31-YEAR LOTTERY SELLER RED’S AUTO & BAIT 31 years ago there was no question regarding selling lottery, recalls Pam Sitzman of Red’s Auto & Bait. “It was the new big thing—there was a lot of buzz around it—we had to get in on it.” Red’s was a very small business in 1990. Sitzman, her husband Red, and two employees operated the service station with two hoists and full-service gas pumps. They also sold a few snacks in addition to bait and tackle, and lottery. Sitzman says the old scratch ticket dispensers that were tucked under the counter and the procedures for redeeming tickets now seem “ancient.” Nothing was online. Red’s tracked everything by hand. Sitzman is most grateful for SmartCount. Red’s has sold a $50,000 Gopher 5 winner and a $30,000 winning scratch ticket, but Sitzman most She also recalls that occasionally their lottery sales vividly remembers when a regular player called rep would set up a table outdoors so players could her at home late at night “squealing like crazy” that buy a ticket and spin a wheel for a lottery T-shirt or she’d won $25,000. She told the player to write her other promo item along with a prize from Red’s. name on the ticket, put it in a secure spot, sleep on People waited in line to play. It was a lot of fun. it, and stop by in the morning. The player was still squealing (and sleep-deprived) the next day when Red’s opened and checked the bar code. In 1998 the state mandated that underground gas tanks be upgraded, so with a complete raze and rebuild Red’s added a third hoist, a car wash, and a C-store with food service, while still selling bait and tackle, and of course, lottery. These days Red’s has 38 employees, some of whom cook daily deli specials on the premises, which have become a big draw. Located 30 miles south of Brainerd and right on Highway 25 in Pierz, Red’s serves steady traffic year-round and welcomes plenty of summer lake traffic. Though it’s not the only C-store in the area, Red’s has plenty of regular lottery players. Their secret to lottery success? Red’s has eye- popping lottery signage out front. Inside, lottery materials and promos are positioned between the two registers so customers can’t miss the opportunity to play. “We go with the flow of whatever the lottery brings on,” Sitzman says. She thinks lottery advertising also factors into Red’s success. “We just need to ask for every sale.”
