1. Campaigning ideas Write a letter or email to key local and federal politicians The easiest and simplest action you can take is writing to politicians and candidates. Submitting your request in writing to a politician puts pressure on them to take action, particularly when many similar letters are received. To make it even easier, we have setup a form which automates this process and sends an email on your behalf to a range of key politicians and candidates in just a few clicks! Please spare a few minutes of your time to send your email now. Alternatively, we have prepared draft letters that you can copy or make more personal by customising, and sending to as many contacts as you like. You can choose to make it an open letter using an introduction such as “To politicians and candidates standing in the 2022 federal election”, or personalise it using the information from the contact list provided. There are certain protocols for writing to Members of Parliament, which can be found here. Postal addresses and emails for various politicians and candidates are included in this toolkit. When emailing, please copy in connectwanneroo@wanneroo.wa.gov.au to help us monitor who has been contacted. Alternatively, you may email us directly to let us know. Meet with candidates Face-to-face meetings can often be the best way to share ideas and information on key issues and ensure your request is considered. You can arrange a meeting either in person, over the phone or even online by contacting the office of the people who are seeking to be elected or re-elected to the federal seat. Make use of newsletters, group emails and messaging tools/apps Many resident groups, sports groups and schools send out newsletters or use other messaging technology to share communications. This is a good opportunity to include information relating to the AARC and ask members/parents to consider supporting the City’s call for more funding. The suggested social media posts in this toolkit could be modified to suit. You may also like to consider asking them to download this toolkit or sign a petition (if you choose to coordinate one). Issue a media release Consider issuing a media release on behalf of your resident group, sports group or school to share your group’s position on the matter. Having the broad support of your group and being able to quantify the number of supporters, the impact the AARC will have on your group, and a willingness to be photographed will help make the release more enticing to journalists. Here are some relevant contacts you might like to consider issuing your release to: Yanchep News Online: anita.mcinnes@yanchepnewsonline.com.au PerthNow: news@perthnow.com.au The West: cos@wanews.com.au WA Today: news@watoday.com.au 6PR: news@6pr.com.au ABC: abcradioperth@abc.net.au Channel 7 news: cos@seven.com.au © Campaigning Toolkit | Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre|2022 federal election campaign | City of Wanneroo, Perth, Western Australia. 4
Channel 10 news: eyewitnessperth@ten.com.au Channel 9 news: contact@9news.com.au When emailing, please copy in connectwanneroo@wanneroo.wa.gov.au to help us monitor what media has been contacted. Alternatively, you may email us directly to let us know. Start a petition Petitions legitimately and quantitatively demonstrate public support and could be used to ask the federal government to provide increased funding towards the AARC. Anyone can start a petition, whether you are a resident, representative of a group, or an organisation, and it can be either paper-based or online. Parliament provides specific rules and guidelines on starting a petition and we recommend these are followed to ensure the best chance of success. More information and links to further resources are provided in this toolkit. Share on social media Social media is a great tool to use to reach others with both words and visuals. Additionally, posts can quickly spread like wildfire if the messaging is right. To help you share the message of the campaign online we have prepared some suggested social media posts for you (including images). Posts may be posted on your personal page, but also consider if it is possible to share with any relevant community or sporting group pages, or closed groups that you are part of. Distribute printed material in relevant places In this toolkit are various pieces of campaign material including posters and flyers that you might like to print and distribute to help spread awareness (subject to permission). Consider the suitability of places such as your school, your workplace, local sports club, community noticeboards, community events or even a letterbox drop in your neighbourhood. © Campaigning Toolkit | Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre|2022 federal election campaign | City of Wanneroo, Perth, Western Australia. 5
2. Draft letter to politicians and candidates (individuals) Dear [name of politician/candidate] I am calling on you to pledge your support for a full-featured aquatic and recreation centre in Alkimos, 42km north of the Perth CBD. The Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre (AARC) is in the planning stages and while there is money to complete stage one, with an extra $30 million we can build a facility to meet our community needs now and into the future. I am aware that in 2019 the Federal Government provided $5 million for AARC. However, other aquatic and recreation facilities in Ellenbrook and South Perth attracted federal funding of $25 million and $20 million respectively in that same year. I hope that you can make a similar contribution towards the AARC. Our community needs access to a pool and recreation centre for the following reasons: To provide water safety education to the growing number of children in surrounding areas. To strengthen the development of elite athletes in our community at a competitive level. To support the mental health and well-being of youth and seniors in the area and encourage social connectedness. To help with rehabilitation needs. For general health and fitness for locals. To access anything similar I have to travel to facilities outside of the City in other local government areas, which are typically at least a 20 minute drive away. I support the City of Wanneroo’s call for additional funding of $30 million to deliver the final stage of the Centre. This additional funding will ensure our community does not miss out on critical facilities such as an indoor swim lane pool, indoor hydrotherapy pool, gymnasium and fitness centre, crèche, community facilities, and more. If you would like to see what I am asking for, further information relating to the proposed centre can be found at wanneroo.wa.gov.au/alkimospool. Yours faithfully, [Name] © Campaigning Toolkit | Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre|2022 federal election campaign | City of Wanneroo, Perth, Western Australia. 6
