Background - Project Initiation o 2016 Council direction in response to a Delta Naturalists’ Society presentation and request. o One comprehensive document that brings together existing and proposed environmental policies and processes. o Incorporate the lens of biodiversity protection and birds throughout Delta’s processes. o Delta has a long history of actions in support of birds and biodiversity. 2
Background – Why Birds? Several million migratory birds use the Fraser River Estuary and Delta as a stopover on the Pacific Flyway. >70 waterbird species >10 raptor species >70 eagles nest in area •2 blue heron nest colonies • 6 bird species at risk •3 international designations • 3 wildlife management areas 3
Background - Biodiversity • Species and habitat abundance and variety • Healthy ecosystem networks support better biodiversity and are more adaptable to change • Scaled from backyards up to Fraser River Estuary • Threats include: habitat loss, invasive species, climate change, pollutants 4
• 48.4% Agricultural Areas • 21.3 % Environmentally Sensitive Areas • 2% National Wildlife Area • 1.3% Parks and Recreation Areas 5
Stakeholder Workshops o A series of 3 facilitated workshops where stakeholders provided comment, expertise, and suggestions. o Strategies vision, mission, values, goals and objectives were articulated and documented. o Brainstorming on proposed strategies to create an action oriented document. 6

Vision Delta’s globally significant bird populations, unique biodiversity, and ecological functions are protected and enhanced for future generations. 2018 International Ornithological Congress • Six different tours in Delta including a pre- congress 2 day shorebird tour. • Delta will assist with promotion and some parking logistics. • Delta will provide speakers on select tours on the irrigation & drainage system. • Street Banner program: looking at potential to include a bird focused banner to be displayed in August 2018. • Establish a Delta display at the Congress exhibition hall 15
