Mark the date: February 16, 2018. On this day, the eleventh animal in the Chinese
zodiac, the Dog, takes over as the ruling animal of the year. There will be celebrations
and not just in Chinese communities in many Asian countries. The tradition has
clearly earned recognition in many places all over the world.
But will the Dog fulfill its role as man’s best friend and give hope of good fortune
and peace of mind, if not prosperity for us, in 2018?
Remember that the dominant element of the sign of the Dog is Earth. This indicates a certain stability through the
entire year, which should allow those who have the Earth element in their chart to organize their personal and
professional life more confidently and efficiently. The chart of the year also shows Fire and Metal as secondary
elements. In fengshui ideology, Fire produces Earth, because Fire burns and creates ash or Earth. Earth produces
Metal, because metal is mined from the Earth. This productive cycle of elements indicates that wealth can come to
those who work honestly and fairly.
However, those who have too much Water and Wood elements in their charts could expect some dips and fluctuations
in luck during the year. This is due to the cycle of Earth destroying Water when it absorbs water when it rains, in the
same manner that Wood weakens Earth when it absorbs all minerals and leaves the Earth barren.
We, at Frigga Charmed Life, spend countless hours and long days each year charting these details to help us come up
with suggestions to help you face every Chinese New Year with confidence. We wish to thank all of you who have

Have you ever wondered why the Chinese zodiac signs are strictly in the following order:
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Boar
Here’s one popular story.
In the past, there was no Chinese zodiac. The Jade Emperor wanted to choose 12 animals to be his guards. He
therefore sent one of his trusted people to the land of mortals to spread his wish, along with this rule: the earliest
to arrive at the Heavenly Gates for his birthday party will enjoy better ranking among his chosen guards.
Among the early risers were the Rat and the Ox. On his way to the Heavenly Gates, the Rat had to stop to avoid
being carried away by the swift current of a river. The Ox then appeared, and when he was about to cross the
river, the Rat jumped onto his back. Having braved the current, the Ox raced toward the Jade Emperor’s palace.
The Rat, however, jumped out of his back and got to the feet of the Emperor first, followed by the Ox.
Thus, the quick-thinking RAT ranked first, and the hardworking and efficient OX ranked second.
They were followed by the fast and competitive TIGER who got the third place, and the equally swift RABBIT who
hopped on stones and a floating log to merit being in the fourth place.
The fifth animal to arrive was the DRAGON who captivated the Jade Emperor with its good looks. The Emperor
was hoping the Dragon’s son would follow him, but then the SNAKE came forward and claimed that the Dragon
was, in fact, his adoptive father. And that’s how the wily Snake got the sixth rank.
Next came the HORSE and SHEEP. The kind Horse was willing to let the modest Sheep go first even if the
Sheep did not mind going after him. The Jade Emperor himself saw this show of modesty and rightfully named
the Horse seventh and the Sheep eighth among his guards.
Although the wise MONKEY had lagged behind, he managed to jump on trees and stones, and landed in the
ninth place. Last to arrive were the ROOSTER, DOG, AND BOAR, in that order.
The story also offers an explanation on why the Cat was missing from the line-up. It says that although the Rat
and the Cat were neighbors, the latter would always bully the small Rat. When they heard about the Emperor’s
decree, the Cat ordered the Rat to wake him up early enough for the race. The Rat said yes, but saw this is an
opportunity to exact his revenge. Thus, the following morning, the Rat left without letting the Cat know. When the
Cat woke up, the race was over and he missed his chance to be in the circle.
This further intensified the bad blood between them, and so whenever a cat appears, rats scamper in all
directions.

The order in which the 12 animals are arranged in the Chinese zodiac is based on the Chinese Yin and Yang
Theory. Each animal is given a yin or yang attribute based on the odd or even number of their claws or toes/
hoofs (even=yin; odd=yang). The animals are then arranged in an alternating and complementary yin-yang
sequence.