3. Draft letter to politicians and candidates (schools) Dear [name of politician/candidate] Our school and community is calling on you to pledge your support for a full-featured aquatic and recreation centre in Alkimos, 42km north of the Perth CBD. The Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre (AARC) is in the planning stages and while there is money to complete stage one, with an extra $30 million we can build a facility to meet our school and community needs now and into the future. We are aware that in 2019 the Federal Government provided $5 million for AARC. However, other aquatic and recreation facilities in Ellenbrook and South Perth attracted federal funding of $25 million and $20 million respectively in that same year. We hope that you can make a similar contribution towards the AARC. Our City, the City of Wanneroo, is one of the fastest growing cities in the country with some 28 new primary schools and 7 high schools planned in the near future and 3 new ones already under construction. We need access to a pool and recreation centre for students and their families for the following reasons: To provide water safety education. Being a coastal city our students have access to 32km of coastline and need water safety education to be safe in the water. Many of our students come from countries where swimming and water sports are not available, hence the importance of easily accessible water safety education. To strengthen the development of elite athletes in our school and community at a competitive level. To support the mental health and well-being of our youth and encourage social connectedness. For general health and fitness for students and their families. For our school to access anything similar we have to travel to facilities outside of the City in other local government areas, which are typically at least a 20 minute drive away. We are supporting the City of Wanneroo’s call for additional funding of $30 million to deliver the final stage of the Centre. This additional funding will ensure we do not miss out on critical facilities such as an indoor swim lane pool, indoor hydrotherapy pool, gymnasium and fitness centre, crèche, community facilities, and more. 4. Draft letter to politicians and candidates (sports groups) Dear [name of politician/candidate] Our club and sports community is calling on you to pledge your support for a full-featured aquatic and recreation centre in Alkimos, 42km north of the Perth CBD. The Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre (AARC) is in the planning stages and while there is money to complete stage one, with an extra $30 million we can build a facility to meet our community’s needs now and into the future. Our City, the City of Wanneroo, is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. Like many fast growing outer metro councils, we are attracting young families looking for a quality lifestyle. According to the 2016 Census conducted by the Australia Bureau of Statistics, 27.3% of our population is under 18 years old. Access to sporting facilities is becoming a hot topic for cities such as ours across Australia and the City of Wanneroo is no different. Having access to the AARC for our club members will make a huge difference in the following ways: Access to both indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities provides the club and its members with year round training opportunities. The recreational facilities offered at the AARC expand what the club, as a small business, can offer its members. Events as well as club related activities can be held at the facility. Access to the AARC will improve general health and fitness for members, their families and the wider community. For our club to access anything similar we have to travel to facilities outside of the City in other local government areas, which are typically at least a 20 minute drive away. This can put unnecessary strain on working parents and reduce participation in club activities. 5. Draft letter to politicians and candidates (community groups) Dear [name of politician/candidate] Our community group was set up in [insert date] and we have [insert number] members. We are calling on you to pledge your support for a full-featured aquatic and recreation centre in Alkimos, 42km north of the Perth CBD. The Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre (AARC) is in the planning stages and while there is money to complete stage one, with an extra $30 million we can build a facility to meet our community’s needs now and into the future. Access to sporting facilities is becoming a hot topic for cities such as ours across Australia and Wanneroo is no different. Having access to the AARC for our community and members will make a huge difference in the following ways: It will improve the general health and fitness of families and the wider community. It will enable young children to learn to swim in a safe environment. It will reduce the distance needed to travel, which assists our members directly (especially our older members and those with a disability), but also has environmental benefits. It will support mental health and encourage social connectedness. For our group to access anything similar we have to travel to facilities outside of the City in other local government areas, which are typically at least a 20 minute drive away. This can put unnecessary strain on working parents and those with limited transportation options, and reduce participation in our activities. 7. Start or join a petition For a petition to be presented to the Parliament, it needs to follow certain rules and guidelines. These can be different depending on whether you are conducting a paper-based or online petition and whether you plan on petitioning the House of Representatives or the Senate. Before getting started, some of the key questions to consider include: Who will set up the petition and be the formal petitioner? This person must meet certain requirements. Be clear on what you are asking for and make the request clear and concise at the top of the petition. Make sure those signing the petition are clear on what details are required for the petition to be sent to Parliament. Identify whether you will be petitioning the Senate or the House of Representatives. Decide if you want a paper-based petition or an e-petition Information about setting up petitions, the rules and guidelines, and frequently asked questions are all available on the Parliament House website. © Campaigning Toolkit | Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre|2022 federal election campaign | City of Wanneroo, Perth, Western Australia. 18
8. Draft social media posts Below are some suggested posts suited to different types of senders that you are welcome to use as is or customise if preferred. We have also provided images to download and use to accompany the post text. We encourage you to use the hashtag #letsallpooltogether when sharing anything on social media. This groups all related content together from the community, helping to track and demonstrate public support for the project. Individuals As a local, I’m excited to see progress on the development of the Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre! However, I’ve learned it is $30 million short in funding. Without this funding, we will only have limited facilities and will miss out on an indoor swim lane pool, hydrotherapy pool, fitness centre, crèche, and more. If you’re like me and would like to see all these facilities included and have a centre that caters to our growing population, we need to ACT NOW before the federal election. Please take 5 minutes to fill in a form to register your support and help the City of Wanneroo attract the funding needed - wanneroo.wa.gov.au/alkimospool #letsallpooltogether Schools Have you heard? The Alkimos Aquatic and Recreation Centre is in the planning phases but there is a $30 million funding shortfall. Without the funding, the facilities on offer will be limited. A full-featured centre in close proximity to our school is important. Aside from the obvious advantage of reduced travel time, a facility like this will provide our students with opportunities for water safety education, strengthen the development of up-and-coming elite athletes within our school and community, and help support the physical and mental wellbeing of our young people. As a school, we support the City of Wanneroo’s call for additional funding.
