Words from Home... Perry Hancock Ph.D. President & CEO I wish that you could have been with us at the annual Children’s Celebration Ban The theme of our banquet was “We Are His Masterpiece.” The Scripture verse quet. The event is attended each year by school teachers, church members, trustees, was Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ and other special friends who have played an important role in the success of our chil Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” dren. The banquet is sponsored every year by the Judy Lynn Bailey Endowment Fund. Everyone enjoyed musical performances by the children and the yearend slide show. Our speaker for the night was Miss Louisiana, Holli Conway. Holli provided an inspiring message that challenged everyone to seek the Lord with all their hearts. A final highlight of the banquet was the recognition of each child. Cottage par ents, family workers, administrative staff, and others identified traits in each child that can be found in a follower of Christ. Those qualities were placed on a certificate and presented to each child. I wish you could have seen their faces as they received such positive recognition. Thank you so much for your support which makes this work possible. Because of your special love and care, our children are growing into all that God has for them. You are truly changing lives every day at LBCH. When you have the opportunity, plan a visit to our campus in Monroe. We would love to give you a tour and thank you personally for making the Children’s Home a place Where God’s Love Takes You In. Campus Spotlight: Meet Riesa... “Anime” is Her Passion By Debbie Robertson, HomeNews Writer Thirteenyearold Riesa joined the Peace Cottage family in the spring. She fin ished her last year of middle school at Cypress Point, and she and her classmates are looking forward to their transition to Lee Junior High in August. Riesa likes school. Her favorite subjects are art and gym. Cottage Mom Crissie Cirelli shares, “Riesa is a very gifted artist and she qualifies for the gifted arts class when she returns to school this fall,” which is very exciting to Riesa. She is very soft spoken and a little reserved until she starts talking about art, and then you see her excitement and enthusiasm. “Anime” is the artform that she most enjoys and where she excels. She thinks that when it’s time for college, designing video games and characters is the career field she wants to pursue. It’s evident throughout the con versation that she enjoys every aspect of her video games. In a discussion of other careers that might be a fit with her interests and talents, Riesa agrees that graphic design “might be pretty cool,” too. The conversation turns to the Campus pool, always a favorite summer attraction for the families, and then to the squirrels that play all over the Campus grounds. The Cottage life is good, Riesa says. When she first arrived on the LBCH Campus, she family loves watching the squirrels, which are sort of like family pets, and there are says that her life was suddenly “very different and there were lots of rules.” But she several stories about the various antics and misadventures of the squirrel family. soon adjusted to a more structured schedule as well as new guidelines for her video Riesa adds that having a real pet, maybe a hedgehog, might be a lot of fun. But con games and other activities. She has chores, which include dusting and vacuuming versation is soon back to Reisa’s art and video game characters. As she dreams of the living room and kitchen, keeping her room clean, and occasionally taking out the the characters and the color palettes she has yet to create, it will be exciting to see trash. Mrs. Cirelli confirms, “She does a good job with her chores. She doesn’t always how God uses the canvas of the Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home to help paint a want to do them, but she does a good job.” Riesa’s room is a space she is pretty dili bright future for Reisa. gent about keeping clean and orderly, and she enjoys her time spent there working on projects or just hanging out. She agrees as Mrs. Cirelli shares, “Her room is her refuge. Like most teens, she likes her private time.” Riesa’s current cottage mates are two younger children, ages 4 and 6, who are very active and desiring of attention from Riesa. While the family enjoys a lot of ac tivities together, Mrs. Cirelli tries to schedule oneonone time with Riesa for activ ities more geared to her age and interests. Riesa likes to eat out, and her favorite spots are Dairy Queen and Zaxby’s. Her grandmother is a good cook, too, and Riesa talks about sticky rice as well as the salty and spicy Korean and Asian foods she enjoys when she is with her family. The Cirellis attend First Monroe where Riesa participates in student activities. She is a little nervous but also excited about her week at King’s Camp this summer with her sameage Campus friends. She has a lot of questions about who will be there and what kinds of activities are scheduled. At the moment, she is most excited about the “favorite character day” where all the campers will dress as their favorite super hero and, in her opinion, dressing as her favorite character every day would be even better. Riesa is debating whether she’d rather be the Black Panther or Spi derman. She has to decide soon so she can start packing the necessary items. She and Mrs. Cirelli discuss the different pieces of clothing and accessories that might be needed for each option. Her response to a headband with ears and the addition of a long tail if she chooses Black Panther seem to point toward that as her first choice at the moment. Riesa with her brothers, Romeo and Ryan Project ‘Happy Birthday’ from the Acadiana Homeschool Key Club... Emmalee Horn, secretary of the Acadiana Homeschool Key