11TH FEBRUARY 2022 BLAZER POST THE WEEKLY NEWSLETTER FROM BELMONT GROSVENOR SCHOOL Dear Parents As we reach the end of another jam packed week here at BGS I can hardly believe that we are almost half way through the academic year. I hope our Prep parents have enjoyed a week with no Maths or English homework and instead a focus on creating a project in their new TED books about what the word "Responsibility" means to you. The children in school have enjoyed competing in a home swimming gala, a trip to St James' Church, assemblies about mental well- being and Safer Internet Day and to end the week, the PTA have been all hands on deck to spread the joy through two fantastic BGS discos - evidence pictured below! To bring the focus back to Safer Internet Day for a moment, I have had some very in-depth conversations with your children this week about life online. Many of the discussions especially with the older children came round to handling life in the gaming world. Based on this I would really like to share with you as parents, and a parent myself, a couple of helpful resources about staying safe on gaming platforms. The first is a video created by the NSPCC and in 15 minutes talks through 'keeping children safe on gaming platforms'. The second is an informative web page from CEOP which gives some really helpful advice on supporting your children with safer gaming. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YO6Ux7qfYXk https://www.thinkuknow.co.uk/parents/articles/gaming/ I hope, if you have time to digest the links above during your busy weekend, these snippets of information will serve to help and inform the conversations with your children at home, and for those of you with very young children, aid your ability to support them in the future. Have a restful weekend! EYFS NEWS This week has been another hectic and fun filled week in our Early Years Department. The children in Magic Tree have been enjoying lots of explorative play, filling and pouring water and of course splashing too, rolling and cutting playdough and building with wet sand. Tree Tops have been learning about recycling and as you can see below, loved having their visitors on Monday from Open Country. Pre Reception and Reception had a visit to St James' Church for the wedding of Harper and Gus! We heard lots of lovely stories about their trip, even Harper's Daddy walking her By Jo Henderson, down the aisle! Nursery Manager This week in Magic Tree we have been busy making our Valentine's cards, they all look beautiful! The children also enjoyed a chocolate fruit fondue - they all got in a lovely chocolatey mess and today we all went for a lovely walk around the grounds in the fresh crisp air. It's been a week of reusing and recycling in Tree Tops and at the beginning of the week, we were joined by the charity Open Country. The visitors from the charity worked with the children on their recycling topic by making paper bricks from old newspapers - we tore them into strips and mixed with water - it was so much fun and the children have been tearing up paper ever since! The children been practising their sorting skills by separating plastics, metals and recyclables from one another and saving sea creatures by fishing out rubbish in the water tray. Tree Tops have been fascinated with the laminator, using it to create weather themed sun-catchers with tissue paper. What a lovely week - hope you all have a lovely weekend.
EYFS NEWS PRE RECEPTION It has been such a busy and joyful week in Pre Reception. We have been making life-sized pictures of ourselves and thinking really hard about the really important parts of our body that help us make sense of the world around us (the five senses). Some of us had a go at sounding out and writing the letters too! There has been a definite hint of spring this week, when we spotted snowdrops, leaf buds and lambs during Forest School. On Thursday we had a lovely morning out at St.James' By Mrs Partridge Church with Reception to learn all about weddings and the inside of the beautiful building. Have a restful weekend! Next week's letter: Ll RECEPTION We have had a lovely week in Reception, learning and talking a lot about Valentines Day which is fast approaching! The children have enjoyed learning why we celebrate Valentines Day, have been busy writing cards to each other, and had a go at making some Valentines Day Jam tarts as part of their baking session which, of course, went down a treat! To link in with our Valentines Day theme, the children enjoyed visiting St James' Church and finding out how some people celebrate their love for each other by getting married. Vicar Suzi talked to us about what a wedding ceremony involves and let us have a go at acting it out! We also learnt about some of the different types of objects that are found in a church, and went searching for them. By Mrs Gray
PRE PREP NEWS YEAR ONE This week has been 'Marvellous' in Year One. We have been working on the book 'George's Marvellous Medicine', by Roald Dahl. The children have enjoyed listening to the story, creating questions for George, making cups of tea for Grandma, writing descriptions of characters and creating their own marvellous By Mrs Shillam and medicine. Miss Bryant In Maths, we have been learning to count in twos and fives. We have been counting forwards and backwards and solving word problems involving these counting patterns. During our topic lessons we have designed and created space rockets. We thought about the properties of materials from our previous learning and tried to use suitable ones for our rockets. We are all very excited about the disco tonight as well! YEAR TWO For our literacy work this week, we have looked at writing descriptively using the best adjectives we could think of. This then lead us into learning about and using adverbs in our work. In Maths, we moved onto data handling. We have been conducting surveys in Pre Prep and representing the data in both tally charts and pictograms. The children decided they preferred to work with tally charts, as it is easier to count the numbers involved. After testing the properties of materials last week, the children designed and made their own rocket, thinking of what a rocket would need and the materials they should choose. We have also been exploring the internet and found it really tricky to explain exactly what the internet is and how it works. Maybe it is magic! By Mrs Oldham
PREP NEWS YEAR THREE Year Three have shown themselves in a wonderful light this week in many ways. Not only have the Year Three children shown their usual determination and diligence in the classroom for their academic lessons, but this week has also taken a musical twist with some of the children taking to the stage to perform in Tuesday’s Performing Arts Assembly. Their performances only went to emphasise just how hard they have been working in an By Mr Baird instrumental and musical context too! Wednesday afternoon saw some of the children take part in a Swimming fixture against Westville House School. For some, it was their first ever taste of competitive swimming and they most certainly did themselves proud by giving their best, encouraging their team and for displaying some very amiable sporting values. I would also like to take a moment to mention some of the children who have been away from school at various points throughout the last few of weeks. It is only right to not only state how much they have been missed, but also to draw attention to how hard they worked away from school and how seamlessly they settled back in once they have returned. Well done all of you! We are looking forward to welcoming parents in to take part in our Forest School lesson on Tuesday so please do come prepared for a range of eventualities in terms of weather! Have a great weekend and enjoy looking at some photos of then children in their PE lesson on Thursday where they warmed up for the PTA disco with some Samba dancing! YEAR FOUR We had such a wonderful time watching Gangsta Granny last Friday that we just had to use it as a source of inspiration for our English work this week. We have had fun creating story maps and designing costumes for the character, Ben. We may have slipped in some clips of The Masked Singer to get our creative juices flowing! Maths has been all things related to fractions this week. We have been working with fractions greater than one and have also looked at adding together more than two fractions. We have had some really good discussions using some high-level mathematical language. Wow Year Four! By Mrs de Gracia Our bird houses in DT are really coming on now and we have been using hammers and nails to secure our structures. We definitely have some budding engineers in our midst! I hope you all have a lovely weekend.
