WIDENER UNIVERSITY HISTORY Founded in 1821 as a preparatory school for boys in Wilmington, Delaware, the institution moved to Pennsylvania in 1862, and was granted collegiate powers and privileges via universal charter by the Pennsylvania legislature in April of that year. Known from 1892 to 1972 as Pennsylvania Military College, though it had officially become PMC Colleges in 1966 when a nonmilitary, coeducational component was added, the name Widener College was adopted and the Corps of Cadets disbanded in 1972. Graduate programs were introduced in 1967 and the Delaware Law School acquired in 1975. In recognition of its comprehensive offerings, Widener College became Widener University in 1979. Widener has grown into an esteemed metropolitan university that connects curricula to social issues through civic engagement. It comprises seven schools and colleges that offer liberal arts and sci- ences, professional and preprofessional curricula leading to associate's, baccalaureate, master's, and doctorate degrees. The university's campuses in Chester and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware, serve more than 6,000 students. ACADEMIC DRESS The history of academic dress begins in the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the Portuguese University of Coimbra to wear gowns. In England during the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. It is still a question whether academic dress finds its sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or in civilian dress. Gowns may have been considered necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings used by medieval scholars. Hoods may have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap. The cap was later displaced by a headdress similar to ones now recognized as “academic.” European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress. In the United States, the practice of wearing academic apparel dates back to colonial times, but there was no uniform standard of approved attire until 1895 when a commission of leading American educators devised a code of academic dress. Although modified in 1932 by the American Council on Education, this code continues to govern the style of academic dress today. GOWNS The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the sleeve base hanging down in the tra- ditional manner. The rear part of the sleeve’s oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. It may be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctor’s degree has bell-shaped sleeves and may be worn open or closed. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns have no sleeve trimmings. The doctor’s may be faced on the front with black or colored velvet and with three bars of the same across the sleeves. If color is used, it is the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains, and it matches the edging or binding of the hood. The colors associated with the different disciplines include the following: Arts, Letters, and Humanities—White Music—Pink Commerce, Accountancy, and Nursing—Apricot Business—Drab Brown Philosophy and Psychology—Dark Blue Economics—Copper Physical Education—Sage Green Education—Light Blue Physical Therapy—Teal Engineering—Orange Public Administration—Peacock Blue Fine Arts—Brown Public Health—Salmon Pink Journalism—Crimson Science—Golden Yellow Law—Purple Social Work—Citron Library Science—Lemon Theology and Hospitality Management—Scarlet Medicine—Green HOODS Hoods are worn by those receiving graduate degrees. The colors used in the satin linings are drawn, customarily, from the official colors of the granting institution. Widener University’s colors are blue and gold. The trimming on the hood varies in color and usually indicates the field of study. 4
CAPS Mortarboards are generally worn as part of the academic costume. The long tassel fastened to the middle point of the cap’s top is black or a color appropriate to the subject, except that the doctor’s cap may have its tassel of gold threads. It is customary for degree candidates to wear the tassels on the right front side before degrees are conferred and to shift them to the left when the degrees are awarded. CORDS, MEDALLIONS, AND STOLES Widener University has a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the national honor society of universities. Founded in 1897, the society recognizes and encourages supe- rior scholarship in all academic disciplines. Those members of Phi Kappa Phi graduating today wear a gold cord to signify their scholastic ranking in the upper 10 percent of the class. Graduates who are members of academic honor societies for specific disciplines may also wear the official cord or medallion of the society as part of their academic regalia. The blue and gold cord signifies membership in Alpha Phi Sigma (National Criminal Justice Honor Society); burgundy and gold, Alpha Sigma Lambda (National Honor Society for Non-Traditional Adult Students); red, Beta Alpha Psi (International Financial Information Honor Society); red and green, Beta Beta Beta (National Biological Honor Society); gold and royal blue, Beta Gamma Sigma (Honor Society for AACSB-accredited business programs); royal blue, Eta Sigma Delta (International Hospitality Management Honor Society); blue, Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education); maroon and gold, Kappa Theta Epsilon (National Honor Society for Cooperative Education); white and maroon, Omega Chi Epsilon (Honor Society in Chemical Engineering); blue and white, Omicron Delta Kappa (National Leadership Honor Society); blue, Pi Gamma Mu (International Social Science Honor Society); red and silver blue, Phi Alpha Theta, (International History Honor Society); gold with blue and gold tassels, Psi Chi (National Honor Society in Psychology); lavender and white, Sigma Theta Tau (International Honor Society of Nursing); and orange, Tau Beta Pi (National Engineering Honor Society). A medallion with blue and gold ribbons signifies membership in Phi Alpha (National Social Work Honor Society). A medallion with red and gold ribbons signifies membership in Phi Beta Delta (International Scholars). A medallion on a scarlet ribbon indicates membership in Sigma Tau Delta (International English Honor Society). THE MACE A ceremonial staff, the mace is carried by the grand marshal of the university to open and close academic convocations. CONNECT THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA Widener's online Commencement Hub at widener.edu/celebrate2020 captures the excitement and pride felt by so many during this time. All are encouraged to visit the hub and view the graduation social media wall and the stories, photos, and inspiring videos of the Class of 2020. The hub also houses our virtual “Celebration of Graduates,” which opens on May 16, 2020, to honor the originally scheduled commencement date. This celebration features highlights of each graduate with a keepsake slide and includes extra videos. Widener University is incredibly proud of all its graduates and constructed this virtual space to rec- ognize and celebrate their achievements. Families and friends are invited to join us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and other social media using the #Widener2020 hashtag to commemorate the grad- uates, wish them well, and join in the celebration. We welcome your thoughts, memories, photos, and videos, and encourage you to share and connect with us online. 5

On your wings of wisdom, we have learned to soar. Now you are calling us to “Go and serve the world outside your door.” Widener! Widener! May we all, young and old, Bring only honor to the Widener Blue and Gold. 6
ORDER OF DEGREES Doctorate degrees are conferred first, followed by master’s, bachelor’s, and associate’s degrees. Widener University historically awards degrees in the order of the founding of schools and colleges of the university. In that tradition, degrees are conferred in the following order: School of Engineering in recognition of its status as the first discipline to confer degrees (1867), College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Nursing, School of Human Service Professions, and the Center for Extended Learning. Widener’s Delaware Law School and Commonwealth Law School hold separate graduation ceremonies. The list of degree candidates in this program is not an official indication of graduation. Since final action cannot always be taken before the publishing of the program, the university reserves the right to add or remove names and academic honors.