Club, was the point person for “Project Happy Birthday.” This was a wonderfully creative project that involved the students (and Emmalee’s mom, Laura) selecting birthday presents for our children, along with pro viding cake mixes, icing, candles, gift bags, and gift cards. Emmalee applied for a grant with the national Key Club organization and was selected from among many other appli cants to pursue this project. Their goal for this project was to express their love and care for each child at the Children’s Home and to provide them with a personalized happy birthday from the Acadiana Homeschool Key Club. Marc Eichelberger, VP for Development & Public Relations, along with Scott Bradshaw, Love Cottage Dad, traveled to St. Martinville to meet Emmalee and Laura and pick up the items provided by the Homeschoolers’ project. Emmalee is a high school senior who is setting a great Christlike example for her peers. We are so grateful for her desire to serve the children in our care. She did an excellent job in developing this project and seeing it through to its completion. Thank you Emmalee, Laura, and students for your generous investment in the lives of the children we serve! Dear Friend of Children, Nina* is an adorable eight-year-old who came into our care about eight months ago. She loves her parents, but they are unable to care for her because of their long-term drug abuse. She and her two siblings were living in a shed with a garden hose for running water. Thanks to the generosity of Louisiana Baptists, Nina has her own room in a loving, caring home that’s safe from hurt. Her cottage parents are teaching her the ABCs of sal- vation. Nina is asking lots of questions and learning what it means to trust Jesus as her personal Savior. Because of our partnership in the gospel, you and your church are meeting the needs of neglected, abused, and abandoned children like Nina and sharing the love of our heavenly Father with them. On June 16, Father’s Day, churches across our state will be taking up the 2019 Children’s Home Sunday Annual Offering. What better time to demonstrate God’s heart of compassion for the fatherless than on Father’s Day. Please know how grateful I am for your prayers and support for the children God places in our care! Children’s Recognition Banquet... “We Are His Masterpiece” was the theme for this year’s Children’s Celebraon Banquet held at ULM’s Bayou Pointe. The theme was based on Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things He planned for us long ago.” On this special night, every resident of your Louisiana Bapst Children’s Home was recognized for the masterpieces they are, created by God, with their own unique set of gis and talents. Awards were also given to residents for their special aca demic accomplishments during the 201819 school year. So many of our children worked hard to improve and excel in their school work. We are grateful for every one of them and celebrate their achievements. Three ladies in our Chrisan Women’s Job Corps program were recognized for compleng their HiSET (High School Equiv alency Test) and four were admied to the Adult Educaon Honor Society. These ladies worked extremely hard and we are excited to celebrate their success with them. Two special awards presented this year were the Lucile B. East Award and the Tommy Frost Award. The Lucile B. East Award is named for the wife of former superintendent, Wade B. East. This presgious award is given to a resident who has overcome much adversity and shown great courage. This year’s recipient went to a young man we call “Junior.” We are so proud of Junior and the person he is becoming. The Tommy Frost Award is a fairly new award named in honor of former Coage Life Director, Tommy Frost. This award is given to the resident who not only demonstrates perseverance, but encourages others to persevere as well, even in mes of trial. This year’s recipient is seventeenyearold Jade. Jade has been part of the LBCH family for many years and we could not be more proud of her. It has been a blessing to see her believe and achieve! In addion to the awards, highlights of the event included a musical performance of “I Am God’s Masterpiece” by a group of our children and words of encouragement from Miss Louisiana, Holli Conway. It is such a blessing to see our children shine. We celebrate each wonderful masterpiece entrusted to our care! Special thanks go to former LBCH resident and staff member, Mrs. Effie Bailey, and the Judy Lynn Bailey Endowment Fund for making this special event possible. Irma’s Place Dedication May 21! “Children not only need a pillow for their heads, but for their hearts, and there is no greater pillow for their heart than the redeeming love of Jesus Christ.” Irma Howard paraphrased a thought from Francis Ridley Havergal’s book, Lile Pil lows, during the ribbon cung ceremony for Irma’s Place, the newest HomePlace coage dedicated on May 21. What a wonderful reminder of God’s unfailing love for His children! Mrs. Howard is the namesake for Irma’s Place, the second of three new coages made possible in large part by proceeds from the Brenda Hall Abney Children’s Golf Classic. This annual golf tournament was started fieen years ago by Jonathan and Maggie Marn and is sponsored by the RoyOMarn Company. Irma Howard’s hus band, Gene, is a member of the Marn family. Irma and Gene’s compassion and generosity expressed through their giving to the annual golf tournament have helped make this new coage for homeless children and their mothers possible. Jonathan Marn, Chairman of RoyOMarn, shared Luke 12:48 during the ded icaon of Irma’s Place, “For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required.” This verse is also found on the RoyOMarn corporate website. Maggie Marn gave a brief history of their relaonship with Brenda Hall Abney, a for mer Children’s Home resident who died of cancer in 2005, and how the an nual golf classic got started. The Marns and the RoyOMarn Company have been incredibly generous friends to the Children’s Home. Irma’s Place is a priceless example of how the Marn Family and RoyOMarn are giving back. Irma’s Place is ready to wel come four new families who need a safe refuge and hope for a beer future. These families will have Chrisan staff members to guide them back to a life of independence and share with them the love and hope found only in Jesus Christ. Irma’s Place will be a place they can call home. Thank you to Jonathan and Maggie Marn, Gene and Irma Howard, and the en re RoyOMarn family. Your legacy of compassion and generosity will live on through the many lives impacted by the ministries of LBCH for years to come. PAGE6 • HomeNews - May/June 2019
