A Letter from our Pastor Report from the 71st Annual Conference of the International Council of Community Churches I bring you greetings from the International Council of Community Church- es (ICCC)! My youngest son, Rhys, and I had the privilege of attending the 71st Annual Conference of the ICCC in Dublin, Ohio during the 3rd week of July. Per usual, we (OK, I) was inspired by the music and the messages, but mostly by the faithful saints of God I get to see most every year at the con- ference. During my most re- cent sermon (July 25), I briefly recounted the rich history of the ICCC, how it formed as a merger between predominant- ly black community church- es and predominantly white community churches in 1950, before civil rights, during the era of Jim Crow segregation. But what I want you to see, represented in the photograph here, is the rich diversity of the ICCC that continues to this day. This picture (taken by Rhys Blevins!) represents the new board for the ICCC, taken at the close of the con- ference. Notice that in this photograph, you see men and women, black and white and Asian, gay and straight, urban and rural, west coast and east coast, north and south. Lots of non-profits and other agencies work hard to achieve the kind of diversity that comes so naturally to the ICCC, given our rich his- tory. I am proud that our church remains one of the top contributors to this great cause. I hope some more of you will join me at the conference next July, once again in Dublin! Back here at home, the Chapel has been far from sleepy as we have hosted 33 college students with Campus Crusade for Christ along with their leaders.
Letter from our Pastor Con’t Behind the scenes we have two very active committees preparing for a major initiative here at the Chapel: my thanks to the Capital Campaign Committee and the Design Team! I can’t say enough good things about their hard work and exciting accomplishments that will be made public in the coming months. Our worship attendance has leveled off after the Covid shut-down and re- opening—we are running at about 2/3 of our pre-Covid attendance for in-per- son worship. Our online worshipping community has grown considerably, but we don’t have great data for tracking that. Here’s an anecdotal data point: when I looked to see how many views our July 25 service (as of this writing on July 27), we had 138 views. We don’t know exactly how many people that represents, because some watch in groups, others are single adults. Our best guess is that a “view” represents 1.5 people. So 138 views roughly translates to 207 people in addition to the 87 in-person worshippers. That’s 294(ish) people! Not too shabby! (PS: if someone out there loves data and can help us track this better, please let me know!) Now for some sobering news: the CDC recommends, once again, that ev- eryone should wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccine status. Sigh. The church board has not met to consider changes in our current protocol, but it seems wise to me that we follow CDC recommendations given the virili- ty of the Delta variant. We have been so blessed that, to my knowledge, no members of the Chapel have perished because of COVID, and I sure pray we continue being able to say that. One local church recently had to shut down again after 14 individuals, including the pastor, contracted COVID. So let’s be smart, let’s mask up, let’s get the vaccine if we haven’t. You can even get the vaccine in your own home now by calling 813-932-6266. Easy! And on a personal note: I am hearing of so many pastors leaving the ministry because challenges in their churches have been amplified during this difficult, long, COVID year and a half. I feel so fortunate to serve such a healthy, lov- ing congregation. We may not be perfect, but we’re trying our best to follow Christ in the way of mercy, compassion, and grace. Keep it up, Chapel! We have something special here. Love and light, RevBlev

We Say Farewell to This Year’s Campus Cru Many church members have inquired about the “Campus Cru” that has been on our church calendar for nearly two months. The Cru consisted of college kids that came together to do some missionary work and enjoy beautiful Clearwater. They stayed in housing nearby and would use Chapel Hall as a meeting space. This year’s group was energetic, consid- erate, caring and excited about the Lord.We wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors!
