FALL 2018 The 2018-19 school year has begun! At George Fox, we look forward to getting to know our new students and welcoming back those returning. Nikolai Gogol’s classic comedy, written in 1836, that mobilizes Christians to advance the common good in society. Q Ideas exposes humanity’s quest for power, wealth and prestige with a keen eye in represents the perspective of a new generation of Christians. He speaks on this hysterical and timely farce. (Mature themes and content) cultural issues where faith intersects public life. Oct. 5-6 Homecoming Weekend Oct. 28 Organ Hymn Festival Homecoming is a time to welcome back alumni and the George Fox 6 p.m. Bauman Auditorium community to the Newberg campus as we celebrate our time spent here Come worship with us and sing favorite hymns of the Christian faith with and our connection to the university. This year, we’ll bring people together brilliant accompaniment from George Fox University resident organist Dan through class reunions, an alumni plaza dedication event, a Classic Bruin Miller. This concert will also feature George Fox student and community dinner, athletic events and performances by students. musicians as we celebrate with beloved and familiar hymns. Music Nov. 3 Fall Jazz Concert 7:30-9 p.m. Bauman Auditorium The Jazz Ensemble is the university’s premier jazz performance group. In the past several years, they’ve performed with jazz luminaries John Clayton, Dave Pietro and Matt Wilson, and at venues such as Jimmy Mak’s in Portland and the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. This year’s Fall Jazz Concert will feature classic swing tunes as well as contemporary arrangements for jazz band, showcasing outstanding student soloists. Come out and swing with us! Nov. 8 Fall Chamber Concert 7:30-9 p.m. Bauman Auditorium This concert will feature music for small groups, including Chamber Singers, Women’s Chorale, and Chamber String Orchestra. The program is varied and includes music from Renaissance to Contemporary. The concert features the university’s Concert 7:30 p.m. Bauman Auditorium Choir, Master Chorus, and Symphony Orchestra. Visual EVERY MONDAY ART TALK 6-7 p.m. Chehalem Cultural Center Art Art Talk is a free, visiting artist series run in collaboration between George Fox University’s Department of Art and Design and the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg. Every Monday evening at 6 p.m., an artist or designer joins us for a presentation and brief Q&A at the Cultural Center. The program introduces students and community members to engaging voices, creative concepts and critical thinking surrounding art and design. Every talk is free and open to the public. Harriet Isom was a career foreign service officer from 1961 to Dec. 3 Maya Vivas Studio Art 1996, assigned to embassies in Asia and Africa. During her last decade in the Dec. 10 Students Studio Art Foreign Service, she served as U.S. ambassador to Laos, Benin and Cameroon. She grew up on her family ranch near Pendleton, Oregon. Dec. 10-14 Eden Wiegand - Senior Thesis Exhibit Minthorne Gallery There will be an opening reception on Monday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m. Eden Wiegand presents her senior thesis exhibition, an investigation of animal portraiture and agrarian subject matter. Expressive and inventive color suggest playful and fanciful narrative in this exciting work. Born in Oklahoma, Eden’s roots in a military family led her to embrace culture, place and location. She believes art should reflect the beauty and joy found in life. Eden is inspired by the Southwestern culture, humor and narrative. She has exhibited in local and regional art shows and has worked on commissions. 10 11