Highlights from HomePlace... Susan Clark Director of HomePlace Recently I was cleaning out an old trunk at my parent’s home and I came across some of my old albums and records. I know they are no longer called that but the word “vinyl” is not yet a “go to word” in my vocabulary. Rest assured, my children hello do not hesitate to correct me when I date myself. If I had to guess, it is in order to hel avoid embarrassment on their part. FYI, record players are still referred to as record players unless you choose to use the term “turntable.” I came across an oldie but goldie record by the Beatles. “Hello, Goodbye” is on Side A and “I am a Walrus” on Side B. Now if you were to google the lyrics you would probably be amazed at the lack of definition and depth in the content of either song. Back in the 60’s I was not concerned with meanings of songs, just focused on the members of the band, if you know what I mean. lo Although, “Hello, Goodbye” lyrics deal with opposing stances, I can’t help but use the title to represent the nature of HomePlace….the arrivals and the departures of the families that enter and leave out of the doors of each cottage. In Hebrew, it is appropriate to use the word, “Shalom” or “Peace” in a greeting as well as a departure. The word, “Ciao” in Italian is used the same way. “Aloha” in Hawaii is often used for hello and goodbye but technically means love, peace and compassion. While visiting France, “Salut” can be used for either as well. “Hello” to a new mom and her son who were welcomed into our brand new cottage, Irma’s Place. They are the very first family to move in. This mom and her son were reunited after a period of separation. Her son walked in and asked what this place was called. He was told “Irma’s Place.” His first response was “my grandmother and great grandmother’s name was Irma.” This family’s immediate reaction to Irma’s Place was “We’re Home.” It is so exciting to be a part of God’s plan of restoration for their lives. One day this “Hello” will be a “Goodbye” and we will see again the trans formation of another family in the hands of our Mighty God. Please pray for all of our families who come and go at HomePlace. A mom and her two boys said “Goodbye” to HomePlace a few days ago. It was bittersweet. Goodbyes are never easy. I would like to share a little of her testimony in her own words. From the moment we all walk through the gates of the Children’s Home, we are told that all our stories are different but all equally important. In some way, God brings us all to the same place of a new beginning. I’m a single mother of GOODBYE two amazing little boys. My oldest son’s father passed away while I was still pregnant with him. After his birth, I dealt with all kinds of emotion…. Depression, Despair, Lone liness and Defeat. I was given countless medications to “fix” me and it all led to a downward spiral of medication abuse. It was a dark place in my life for almost three years until my younger son was born. I found myself with two precious boys to take care of. My second son’s father abandoned us. Rather than falling back into that dark place again, I stood up and fought. I fought for my life and for the lives of my boys. For five years I battled all kinds of emotions, but through the Holy Spirit that gave me strength, I worked three jobs and supported my family. I was exhausted and broken. I came to HomePlace where I was given so much reassurance of just how much God loved me…. so much that He calls me “Worthy and Accepted” I gained back my selfesteem and the confidence to move forward in my life. I give Him all the glory! The Lord opened doors for me in Monroe working as an Optician. This ex perience recently gave me the opportunity to move into a management position in the same field in Lafayette, where I am originally from. God has brought me home! He has exceeded my expectation of provision and love. He is a good, good Father! Thank you for HomePlace! –Kaitlyn Y E Our desire is that each family experience “Shalom” and “Aloha” moments while living at HomePlace… PEACE, LOVE and COMPASSION. I would like to think the reason B that some languages have the same meaning for Hello and Goodbye is because the D continuation of relationships is how God meant it to be for all of us. As families leave the LBCH campus, we have the hope of seeing them again one day. Numbers 6:24 O 26 speaks of a blessing that is used in many churches as a benediction for closing or departure. “The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face shine on you O and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.” G Welcome Lauren and Dusty! We will miss you Katelyn, Taegon and Blase! HomePlace is a transional living ministry that offers compassionate care to women and their children who are homeless due to difficult life circumstances. The goal of HomePlace is to help families obtain the skills needed to move from dependence and despair to a future of selfsufficiency and hope through Christ. HomeNews - May/June 2019 • PAGE 7
