1     Introduction

1.1   BACKGROUND
      Established in 2015, the Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue at the University of Ottawa is a
      platform that aims to enrich and broaden public debate in Canada.

      The Forum brings speakers and guests with a wide range of perspectives and ideas to
      campus to participate in public events such as conferences and panel discussions, and in
      more targeted engagements such as seminars and workshops related to contemporary
      research on substantive public policy challenges facing Canada and the world.

1.2   OBJECTIVE
      The objective of this call for proposals (CFP) is to create an opportunity for
      University of Ottawa faculty members from any discipline to participate in the
      Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue initiative.

1.3   AVAILABLE BUDGET
      The total budget for the fall 2018 CPF is $ 150K CAD.

2           Guidelines

2.1         ELIGIBILITY
            The following University of Ottawa members are eligible to submit proposals:
            - Full-time faculty members;
            - Part-time faculty members;
            - Post-graduate students;
            - Graduate students1.

2.2         USE OF FUNDS
            Funds may only be used to cover the following types of expenses:
            - Event costs (including but not limited to facilities rentals, catering services, marketing,
               etc.2);
            - Speaker honorarium;
            - Travel and accommodation (e.g. ground and air travel, hotel, per diem food and
               incidentals3);
            - Administrative support: Up to 20% of the grant total can be put towards planning and
               coordination services.

2.3         SUBMISSION PERIOD
            The submission period for applications opens October 15, 2018, 9:00 hours (9 AM) EDT.

            The submission period for applications closes November 2, 2018, 17:00 hours (5 PM) EDT.

            Please note that applications submitted outside of the above-specified submission period
            will not be admissible for this CFP. Applications will not be retained for future CFPs.

2.4         SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION
            -    Open/download the application form, which can be found on the Alex Trebek Forum
                 for Dialogue homepage (https://www.uottawa.ca/forum-for-dialogue/).

will assume complete oversight of and full responsibility for the use of funds.

    All event-related expenses must adhere to University of Ottawa policies.

      -   Complete the application form.
      -   Save the application form as a PDF and send the file to the Office of the Vice-
          President, External Relations (vrreluni@uottawa.ca).

2.5   APPLICATION PARAMETERS

      Applications must be drafted in either French or English.

      Applications may not exceed 2,000 words, excluding literature references and budget but
      including footnotes and text in figures, with the research/theme description not exceeding
      1,500 words and the event description not exceeding 500 words.

2.6   CONDITIONS ON GRANTING

      The event must be held within one year after being awarded a grant. Should this not occur,
      the University of Ottawa may retract the awarded grant. The University of Ottawa will
      evaluate the results of the funded event using the proposal’s expected output as listed in
      the application.

      2.6.1. Post-event report
      The post-event report must be submitted within a maximum of 3 months after the event.
      This report will be comprised of the following sections:
      - Event summary, including but not limited to information on speaker(s), audience
          demographics, and general event statistics.
      - Budget breakdown, including proof of adherence to (a) the use of funds conditions
          outlined in section 2.2 of this CFP and, (b) University of Ottawa policies.
      - Outcome, including an explanation of the knowledge exchange and impact resulting
          from the event.

3     Assessment procedure

3.1   PROCEDURE
         Committee assessment
         Admissible applications will be forwarded to the members of the Alex Trebek Forum
         for Dialogue Selection Committee for assessment. The committee will assess the
         applications comparatively and rank the applications based on the criteria for
         proposals as stated in this CFP.

         The committee will make a decision regarding allocation or rejection of funding, and
         applicants will be duly informed.

      3.1.1. Selection committee
         Composition of the committee
         The Alex Trebek Forum for Dialogue Selection Committee is chaired by the President
         and Vice-Chancellor Jacques Frémont.

         Selected based on their faculty affiliation and research experience, committee
         members are invited by the Chair to serve for a period of two (2) years.

      3.1.2 Schedule
             November 2, 2018       Submission Deadline
             January 7, 2019        Announcement of results to applicants
             January 6, 2020        Deadline for use of funds

3.2   CRITERIA
      The criteria for this CFP is organized into 2 categories, mandatory and optional. It follows
      that applicants must clearly state how their proposal fulfills the mandatory criteria.
      Applicants are strongly encouraged to take notice of the optional criteria, as these may
      play a determining factor in the ranking of applications during the assessment process, and
      ultimately, the granting of funds.

      3.2.1 Mandatory criteria

      - Enrich and broaden public debate, in Canada or around the world, on issues related
        to public policy and challenges facing Canada and the world.
      - Involve University of Ottawa students.

3.2.2 Optional criteria
- International component;
- Innovation;
- Capitalize on uOttawa’s strengths and our convening power as a non-partisan
  institution of higher learning;
- Involve partners from the federal government, the United Nations, the private sector
  and/or the non-profit sector;
- Interdisciplinarity – involve two or more faculties;
- Reflect the diversity of Canadian society;
- Offer thought leadership.
