In November of 1997, under the leadership of its late chairman John “Buck” O’Neil, that dream became a reality when the NLBM moved into its new 10,000 square-foot home inside a cultural complex known as the Museums at 18th & Vine. Since that time, the NLBM has welcomed more than 2-million visitors and has become one of the most important cultural institutions in the world for its work to give voices to a once forgotten chapter of baseball and American history. In July of 2006, the NLBM gained National Designation from the United States Congress earning the distinction of being “America’s National Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.” (Credit: Excerpts from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum) Negro Leagues Baseball Museum 1616 East 18th Street Kansas City, MO 64108 Phone: 816-221-1920 Traveling Exhibits Negro Leagues Barnstorming Tour The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum has created unique national traveling exhibitions that offer interesting and entertaining perspectives on the scope and magnitude of the professional Negro Baseball 1

This is a deep, rich history with origins in the late 1800s. The exhibition features profiles of significant baseball players, a timeline of American and Hispanic baseball history, and detailed baseball histories of several countries. (Credit: Excerpts from the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum) They Were All Stars Developed by the NLBM in conjunction with Kansas City’s hosting of Major League Baseball’s All-Star Game in 2012, the free-standing exhibit chronicles Negro League players who became Major League All-Stars. From Jackie Robinson’s breaking of the color barrier with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947 until 1959, when the Boston Red Sox became the last team to integrate, 20 Negro League players transitioned into the Majors and became All-Stars. Today, only seven of that illustrious group of 20 are still alive: Hank Arron (Indianapolis Clowns), Willie Mays (Birmingham Black Barons), Ernie Banks (Kansas City Monarchs), Monte Irvin (Newark Eagles), Don Newcombe (Newark Eagles), Minnie Minoso (New York Cubans), and George Altman (Kansas City Monarchs). The Exhibit showcases rare photos, biographical sketches and other interesting factoids designed to give fans a greater understanding of the immediate impact that Negro Leagues had on Major League Baseball. Arabia Steamboat Museum 400 Grand Boulevard Kansas City, MO 64106 Phone: 816-471-1856 In September 1856, the steamship Arabia was carrying over 200 tons of cargo intended for general stores and homes in 16 mid-western frontier towns along the Missouri River. The steamer was still fully loaded when it hit a tree snag and sank just 6 miles west of Kansas City. Due to erosion, the Missouri River changer course over time, and the Arabia was buried underground for over a century—along with all its precious cargo. Lying 45-feet deep beneath a Kansas corn field, the Arabia’s payload was protected from light and oxygen and was thus remarkedly well preserved before it was discovered and recovered in July 1987. In 1991 the Arabia’s cargo was transformed into the Arabia Steamboat Museum showcasing fine China to carpentry tools to children’s toys to the world’s pickles as well as dozens of guns and knives. 4,000 shoes and boots and all manner of clothing items. The complex included an 817-seat movie auditorium, hailed as Kansas City’s Luxury Movie Theatre, and an extravagant, free-standing convention center. By the late 1980s, developers were interested in converting the Glenwood Manor into retail space. Overland Park city councilman Andrew Happer felt the convention center would be an excellent location for a theatre restaurant and convinced the property’s developers to bring Richard and Dennis on board. In 2015, New Theatre Restaurant underwent a multi-million- dollar makeover adding LED panels and more than 4,000,000 LED lights to the theatre and LEDs in the lobby that seem to make the walls move with color. New Theatre Restaurant is the largest and most successful theatre restaurant facility in the United States, averaging more than a quarter million in attendance annually, including 25,000 season ticket holders.
