The Holiday Season 101 continued from cover Did you know that over 750 million pounds of turkey get consumed in the United States every year during the holidays? While turkey, ham, and stuffing are staples for many Americans, people around the globe have a differ- ent set of taste buds in mind. Japan goes wild for KFC on Christmas; in fact, about 3 million orders are placed. Jelly doughnuts and Hanukkah go hand-in-hand while Ireland basks in their Guinness–sign me up! While many chil- dren in the States leave out milk and cookies for Santa (what a lucky guy!), Norwegians leave a bowl of porridge in the barn for the gnome who protects it. Denmark folks ring in the New Year by shattering dishes and Spaniards attempt to shove 12 grapes in their mouth at midnight for a year of good luck. If you think you’re busy this time of year, think again! While you may be listening to “Jingle Bells” on repeat, UPS is busy delivering over 20 billion cards and pack- ages throughout the season. In fact, it’s no surprise that Christmas shopping is the biggest spending holiday, with shoppers dishing out over a trillion dollars! If you are still crossing people off of your gift list, try to avoid the stores the Saturday before Christmas because that is now the busiest shopping day of the year. Deciding what gifts to give your loved ones can be daunting. You can’t go wrong with homemade desserts, gift cards, or personalized gifts – something that any member of the family would appreciate. For the younger kids: Hatchimals, Fingerlings Untamed Raptors, and Nintendo Switch are all the rage. Gift giving doesn’t have to limit itself to family and friends. Merrily Making Meals 188,237. No, that’s not the number of times “Jingle Bells” will be played on the radio this season (though that’s a good guess). 188,237 is the total number of meals that our efficient kitchen team has cooked up and served for our entire Cantata community over the past year. Wow, that’s a lot of food! This incredibly talented staff is made up of 40 kitchen employees and 10 housekeeping members. They prepare meals for many different groups of people includ- ing: all of our campus residents, employees, guests, internal caterings, Cantata at Home, and even police meals! But how on earth do they keep track of everything, every person, every unique meal? Well, the answer is simple: teamwork. Well, there’s a lot more to it than that, but by utilizing a “Geri Card System,” effective communica- tion is always flowing between Cantata Hospitality and the nursing staff. Whether it’s specific dietary needs or restrictions, they know each resident and client by name, face, and their likes/dislikes. We make sure to stuff every single plate by providing full, tasty meals. We go above and beyond to meet their needs and to ensure their trust in us is sustained.” According to Stephen and the rest of his team, the #1 thing that makes Cantata so different from other communities is the deeper connec- tions and compassion our staff forms with our residents and clients. “You first start out by talking about their meal, then the established relationship grows and the conversations turn to life and family.” Our Executive Chef, Cole, plans out meal menus each week, and the whole department takes steps to ensure our standards are always being improved. They seek out constant feedback from all clients and even set up sched- uled meetings to really get a sense of what is deemed the “favorite dish.” Does home cooked meatloaf, gravy, pota- toes and chicken pot pie sound good to you right now? It sure does for our residents–it’s some of their favorites!
