Student artists from Claremont Graduate University attended March 22, 2018 a reception Wednesday night for City Hall’s temporary art exhibit. CITY NEWS City Council Meeting - March 27, 2018 The City Council will meet for its regular meeting on March 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chamber. There will be a Special Closed Session prior to the meeting at 5:15 p.m. The Council agenda is posted on the City website, at City facilities, and at the Claremont Library, the Thursday evening before the meeting. Claremont Library Temporary Closure The Claremont Library will close for renovations beginning Monday, April 16. The library is closing for renovations to the public restrooms, adult area, circulation area, and for the installation of a new HVAC system and a new gender-neutral/family restroom. Drought-tolerant landscaping will also be installed, and the parking lot will be resurfaced. While the Claremont branch building is closed, customers can visit nearby La Verne or San Dimas for full L.A. County Library services. Claremont customers can also request to pick up holds, return materials, and browse a small circulating collection at the temporary library site in the Settlers Room at the Alexander Hughes Center (1700 Danbury Road). The temporary library location will open on Tuesday, April 17, and will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays. The library renovations are expected to take six months. PUBLIC SAFETY Baker to Vegas Law Enforcement Relay The Claremont Police Department teamed up with the Azusa and Covina Police Departments to participate in the Baker to Vegas Law Enforcement Challenge Relay Race last weekend, earning a 4th place finish in their division! This Baker to Vegas team graciously dedicated their race efforts to Pomona Police Officer Greggory Casillas, recently killed in the line of duty. In a show of support and solidarity, each runner wore a head/arm band labeled Pomona PD and clearly displaying Greg’s badge number 16. The team finished with a time of 16 hours and 5 minutes. Baker to Vegas is the world’s most prestigious and unique law enforcement foot race. The race covers 120 miles, broken down into 20 legs through the desert and mountains between the cities of Baker, California and Las Vegas, Nevada. Congratulations to everyone who participated in this year’s Baker to Vegas event!
School Safety Community Forum In their ongoing commitment to student and community safety, the Claremont Unified School District and the Claremont Police Department are hosting a community forum on school safety. The forum will be held on Monday, March 26 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of El Roble Intermediate School (665 N. Mountain Avenue). This presentation is intended for an adult audience as the content is not suitable for children. PLANNING Demolition of Building at the Old School House Property On Monday, April 2, construction crews will begin demolition of the vacant three-story hotel building located north of Buca di Beppo and west of the Candlelight Pavilion. The contractor estimates the demolition to take four weeks. A 30-unit, three-story condominium building and a two-level parking garage will be built at the site. The project was approved by the Architectural Commission on July 26, 2017, and will serve as a centerpiece of the Old School House (OSH) Specific Plan area. Renderings for the condo project are shown below. Previous developments under the OSH Specific Plan included renovation of the DoubleTree Hotel, renovation of the OSH retail and office complex, and construction of a new retail building that includes Trader Joe’s Market. The property owner is currently finalizing the condo construction plans. The public will be notified once the building permit is issued and construction is scheduled to begin.
CONSTRUCTION UPDATES Golden State Water Main Line Installation – Harwood Avenue Golden State Water will continue installation of a new water main line on Harwood Avenue (between Mills Avenue to Brooks Avenue) next week. Work is expected to be completed by the week of April 9. Golden State Water will notify any residents affected by the construction, including water disruptions. Telecommunications Installation – Mills Avenue On Monday, March 26, crews will begin the final phase of work on a telecommunication service line at the intersection of Mills Avenue and Foothill Boulevard. This phase will include re-paving the portions of Mills Avenue and Foothill Boulevard that were affected by the service line installation. This work is expected to be completed by Thursday, March 29. Telecommunication Conduit Installation – Base Line Road On Monday, March 26, crews will begin work on the installation of telecommunication conduit on Base Line Road, between Villa Maria Road and Oxford Avenue. This project’s traffic control will require that eastbound and westbound Base Line Road be reduced to one lane. It is anticipated that this work will be completed within five days. During construction, drivers and pedestrians are directed to follow the appropriate construction signs and remember to share the road with bicyclists. COMMUNITY IMPROVEMENT Outdoor Lighting Restrictions The City reminds residents and business owners to be respectful of neighbors with regard to exterior outdoor lighting and glare. Outdoor light fixtures must be shielded and directed downward so that the light source is not visible from neighboring properties. Multi-directional yard lights are strictly prohibited. COMMUNITY SERVICES Arbor Day The City hosted the Arbor Day Celebration on Saturday, March 10 at Blaisdell Park. The program included a proclamation, poster contest, vendor booths, and volunteer plantings. With the help of over 150 amazing volunteers, more than a hundred trees were planted within Blaisdell Park and the surrounding neighborhoods. Community Services would like to thank the following businesses for their contributions: Pixie Donuts, Subway, and Yum-Yum Donuts. A special thank you to all the Claremont Unified School District Students that participated in the poster contest: Grace Ayala, Brooke Barraza (2nd Place), Summer Calimlim (1st Place), Kayley Chambers-Swanson, Annika Graham-Scanlon (3rd Place), Audrey Koch, Lukas Negrete, Nina Olson, Winter Smith, and Zoe Toney.
