1:00pm-2:30pm The NLBM opened its doors to the
public in a tiny, one-room office space in 1991 with a
dream of building a permanent facility that would pay
rightful tribute to America’s unsung baseball heroes.
In November of 1997, under the leadership of its late
chairman John “Buck” O’Neil, that dream became a
reality when the NLBM moved into its new 10,000
square-foot home inside a cultural complex known as
the Museums at 18th & Vine.
Since that time, the NLBM has welcomed more
than 2-million visitors and has become one of the
most important cultural institutions in the world for its
work to give voices to a once forgotten chapter of
baseball and American history. In July of 2006, the
NLBM gained National Designation from the United
States Congress earning the distinction of being

Negro Leagues Beisbol
Developed by the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum
in 2014 to honor and explore the connections of
African American baseball history to Hispanic
cultures, communities and countries. This is a deep,
rich history with origins in the late 1800s. The
exhibition features profiles of significant baseball
players, a timeline of American and Hispanic baseball
history, and detailed baseball histories of several
countries.

They Were All Stars
Developed by the NLBM in conjunction with Kansas
City’s hosting of Major League Baseball’s All-Star
Game in 2012, the free-standing exhibit chronicles
Negro League players who became Major League
All-Stars. From Jackie Robinson’s breaking of the
color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 until
1959, when the Boston Red Sox became the last team
to integrate, 20 Negro League players transitioned
into the Majors and became All-Stars. Today, only
seven of that illustrious group of 20 are still alive:
Hank Arron (Indianapolis Clowns), Willie Mays
(Birmingham Black Barons), Ernie Banks (Kansas
City Monarchs), Monte Irvin (Newark Eagles), Don
Newcombe (Newark Eagles), Minnie Minoso (New
York Cubans), and George Altman (Kansas City
Monarchs). The Exhibit showcases rare photos,
biographical sketches and other interesting factoids
designed to give fans a greater understanding of the
immediate impact that Negro Leagues had on Major
League Baseball. (Credit: Excerpts from the Negro Leagues

In September 1856, the steamship Arabia was
carrying over 200 tons of cargo intended for general
stores and homes in 16 mid-western frontier towns
along the Missouri River. The steamer was still fully
loaded when it hit a tree snag and sank just 6 miles
west of Kansas City. Due to erosion, the Missouri
River changer course over time, and the Arabia was
buried underground for over a century—along with
all its precious cargo. Lying 45-feet deep beneath a
Kansas corn field, the Arabia’s payload was protected
from light and oxygen and was thus remarkedly well
preserved before it was discovered and recovered in
July 1987.
In 1991 the Arabia’s cargo was transformed into the Arabia Steamboat Museum showcasing fine
China to carpentry tools to children’s toys to the world’s pickles as well as dozens of guns and knives.
4,000 shoes and boots and all manner of clothing items. With case after case and window after window
displaying these remarkable long-lost treasures, 1856 comes to life in the everyday items recovered.

Strawberry Hill Baking Co. celebrates a proud
Eastern European heritage in the heart of the Midwest.
The roots of the heritage lie in the traditional povitica
(po-va-teet-sa) baked by Croatian and Slovenian
grandmothers for generations. Much more than a pastry,
this special treat was made to share with family and
friends as the ultimate sign of love and respect. Others
know this Eastern European pastry as potica, kolachi,
gubana or bejgli. But you don’t have to learn Croatian
to enjoy this delicious tradition—just call it “povi” for
short.
The story of Strawberry Hill Baking Co. began in
1903 when their family came to Kansas City from
Croatia, bringing along the beloved tradition of povitica.
Grandma Dorothy and Grandma Daisy were reluctant to
reveal the secret family recipe, but Dorothy’s son Harley
finally convinced them that this unique and delicious
tradition should be shared with the world.
Preserving a secret family recipe more than a
century old, Strawberry Hill Baking Co. brings the Old
World povitica to a new generation, along with other
delicious recipes inspired by the same spirit of heartfelt
sharing. All of their pastries and cakes are handmade
with the greatest of care, so whether you’re treating
yourself and your family or putting a smile on the face of
a friend or colleague, generations of love can be tasted in
every bite.

quickly goes from bad to utterly disastrous. With an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead
and actors who trip over everything (including their lines).

New Theatre Restaurant…When it was built in the
1960s, the Glenwood Theatre was the largest and most
elegant lodging facility in Overland Park, Kansas. The
complex included an 817-seat movie auditorium, hailed as
Kansas City’s Luxury Movie Theatre, and an extravagant,
free-standing convention center. By the late 1980s,
developers were interested in converting the Glenwood
Manor into retail space. Overland Park city councilman Andrew
Happer felt the convention center would be an excellent location for a
theatre restaurant and convinced the property’s developers to bring
Richard and Dennis on board.
In 2015, New Theatre Restaurant underwent a multi-million-
dollar makeover adding LED panels and more than 4,000,000 LED
lights to the theatre and LEDs in the lobby that seem to make the walls
move with color. New Theatre Restaurant is the largest and most
successful theatre restaurant facility in the United States, averaging
more than a quarter million in attendance annually, including 25,000
season ticket holders. They produce five shows annually with
Broadway Comedies & Musicals featuring stars from TV, film and
stage. Ambiance?.....you betcha! “The Best Dinner Theatre Operation

An Ordinary Man, His Extraordinary Journey
The list of Harry S. Truman’s difficult and world-shaping decisions is extremely long. Assuming the
presidency in the final months of WW II, he inherited a worldwide catastrophe. Truman shouldered the
burden of leadership in a rudderless world. With courage, integrity, and humility, he vindicated the
American Conviction that an open society can produce leaders equal to any challenge.
The new permanent exhibit, “Harry S. Truman: An Ordinary Man, His Extraordinary Journey”
expands appreciation of his Midwestern farm boy who never went to college, his remarkable rise and
enduring character. Through the biography and achievement of Harry Truman, future generations will come
to understand both the possibilities and the responsibilities of American Citizenship.
