‘Ad Vitam Paramus’ ‘We are Preparing for Life’. Ambition Follow us on Twitter @westcravenhigh Friday 26 February 2021 We can be followed @WestCravenHighSchool “You always pass failure on the way to success.” Mickey Rooney Key Messages I hope that you and your family enjoyed the break over half term. I am delighted to be able to welcome your child back to school shortly. I recently wrote to you about the Government’s announcement on the reopening of schools to all students from Monday 8 March. To recap: we plan a staggered start to the week commencing Monday 8 March. This will enable the necessary testing. The plan is as follows. Year 11 returns on Monday, Year 10 on Tuesday, Year 9 on Wednesday, Year 8 on Thursday and Year 7 on Friday. Do ensure that your child is fully prepared for their return with full school uniform and a face mask. Students will be offered lateral flow tests, and I hope everyone will take up the offer. This will help us ensure our school is as safe as possible, reduce the risk of transmission and prevent the need to close bubbles, or even the whole school. All the relevant safety and control measures are in place to reduce the risk of transmission. We are working hard to ensure that your child’s transition back to school is as smooth as possible, with their well- being at the heart of what we do. We have a new way of staying in touch, needtochat@westcraven.co.uk I would like any student who is worried or concerned for themselves or a friend to use this email to contact our pastoral team. This link can also be found at the top of your child’s Class Charts notifications. Ambition is our core value of the week. Year 7 Geography students have been thinking about animal and plant adaptations in different African biomes. They have submitted ambitious designs to our ‘biome in a box’ challenge. It's Fairtrade Fortnight and we began activities for it over half term with the Fairtrade Sweet Treat Challenge. Isabelle, Bailey, Riley, Olly and Zak opted for Banana Loaf made with Fairtrade bananas and chocolate, whilst Joshua enjoyed a banana & chocolate fondue. I cannot wait to share other Fairtrade dishes before Fairtrade Fortnight is out! As a Reading Academy, we are gearing up for World Book Day next week. Award winning hip-hop poet Karl Nova is live streaming an event hosted by Burnley Football Club. This is just one of the activities we have planned. Also next week is National Careers Week. The School Liaison team from Nelson and Colne College and Accrington and Rossendale College will be hosting live chats for students and their parents. They will offer support with college applications, apprenticeships, CV’s and interviews and much more. See the article later in this E-bulletin for details of how to join in the live chats. Year 9 will also be involved in careers activities exploring which GCSE courses will match their interests and career aspirations in form tutor time. Our Year 9 virtual GCSE options evening will take place on Thursday 18 March. Do continue to stay safe and follow all Government guidance. Mrs Tracy Foy Principal

We are a Reading Academy It is an exciting week for our staff and young readers as we prepare for our virtual World Book Day next Thursday and dust down the library shelves in preparation for our forthcoming return to school. Although lockdown has impacted our lives in so many ways, there have been some positives; staying at home has given many of us the opportunity to revisit and discover the world of literature, and we are looking forward to continuing that journey back together again. This week’s guest is Amanda Melton CBE, Principal and Chief Executive of Nelson and Colne College Group. Thank you to Amanda for sharing with us her reading experiences and personal message here: I studied English Literature A Level, but I was never very bookish. I think my enjoyment of reading came to me only when sitting on a beach on an annual holiday, when the hours were stretched before me and everyone else in the family had their head in a book. But about 15 years ago I was invited to join a book club. The club meets monthly, currently on zoom of course, and there’s a haphazard approach to choosing a book we will all read between meetings. But the group is incredibly enriching for me, because it’s a discipline to read regularly, usually authors I’ve never previously been introduced to, and a variety of genres. Within the group, I become a passenger and enable others to take charge, which is so welcome when I have a job which requires me to be firmly at the helm. The people in the group are a diverse group of women of different ages and backgrounds, each with a personal history which affects their appreciation of the book we are reading. Most recently, the chosen book was Olive Again, sequel to Olive Kitteridge, a captivating book set in Maine with a short story structure dealing with the issues of being an older married couple! Thanks to lockdown and a distinct lack of alternative pursuits, I’ve become so much better at finishing the book before each meeting, and the opportunity to escape into a quiet corner at home and read about other people’s fictional lives in far-flung places has filled a void in my normal travels If you get chance to join a group, I’d highly recommend it. Or perhaps you can start one with a group of friends, or people from your street or workplace. Amanda Reading quote of the week… “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirate’s loot on Treasure Island.” Walt Disney

It is clear, that in some year groups we have work to do! The pastoral team are regularly making contact with those students who are not logging in. We are, however, incredibly grateful for the support of our parents in helping many of our young people engage with their online lessons. If you do have any concerns in regard to your child and their access to their lessons, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. help@westcraven.co.uk DFE Guidelines state: the remote education provided should be equivalent in length to the core teaching pupils would receive in school and will include both recorded or live direct teaching time, and time for pupils to complete tasks and assignments independently. The amount of remote education provided should be, as a minimum: Key Stages 3 and 4 to receive 5 hours each school day. If parents feel their children’s school is not providing remote education of a suitable quantity and quality, they are encouraged to in the first instance raise their concerns with the teacher or headteacher. In developing their remote education, we expect schools to: Have systems for checking, daily, whether pupils are engaging with their work, and work with families to rapidly identify effective solutions where engagement is a concern. Student wellbeing We are becoming increasingly conscious of the amount of time our young people spend in front of a computer screen and the ongoing effects this lockdown is having on the wellbeing of our students. As a result, our PHSE coordinator Mrs Pilling has put together a student passport for those students in Years 7, 8 and 9. This passport contains several different challenges and activities, that we hope will be enjoyable and fun, but won't mean more time in front of a computer. Details of these tasks and introduction video have been set on class charts. We are pleased to say there will be prizes given to the students who produce the most creative responses to these tasks.

You’re in your bubble. I found that…one of the most important things you could realize is that you’re not alone, you’re not the first to go through it; you’re not going to be the last.