PREP NEWS YEAR FIVE Year Five have enjoyed continuing their learning about Gangsta Granny with a week themed all about it in English. You can see that Alfie channelled the Queen's Jubilee as well as the attempt to steal the Crown Jewels in Gangsta Granny by making his own crown. We were so enthusiastic about making our own instructions that I feel the children need to make some of their cabbage recipes at home. A cabbage pancake? Or By perhaps some delicious cabbage cookies for dessert? They remembered Mrs Johnston-Bannister imperative verbs and used the layout features of instructions. We then enjoyed creating some rather interesting costumes for' Ben' to participate in the dance show. We used our designs to use wonderfully descriptive vocabulary through our sentence structure and vocabulary choice. As you can see from the photo, we did such marvellous designs with lots of added detail. We recounted the story effectively to then inspire our own writing of an alternative ending for Gangsta Granny. We thought about what might happen if they got caught or how the story might have ended differently when they met the Queen. A great week of learning all about Gangsta Granny! Well done Year Five. YEAR SIX Another lovely week has concluded, the children have worked hard and played well. It was great to see them supporting the younger ones in the swimming gala. The members of the class that did not participate in the swimming were great leaders in the netball games we played outside. It was also great to see them join in with the fun at the 'Disco'. To finish the week off, they showed the rest of the school the fantastic work they had done in English. By Mrs Furniss
WELL-BEING WELL-BEING CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH WEEK On Wednesday all the children enjoyed a virtual assembly lead by experts from Place2be children’s mental health charity. The assembly included Strictly star Oti Mabuse and children from schools across the country. The theme of the assembly was ‘Growing Together’. The link for the assembly is https://youtu.be/dySvIlAuiEk What is 'Growing Together' and why is it important? Human beings change and grow– we do it all the time and in many different ways. Physical By Mr Wield growth is easy to see as we grow from babies to children, teenagers to adults. But growing emotionally is also an important part of our development. Things that upset us when we were younger may no longer overwhelm us as we grow and learn to cope with life’s ups and downs. Challenges and set-backs can help us to grow and adapt. Trying new things can help us to move beyond our comfort zone into a new realm of possibility and potential. However, emotional growth is often a gradual process that happens over time, and sometimes we might feel a bit ‘stuck’. At these times we are reminded of how much we need others in our lives to help us to keep growing. Emotional Goals The children have been encouraged to set some small goals around emotional growth, for example, learning to cope with a difficult feeling like anger; learning to say sorry when you have hurt somebody or learning to speak up for something you believe in. They will create a display of stars with achievable goals to work on during school and at home. Please take the time to discuss with the children the goals they have chosen and why? Maybe we could all set our own emotional goals. Pictures of the display to follow next week - please let me know how you get on! DRAMA ITS PANTO TIME! (OH NO IT ISN'T...) Prep children have all been working on Pantomime scripts this term. They have chosen characters and practised being outrageous! As we head towards the end of term, we have been experimenting with how much of a difference costume makes to their characterisation. The resulting ugly sisters, wicked stepmothers and sour faced health and safety officers have been hilarious. By Mrs Wilson We hope you enjoy the photos, we certainly enjoyed composing them!

SPORTS WELL-BEING BLOG The last week has flown by, much like the majority of this half of term, and it is my intention next week to go into a bit more detail about some of the amazing things our children have been up to over the last few weeks both inside and outside of school. There is still time to get in touch with me and share anything that you or the children are particularly proud of, would like to talk about or would like to me share with the wider school community. In terms of next week, please do note that the Under 11 Football fixture vs Lady Lane is By Mr Baird now at Lady Lane rather than BGS. We do apologise for any inconvenience in this respect but hope you can understand that this was necessary in order to retain the fixture. SPORTS STAR OF THE WEEK This week’s BGS Sports Star of the Week is awarded to Rahul in Year Three for his excellent attitude and progress in the swimming pool. Not only did he compete against a Year 6 in Wednesday’s swimming gala at home to Westville House, but competing in this gala was a milestone in that it was his first ever swimming gala and displayed the huge progress he has made with his swimming since joining us last year.