*Most animals have the same number of claws on its front and rear legs. However, the Rat has four toes on its fore legs and five
on its hind legs. Because of this rare attribute, the Rat is given top priority and ranks first among the 12 zodiac animals. It uniquely
combines the attributes of odd (yang) and even (yin). 4+5 = 9, and yang is dominant, so the Rat is classified as odd (yang) overall.

The Chinese zodiac hours
In Chinese culture, it is not only important to know a person’s zodiac year. The 12 zodiac animals are
also associated with the hours of a day. There are 12 periods at two-hour intervals and a zodiac animal is
designated for each of these periods. The zodiac hour is widely used for character and destiny analysis to
determine one’s “secret” animal. For example, a person born in the year of the Horse but within the hour
period of the Dog will have secret traits of the Dog. That is why it is important to know one’s hour of birth for
proper chart analysis.

Meaning
The Flying Star School of feng shui is a system that uses time dimension to analyze the type of
energy that dominates a particular compass direction. It changes yearly, monthly, daily, and even
hourly. According to its principles, positive or negative energies may create harmony or conflict in a
specific sector. It pays to know how these stars affect different locations in your home or office.
The Lucky Stars:
White Star (Element: Water) – brings new opportunities and financial gains. It also
# 1 symbolizes good reputation, as well as career and academic success.
Romance, Education & Travel Star (Element: Wood) – the star of romance, travel, and
# 4 self-development. It governs academics and scholarly pursuits.
Heaven Luck Star (Element: Metal) – brings nobleman’s luck or help from influential people.
# 6 The star for overall good fortune and potential windfall.
Prosperity Star (Element: Earth) – also known as the Primary Wealth Star, it brings

Misfortune Star (Element: Earth) – the most dreaded star because it brings many possible

Violence, Injury, Robbery Star (Element: Metal) – another vicious star to be careful about.
# 7 Its negative nature causes burglary, violence, rivalry, loss of wealth, and possible lawsuits.

North, The Three Killings / SAN SHA
The Three Killings in the North in 2018 could bring in deadly combination of three types of misfortune such as loss of wealth, frequent
mishaps and misfortunes. Thus, this sector should not be disturbed at all cost. Cures and enhancers should also be in place to mitigate the
unpleasant effects of this killing chi. This area should be left alone and not to be activated for groundbreaking, renovations, drilling, or
digging. When this sector is activated by loud noises, negative consequences may occur for the property itself and the residents. The Rat,
Ox & Boar people are especially vulnerable to this affliction. Cure this area with the image of Fu Dogs, Pi Yao and Three Divine guardians.
The afflicted animal signs should carry their allies and friends or mantra rings or bangles for proper protection.
North, Five Yellow Misfortune Star / WU WANG
The most dreaded and dangerous sector for 2018 is in the NORTH , which is going to affect houses with main door or property
facing North. It will also affect the Rat-born people. Do not make any major renovations, digging, or loud noises as disturbing this
area can have severe negative consequences. Keep the North area of your home more quiet than usual. If this area is disturbed, it
could lead to possible accidents, disasters, and serious misfortunes. Turn off any lights, remove any red motif color and remove any
earth-related energy in this area such as crystals. It is a MUST to CURE this area with the 5-element pagoda or the Kalachakra /
Mantra paintings or any 8 Auspicious Symbols. Rat-born people are advised to wear the 5 element pagoda accessories such as
earrings or pendant.
Northwest, The Grand Duke Jupiter / TAI SUI
The Grand Duke Jupiter is in the Northwest in this Year of the Dog 2018. Tai Sui, known also as Grand Commander of the year is
one of the highly respected and feared deities in Chinese beliefs. Do not disturb this area as doing so can bring severe losses,
bad luck, illness, and misfortune. Do not make any major renovation in this area that would entail cutting, digging, or drilling. Cures
such as the Pi Yao or Tai Sui Plaque are important features in the Northwest sector. Dog-born people are directly afflicted and
those born in the year of the Ox, Dragon, Sheep, Rooster & Dog are both indirectly afflicted. Other than tai sui amulets, wearing
mantra-inspired accessories and symbols of your allies and friends will help you go through the year with less obstacle. To seek
