Next time you drop by Adriance, you’ll notice a sleek new addition to the stately columns and stacks on the main f loor. The Short Story Dispenser, designed by the French company Short Édition, is a freestanding kiosk created to print short stories and poems on demand, connecting readers in Poughkeepsie with writers all over the world at the touch of a button. The stories print instantly on eco-friendly thermal paper. Readers can select length, genre, or intended audience, providing plenty of choices for children as well as adults— but the story itself is randomly pulled from collections curated by Short Édition and the Library District, bringing in a delightful element of surprise. In addition to the Short Story Dispenser, which will move periodically between branch libraries, the Library District has also acquired a Short Story Cube, which is a miniaturized version of the device made to travel to schools, senior centers, and other partner sites. The Cube is equipped with a cellular modem that allows its collection to update in the field, including original stories submitted by students and community members online. The Library District is making plans to include the Short Story Cube in this fall’s Big Read and will reach out to faculty at local schools to discuss loaning the Cube to them throughout the year. Browse the collection on the web and learn more at poughkeepsie-public-library.short-edition.com. 4 ADR: Adriance BRD: Boardman Road SPD: Sadie Peterson Delaney African Roots Branch Library
Oceans of Possibilities! Stop the Summer Slide! Keep your children engaged all summer to avoid the “summer slide” (also known as summer learning loss). According to Scholastic, studies about the summer slide have shown that “kids lose significant knowledge in reading and math over summer break, which tends to have a snowball effect as they experience subsequent skill loss each year.” Thankfully, there are many ways to incorporate math and reading into your kids’ summertime fun, and the Library District is here to help. Among many of the Library District’s children’s programs, a special Summer Reading Challenge runs from late June through the end of July. Children of all ages are encouraged to sign up to read and earn chances to win prizes. Visit a museum! Borrow a Library MAP Pass to the Stepping Stones Museum for Children. This museum incorporates math, science, and reading into fun, hands-on exhibits. Check out the Library District’s online subscription to Scholastic Teachables for printable activities, crafts, and mini-books to keep the kids busy. Borrow audiobooks from the Libby app to listen to in the car (Tip: audiobooks also count towards your kid’s reading time for the Summer Reading Challenge!) Try something new together! Learn a new craft, go on a hike, and cook together. Experiencing something new encourages quality time and meaningful conversations. Borrow some books to help you get started. The Library District is here to help keep you and your children from slipping down the summer slide. Visit any of our branches and talk to a librarian to learn more. All genres. No registration required. November. Due to the popularity of the main event, the months of April and July have been dedicated as “Camp NaNoWriMo” events. During Camp, writers set their own goals for writing or editing new or existing projects. PPLD staff member Charlotte Tramontana has participated in NaNoWriMo many times and teaches teens and adults alike that writing fiction is not nearly as daunting as it seems. “It’s been an awesome personal discovery that I love empowering people to tell the kinds of stories they’d like to read. I think there is a kind of intellectual gatekeeping at play with this particular art form, where people think, ‘There’s no way I’m good enough.’ But the important thing is getting something onto the page. Writing fiction is the greatest joy in my life. I love helping people to find the same creative joy in their own lives.” The greatest thing about these month-long challenges, according to Charlotte, is that NaNoWriMo doesn’t leave you time to second-guess yourself. “At the end of the thirty days, you’ll have created something—something messy and inexpert on the surface, maybe, but something with bones that you can continue to build on for as long as you like. And logging your 50,000th word is only as small of an occasion as you want to make it. It always feels like a little moment of glory in my head, and it’s nice to have friends cheering you on.” Another great thing about NaNoWriMo, Charlotte notes, is how easy it is to connect with writers in your region and around the world to share feedback and encouragement. Charlotte will offer a Crash Course for the Beginning Novelist in June with another one planned for October, in preparation for the upcoming NaNoWriMo events. Crash Course for the Beginning Novelist Saturday, June 25, 11 am, ADR Want to try writing a story, but not sure where to start? Want some tips for cool writer resources? You’ve come to the right place! In this workshop, we’ll go over tools and techniques, the basic blueprint all stories follow, and offer encouragement to help you get started writing creative narrative work. This course applies to all genres. Hosted by PPLD staff member Charlotte Tramontana in preparation for Camp NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). Teens and adults welcome. Registration required. The Poughkeepsie Book Festival on April 2 gathered over 650 visitors for the opportunity to interact with over 40 authors and illustrators. The terrific turnout included tabling from local community organizations, all hosted at the Poughkeepsie High School. While the event took place inside the High School gymnasium, Rover the Roaming Library bookmobile was parked right outside to greet the crowds! Visitors borrowed dozens of books, while some even signed up for a library card for the very first time. TJ Lamanna, Head of Community Outreach for the Poughkeepsie Library District said of Rover, “The clamoring for new and exciting material keeps us on our toes and proves to us that acquiring Rover and getting out to meet people where they are is vital to fulfilling the mission of the Poughkeepsie Public Library District.” Visitors were lucky enough to meet our adorable dog mascot Rover alongside Esteban the Magnificent, who reportedly gave out autographs. The Book Festival was successful in part thanks to the spirited high school students who chose to use their free time on the weekend to volunteer. Students from both Poughkeepsie High School and Our Lady of Lourdes arrived early Saturday morning and spent the day dressing up in costume as characters like Curious George and Mo Willems’ Elephant and Piggie. They took photographs with families and stayed to help clean up after the event was over. Their vibrant enthusiasm set the tone for the event, as community organizations and authors were all in attendance to showcase their works and highlight the importance of early literacy and reading. PPLD looks forward to offering more exciting events in the future to meet and fulfill the needs of residents in the City and Town of Poughkeepsie. The Library District applauds the dedicated staff who spent many hours planning the Book Festival, which was made possible in part by Friends of PPLD, the Poughkeepsie City School District, and Merritt Bookstore. If registration is required, see page 2 for details. 19
