Term 2 Week 6 WHS NEWS 5 June 2020 Knowledge conquers all On the front page: Sorry Day flag raising WELCOME BACK STUDENTS
Term 2 Week 6 Page 2 WELCOME BACK STUDENTS A message from the Principal Dear Parents and Carers It has been wonderful for students and staff to begin to return to some sense of normality in our work in the important business of continuing to educate our students. I would like to thank you all for your support and cooperation during the IN THIS period of intense isolation we were forced into. While we are starting to see a return to schooling with many aspects returning to ISSUE normal we are still unable to run excursions, interschool sports and other activities that add to the experiences our students are able to access during their schooling. Sorry Day & Reconciliation This will gradually change and also return to normal, however for now we must move forward slowly, carefully and thoughtfully. Week - pages 3-5 In keeping students at school safe and in ensuring that we keep our families and Charlie excels in Nanga community safe I require that students who travel to and from school on school buses do that in the most direct route possible. While we have returned to our usual Mai Awards - page 5 finish time of 2:48 pm on Mondays, continuation of this will only be possible if those students who catch buses on Monday afternoons remain on school premises Chad's Shave is happening between 2:48 pm and the time they are called to get on their bus at the High School bus bay. Students are not permitted to board a bus at the Primary School. soon! - page 6 Students who walk home need to go directly home and not make stops at other Captured! - page 6 schools, unless picking up siblings, or who have arrangements in place that they meet with you or a family member straight after school. The more we limit movement outside of the school at the end of the school day the greater the Drama, Drama, Drama! - chance of keeping everyone in our community safe. Thank you for your support in page 7 this matter and would you please discuss this with your child? As we begin to restore normality back to our school day I will also seek your Les saisons with Year 7 support to ensure that your child is at school every day, is supported and praised French - page 7 for being in every lesson and engaged with the learning taking place. Sometimes this is a simple as asking your child what they learnt today – be aware that “nothing” is probably not an accurate reflection of their day or their learning. If From the Careers desk - your child needs support in page 8 ensuring that they have the correct equipment for learning, please talk to your child’s year adviser as the school can assist in these matters. 2020 Merit Scheme I am also seeking your support in ensuring that all students are in appropriate school uniform. This is one way we can continue to build and create a strong sense changes - page 9 of school community and pride. It also helps to ensure that students don’t stand out for the wrong reasons or are criticised by other students for what they are wearing. The Quiz - pages 10-11 Again I can offer school support if there are difficulties in providing appropriate school uniform. Please let the school know if and how we can assist you in this matter. Again thank you and have a relaxing and enjoyable long weekend. FACULTY AWARDS Every Monday on assembly a different faculty presents their Faculty Excellence Awards. Students are chosen for being consistently engaged and achieving academically within that subject area. Congratulations to all students CITIZENSHIP who received awards from the PDHPE faculty this week. AWARDS The citizenship awards recognise students who display good behaviour and service to our school community. Congratulations to Sophie and Alex who are this week's award recipients. Term 2 Week 6 Page 3 SORRY DAY - 26TH MAY FLAG RAISING CEREMONY KINCHELA BOYS HOME VIDEO CONFERENCE Late last year we were very fortunate to have members of the Kidnapped Generation come to the school to share their stories. This was part of an educational program run by Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation (KBHAC). We had the same experience organised for this year, however, COVID threw a spanner in the works. "...hearing Uncle Bobby's story was a very powerful moment." Mrs McGufficke When the opportunity arose to participate in a Zoom (video conference) with the members of the Kidnapped Generation we saw this as a powerful learning opportunity for our students. A number of students from Year 10, Year 12 and students from the Support Unit were a part of the session and despite the technical difficulties experienced, hearing Uncle Bobby’s story was a very powerful moment. This has provoked many conversations about our past as a nation and enabled others, students and staff, to begin to share their own stories. We are so appreciative of his willingness to share his story with us. Openness about the past will allow for healing. This was a significant event to mark Sorry Day at the school. I would like to thank Shonekqua Donovan for her Acknowledgment of Country and the students who asked questions of Uncle Bobby. Term 2 Week 6 Page 4 RECONCILIATION WEEK RECO NCILI ART ATIO PIECE N Students were invited to take part in a large Reconciliation Art Piece that will displayed in the school as a way of coming together to connect and share pride within our school community, and to acknowledge our commitment to reconciliation. Term 2 Week 6 Page 5 RECONCILIATION WEEK "IN MY BLOOD IT RUNS" VIEWING On Thursday 28th and Friday 29th students were invited to view the newly released film “In my Blood it Runs” in the school library over lunch. We had an amazing turnout of 35 students who viewed the film and enjoyed connecting with one another over popcorn and snacks. The movie is based on a ten-year-old Dujuan who is a child-healer, a good hunter, speaks two Aboriginal languages, but is ‘failing’ in school. We walk with him as he grapples this educational schism and somewhere in-between finds a space to dream, imagine and hope for his future self. The film focuses on education in and beyond the classroom, and magnifies the profound successes that are rarely captured by mainstream narratives. "Everyone talks about making our children ready for school, but we have to make school ready for our children." Margaret Kemarre Turner OAM, Arrernte Elder and advisor CHARLIE EXCELS IN NANGA MAI AWARDS The Nanga Mai Awards are an annual awards ceremony held by the Department of Education to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Aboriginal students. Nanga Mai is an Eora (Sydney) word meaning ‘to dream’. Charlie was nominated as an outstanding Aboriginal student and demonstrated excellence across a diversity of areas. Congratulations Charlie on your achievement. Email: wauchope-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au Website: http://www.wauchope-h.schools.nsw.edu.au
