FR Book Festival EE looks at the shape of things to come Issue 236 / Wednesday 6th November 2019 A stellar line-up of guest speakers and entertainers takes to the boards for this year’s Folkestone Book Festival running from 15-24 November, under the umbrella theme of ‘The Shape of Things to Come’, inspired by the district’s own visionary author, H G Wells. The Sandgate and Folkestone man was ahead of his time who was preoccupied by themes which affect us greatly today – globalisation, technology, biological issues, nationalism, war, migration and ecology. Among the impressive cast of speakers lined up to tackle the future of these global issues are Richard Dawkins, the BBC’s Carrie Gracie, Gavin Esler, BBC’s Nick Crane, MPs Damian Collins and Caroline Lucas, James Burke and many others – and they might have some books to promote too … The Festival is curated this year by Irish festival entrepreneurs, Liam Browne and Sean Doran from Arts Over Borders, with whom we the council may have taken short Parade hope to have a proper chat in our cuts or as one person put on social next issue.. media ‘been economical with the You can find copies of the event’s truth’ when it came to dealing with programme in libraries and the the former waste site. usual places, although all you need Protest Group The two grounds on which the to know is also at: council was challenged were: ‘That www.creativefolkestone.org.uk the officer’s report had significantly misled the Planning Committee by failing to advise it that the IN THIS ISSUE determined to application breached policies of the Council’s Core Strategy Local Plan’. Rock steady Ed makes tracks to the Railway Is that a new farmer taking care of his sheep or just someone shearing on the Marsh? Headline writers had a field day as ‘global superstar’ Ed Sheeran happily talked to dog walkers as he walked along the sandy beach of the sand dunes at Littlestone, and was also seen walking by the RNLI Lifeboat station. News of his visit soon spread on social media and reports soon came into the Looker office that he was seen on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway and also that he was reported to have tucked into some fish and chips at a local takeaway. Tammy Philips posted on facebook: “I could not believe it. I got out of the carriage at Dungeness only to bump into Ed Sheeran! He just smiled and said hello. I was completely dumbstruck! I asked him what was he doing down at Dungeness and he said he was just wandering around”. Dungeness and the Romney Marsh are no strangers to celebrity visits, with other pop legends visiting what is the UK’s only designated desert. Notable visitors include Queen’s Brian May, Elton John, Nicki Manaj and Kate Bush also being a regular visitor. The destination is also used for many pop videos and photo shoots. Other celebrities who have visited the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway include Roger Daltrey, who opened the ‘End of the Line’ Restaurant a few years ago. The ongoing Migrant Crisis By David Wimble The Looker first picked up on the issue of people making the crossing from France to the UK nearly three years ago. We had hoped we would be wrong, but since the first black RIBs (Rigid Inflatable Boats) were discovered, and no doubt many others that were not, there has been a huge number of crossings made, and with winter weather closing in more and more people are prepared to risk crossing the world’s busiest shipping lane. A major disaster is imminent. When migrants first hit our shores, it was national breaking news, but now it rarely gets a mention. Within the last two weeks, over 40 people have attempted the trip by boat and with the horrendous stories we have witnessed on our TV screens with the Vietnamese being found in Essex, The Looker thought it would look into the facts about what is being done to stop this trafficking trade escalating even further.
