© The Burren Perfumery © The Burren Perfumery Workshops in Wild Places REWILD YOUR ART THROUGH WORDS AND IMAGES IN... Burren, Ireland April 21 – 30, 2022 What does the rocky landscape of the Burren have to teach you about yourself and your painting? The author Robert Macfarlane wonders: if we can only have certain understandings or think certain thoughts in a particular landscape, then, what does this landscape want you to know and how can it help you let your ideas fly free? The Burren—the Irish word “boireann” means “great rock.” The last ice age scraped the surface clear of soil and there are few trees to produce leaves which decay to form soil. These plateaus are enormous “table rocks” fractured by geologic forces but they provide a home to 75 percent of Ireland’s flower species. The Burren is a designated Protected Area, and UNESCO recognized Global Geopark. Designed for intermediate to advanced artists, this class aims to inject more of the spirit of nature into your work. We begin with a 2-day writing workshop with Paul Kingsnorth, award-winning poet, and novelist. The creative exercises given by Paul and Janice are designed to help you reconnect with that forgotten wild part of yourself. During the 2-day creative writing class, you’ll be encouraged to respond not only with words, but with small quick, gestural paintings to explore your response to the wildness within. Following the writing part of the course, we’ll carry forward with 5-days of painting with Janice Mason Steeves from the inspiration of the land. Besides breaking open your creativity through painting and writing, we’ll also explore some of the incredible landscape of County Clare. We’ll have a daylong tour of the Burren with local Anthropologist/Citizen Archaeologist Mary Quinlan, stopping for lunch at the TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS BY Tea Room in the beautiful Burren Perfumery. Another morning we’ll take a break from the studio to see the majestic Cliffs of Moher. Rising 214m above the Atlantic, they are a special protected area and home to over 20 species of birds. Following this visit, we’ll circle over to Lahinch for a Wild Kitchen walk (and perhaps a picnic) to forage for edible seaweeds. All in all, it will be an incredibly creative journey into this unique and rugged area inspiring us, opening our wild hearts and turning our words into paintings.
