OUR JOURNEY Level 20 is a not for profit organisation SO FAR founded in 2015 by 12 women working in senior roles in private equity aligned around a common vision of improving gender diversity in the industry. We aim to inspire women to join and succeed in private equity by creating opportunities for them to interact and learn from the insights and experience of others. Our vision is underpinned by a focus on four key pillars: mentoring and development; networking and events; outreach and advocacy; and research. We are supported financially by 46 private equity firms (listed on pages 14 and 15), and by over 1,800 individual members who together help create a strong voice for improving gender diversity across the industry. A LETTER FROM THE CHAIR When we founded Level 20 in 2015 with a vision of improving gender diversity across the private equity industry, we knew that we were embarking on a journey! Our ambition continues to be to inspire women to succeed and to attract the next generation to join our dynamic industry. The last two years of that journey have been particularly exciting as our membership has grown to over 1,800 individuals and a number of initiatives, such as our mentoring programme and European expansion, have taken root and flourished. This success has only been possible because of the involvement of so many across the industry. In particular, I would like to thank the 46 sponsor firms that have provided the funding to enable Level 20 to grow and establish a professional organisation, led by our CEO, Jeryl Andrew. I would personally like to thank Jeryl and her team for their JENNIFER DUNSTAN tremendous commitment and hard work to make the vision a reality. CHAIR Finally, I would also like to thank the huge number of volunteers who have ensured that we have delivered so many initiatives. Looking to the future, we have ambitious plans. We will complete the rollout of Level 20 across Europe, and develop the four key pillars that underpin our work: mentoring and development; networking and events; outreach and advocacy; and research. The achievements As with any organisation, it is important that Level 20 continues to of Level 20 have evolve to ensure that it can achieve these objectives. Accordingly, it is exceeded even our timely to make some refinements to our governance structure. From own expectations the outset, Level 20 has been focused on inclusion: engaging with the and we now have industry as a whole, from small to large firms and with both women and over 1,800 members. men. It is important, therefore, that we reflect this in our structure. To this end, we have created an Advisory Council and I am delighted that This success has been six very senior industry leaders: James Brocklebank, Nic Humphries, Wol possible because of the Kolade, Cathrin Petty, Cheryl Potter and Emma Watford, have agreed involvement of so many to join, thus ensuring we have the breadth of skill and experience within the industry, necessary to guide the next stage of Level 20’s development. both at a firm and an Having had the great privilege of chairing Level 20 for the last two individual level. years, it is now time for me to pass on the baton and I am very pleased to announce that George Anson will succeed me to lead Level 20 for the next stage of the journey. George is well known to many of you and is currently Senior Advisor at HarbourVest Partners where he has worked for nearly 30 years, previously having led the investment and client service activities of the company across Europe. He is also a former chairman of Invest Europe. With the continued support and involvement of so many of you I am confident the next phase of our work will take us closer to our goal of 20% of senior roles being filled by women. 2 LEVEL 20 CHANGING THE FACE OF PRIVATE EQUITY 2018
A LETTER FROM THE CEO In the three years since the launch of Level 20, much has been achieved: 46 private equity firms have provided financial support, individual membership has grown rapidly to the current level of over 1,800 and the scale and scope of Level 20’s activities have increased significantly. As we look to the next phase of Level 20’s development, we have ambitious plans to further extend our reach and activities. The founders’ original initiative to put gender diversity on the agenda for the private equity industry was very timely. We have been encouraged by the level of engagement with our mission across the industry at all levels and particularly with the growth in interest across Europe. This expansion of Level 20 into Europe allows us to exchange ideas and JERYL ANDREW experiences and will help to create a strong voice for improving gender diversity in the industry across Europe. CEO Whilst significant progress has been made in recruiting more women at a junior level, particularly in investment roles, the challenge is to ensure that these women stay in private equity and build successful careers. Over 60% of Level 20’s members are younger women and it is this group that has the potential during the course of the next 10 to 15 years to reach positions of seniority. We will therefore in the next The founders’ original stage of our development focus much of our work on this group. I must also thank our sponsor firms whose financial contributions have made all this work possible and, finally, the founders without whose vision, commitment and hard work Level 20 would not exist.
