Bulletin Friday 5 June 2020 Message from the Head of School for Families It has been very pleasing participating in and reading feedback from colleagues about the live Year 10 lessons this week. This is new to all of us but I have seen students and staff grow in confidence this week. If you are still feeling uncomfortable about embracing the new way of learning then don’t forget that you can access the lessons with microphone and camera off, meaning you can simply watch Mr R Battle Head of School and listen to your teachers. As times keep changing around us please remember that you can keep in touch with your teachers, tutors and pastoral team through the Google Classroom. In school, non teaching staff are working very hard to prepare everyone for when the Government does signal a return to school. Looking ahead to next week I would like to draw your attention to World Ocean Day for schools on Monday 8th June. There is an interactive line up of ocean advocates ready with live ocean films, science lessons, performances, yoga and much more bringing the wonder of the ocean from the deep blue to wherever you are.You can find more details at https://worldoceanday.school/ Take care, Mr R Battle, Head of School

Miles for Mind I wanted to say thank you to everyone that joined in with this challenge over the past month. I used my last run to go out and use Strava to create the word “thanks” in my run, I realised it is much harder than it looks and the three miles that I needed to run to complete the challenge turned into a five mile run and this being my third attempt at spelling out the word so it was legible! What started out as a group choosing to run for the month, with a WhatsApp group to keep us all updated, ended with pictures of families, pizza ovens, fancy drinks and lots of friendly chatter. It showed me that the team at Saxmundham really are a community and I hope that this challenge helped everyone else who took part as much as it did me. I believe we really did cover the 6Cs over the course of the month, although we have postponed the real celebration for a time when we can all get together and celebrate what we took part in. I am also aware that there are other colleagues that have just begun their running journey and I wanted to congratulate them on taking those first steps to complete couch to 5k, there is something about running and the community it creates, so good luck and enjoy the process as you begin to find that enjoyment of running and I hope we can all run together soon. If any students living in Saxmundham would like to join the school’s running club it is on Thursdays at 4.15-5.00pm. The coaches are Chris and Marion from the Saxon Running Club. Miss Coles, Pastoral Assistant Mrs Thompson runs in Mrs Bevan. the lovely countryside using her new trainers for the first time! She Mrs Costello heading out completed 50m! for her last run of the month. Mr Friston completed 100 miles and made some friends on his run around Easton. Having only been at the school for six months, this challenge made him feel part of the team while working from home.

Pupils were set a live brief to design an entertaining area in my garden. A fire pit, seating and lighting were required with consideration into sustainability and recycled materials. Pupils were encouraged to be creative and display their work in a variety of different ways. I’m sure you will agree that these designs are fantastic and I will be using many of the ideas presented. Year 10 - AQA Design and Technology GCSE Information The Contextual Challenges have been released by AQA You will undertake a single 'design and make' activity, which will arise from investigating 'one' of the three contextual challenges; 1) Multifunctional living 2) Teenage lifestyle 3) Nature and the environment You will produce a mind map considering your thought processes based on your favoured contextual challenge. From this, you will be able to think of a problem and during your coursework you will 'design and make' the solution. Mind maps There are many different ways to present your thoughts. I have included some examples that you may consider.
HOW DESIGN CAN SOLVE PROBLEMS When you look at the contextual challenges, it can be difficult getting started and considering what design problems to solve. These tables below list the ways that design can solve problems and may help in analysing the contextual challenges. THINGS YOU… HOW WE… WHY WE NEED DESIGN… Carry Live To improve lives Hold Entertain To save lives Wear Work To comfort Sit on Relax To promote Stand on Sleep To entertain Sleep on Travel To be fun Walk on Play To look good Use Eat/drink To make safe Look at Educate To educate Listen to Wash To relax SAVING… PROTECTING… INCREASING… BEING or HELPING USING… Space Lives Convenience Multipurpose Disabled or minority Resources Nature Security Recyclable Poor Energy Vulnerable Ease of living New technology Sick people Water From pain Profitability Foldaway Animals Lives From weather Happiness Smart materials The environment Time From disease Relaxation Simplified The world Nature From harm Safety Repurposing Children