College Park Lighting Project This month, the City will begin installing new park lights at College Park. The College Park Lighting Project will include adding 29 LED park lights and 10 building mounted fixtures. The lights will serve both parking lots and the pedestrian walkways. The lighting design was reviewed with neighbors and youth sports groups at a community meeting. The design was also reviewed and approved by the Parks, Hillsides, and Utilities Committee, the Community and Human Services Commission, and the City Council. Construction is anticipated to take 60 days, with an estimated completion date in late April. Staff will coordinate with the contractor and Little League to ensure that youth sports groups have safe and reasonable access to the fields, parking lots, and restrooms during the construction period. Community Forestry Outreach Meetings The City invites community members to provide their input on the future of Claremont’s Urban Forest. The City has received a grant to develop an Urban Forest Management Plan and is hosting two community outreach meetings to develop that plan. The plan will guide the procedures, maintenance, and planting of the City’s trees as well as outline public outreach goals for educating residents on tree care. Community members are invited to attend either of the following meetings: Wednesday, March 28 Blaisdell Park – Community Building (440 S. RECREATION, SPECIAL EVENTS & ACTIVITIES Spring Celebration – Saturday, March 31 Children can hunt for eggs and take photos with Mr. and Mrs. Bunny at the annual Spring Celebration on Saturday, March 31 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Memorial Park. The egg hunt for children ages 3-12 will begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. with an opportunity to find the golden egg. Free goodie bags will be available for children ages 2 and younger. Other activities include a live petting zoo, face painting, a magic show, balloon art, interactive booths, photo opportunities with Mr. and Mrs. Bunny, and a musical petting zoo provided by the Claremont Community School of Music. The Kiwanis Club of Claremont will also be hosting a pancake breakfast for $5 per person from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The City of Claremont is pleased to welcome John Elway’s Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM as this year’s event sponsor. Happiness Sprinkling Youth Services staff invites Claremont students to be a part of the City’s 2nd Annual “Happiness Sprinkling” on Friday, March 23 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Students will create and hold uplifting signs near both the TAC and the YAC to spread positivity. Wear bright yellow and join us to spread the cheer. National Pickleball Month Join one of America’s fastest growing sports! Pickleball is a fun, active, social paddle sport for all ages and skill levels and participation in the game is exploding throughout the country! Find out what all the excitement is about during the month of April. Claremont Pickleball offers free instruction and games on the roller hockey rink at Wheeler Park (626 Vista Drive) on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 12 noon, and on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Instruction and loaner equipment is available. Fourth of July Celebration Update Festival Food Booths Non-profit organizations looking for a fundraiser may submit a food booth application for the Fourth of July Festival. The festival takes place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park. Food booths are an excellent way to raise funds for your organization while participating in a fun Claremont tradition. The booth fee is $125 and the deadline to turn in the application is Monday April 2. Fourth of July Sponsorship The City of Claremont’s Independence Day Committee invites you to consider promoting your organization to over 35,000 people as a sponsor of the 70th Annual Fourth of July Celebration. Whether you choose to be a $5,000 Presenting Sponsor or a $500 Ticket Sponsor, your sponsorship is an opportunity to be a part of a Claremont tradition. RECREATION CLASSES The City offers a range of classes and activities for children and adults. Students will make a solid, liquid, and flubber slime to experiment with and take home. This one-day workshop will be held at the Hughes Center Wednesday, April 4, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Class fee is $10, plus a $4 materials fee. Registration deadline is Tuesday, April 3. Kids Aerial Circus Camp (Ages 6 – 12) Hoop and trapeze your way into this amazing one-week camp! Camp will be held at the Circus Studio (548 W. First Street) Monday, April 2 through Friday, April 6 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Camp fee is $160. Shoes and socks are not required. Registration deadline is Sunday, April 1. Participants can set a lifetime foundation of good behavior and communication for their dogs through increasing the dog’s predictability, consistency, and obedience to commands. Classes will be held at the Lewis Park Basketball Courts outside of the Alexander Hughes Community Center, March 26 through May 7, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Class fee is $150. YAC & TAC ACTIVITIES The City offers supervised activities for teens in middle school and high school at the YAC and TAC Activity Centers. Melted Crayon Art – Monday, March 26 On Monday, March 26 at 3:30 p.m., get your creative juices flowing at the TAC while creating your own melted crayon creation. Safe Dates Workshop Series – Tuesday, March 27 Project Sister will teach attendees crucial skills for building healthy relationships and preventing dating abuse. This final installment of the 9-week workshop series will be held from 3:15 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. Pizza will be served. Transportation for TAC participants with a signed permission will be provided via Dial-A-Ride. Not in Our Town – Thursday, March 29 “Not in Our Town” tells the story of a Manhattan Beach family who were victims of a hate crime. After the screening of the short film, join us for a brave, student-led conversation to discuss current events and issues, while creating an action plan for sustainable reform, a fight for justice, and self-care within our community. The event, presented by the City of Claremont’s Teen Committee and Committee on Human Relations, will be held at Taylor Hall (1775 N. Indian Hill Boulevard) from 3:45 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Scam Stopper Breakfast On Wednesday, March 28, learn how to stop scams in their tracks! A panel of experts will provide information about how you can protect yourself from fraud related to home repair, finances, identity theft, auto repair, and more. Breakfast will be served at 8:30 a.m., and the event will begin at 9:00 a.m. This event is free and pre-registration is required. Location: Joslyn Center. Lunch at Blaisdell and Joslyn This spring, visit the centers for socializing, music, and lunch Monday through Friday. Lunch is served at noon at the Blaisdell Center and at 11:30 a.m. at the Joslyn Center. Suggested donation for adults 60 and over is $2. This program is funded by the Los Angeles County Area Agency on Aging. Improvisational Comedy Discover your potential to be funny in a warm and supportive environment! During this fun and exciting activity, participants will learn the fundamentals of character, plot, and environment. This class is for both beginning and experienced comics and will culminate with a show. Drop by the Joslyn Center on Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. to join in on the fun.
