The BushTelegraph October 2019 The Green Issue The quarterly newsletter of The Bushwood Area Residents’ Association THE GREEN ISSUE Waste is an emotive subject with language and opinions to match. From fly-tipping to street cleaning, missed refuse collections to bugs in food bins, we all have strong views – and often express them in equally pungent language. Yet so often the terms we use are inaccurate and our knowledge limited. How many of us talk of going to ‘the tip’ when we mean the recycling centre? Or assuming that ‘black bag’ waste is destined only for landfill? In this special issue of the Bush Telegraph, we delve into the sometimes stinky world of waste management and its fragrant but confusing cousin, recycling. 6 October 2019 The Bush Telegraph BUSHWOOD SUMMER A busy summer in Bushwood was kicked off with the BARA 40th anniversary celebrations at Henry Reynolds Gardens. Music, games, food and fun for all ages in a free event organised by BARA. Hopefully you were among the hundreds of residents who were able to join us in Henry Reynolds Gardens on 23rd June to celebrate June 21st Party at HRG the 40th anniversary of BARA. We were blessed with glorious weather and this added to the occasion as we all enjoyed the attrac- tions, activities, entertainment, food and drink on offer. The kids were able to win sweets in the stick lotto and fish-a-duck games, and then let out that sugar rush on the bouncy castle. Elsewhere, there were stands for archery, St John’s Ambulance, Bara merchandise (not yet got your BARA mug and tote bag?, then see our website www.bara.london) and the Safer Neighbourhood Team to explore. There was even a Recycling Lorry for kids to pretend to operate. As if that wasn’t enough we were treated to a diverse array of local musical talent playing on a stage set up on the basketball area. News of the show had obviously spread far and wide as our wonderful neighbourhood artists were even joined on stage by popular comedic poet John Hegley to round off proceedings ably ac- companied by Leybourne Road’s own Eleanor Moreton. The BARA Committee are grateful to the many volunteers who combined efforts on the day to make it such an enjoyable occasion. Bushwood also played host to the yearly Yard Sale organised by Barfield’s Jake Green. Streets were lined with bunting and all kinds of wonderful things to buy. This year BARA joined in by hosting a communal selling area supplying tables for people without a front garden or an area to sell. The summer closed out with the International Car Free day and Bushwood was very much involved. Several streets closed and were turned into ‘play streets’ where neighbours and families used their closed roads to set up marquees and seating and hold street parties and play games.
