japanese Government. You can experience the long history, and the refined and varied culture of Kyoto there. The Imperial Palace had been the residence of the Imperial Family for over a thousand years, until the Meiji Emperor moved to Tokyo in 1869. 62. Ise Grand Shrine Ise Grand Shrine is a Shinto Shrine dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu Omikami. In the 18th century, people used to visit the Shrine on foot from Osaka, as it was an admiration amoung the people. 64. Kokedera Buddhism Experience Saihoji Temple and Moss Garden is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a lush green paradise.
