At Big Flats Elementary, Big Flats News we will SOAR together as we explore our “wonders” in a fun and engaging community, where we will March/April 2022 inspire each other to achieve anything! Dear Parents and Guardians, Elementary Lunches (K-6) I hope this newsletter finds you well and adjusting to all the recent changes with the COVID-19 protocols. Obstructing the view on Maple Street is very dangerous for parents trying to pull out. Please be patient and wait your turn. If your vehicle cannot fit straight at the end of the line when entering our school campus, please wait! Please be courteous and take turns alternating east and west bound traffic when entering our campus. Please DO NOT block the entrance of our neighbors’ driveways. Please leave each driveway accessible so that our neighbors may enter and exit their homes safely. We appreciate our neighbors and want to always be respectful! If the fire siren goes off, please pull off the road immediately! Please continue to be patient and appreciative of our staff who do their best to ensure everyone gets home safely. Please let our staff know how much you appreciate them. A simple thank you goes a long way! PLEASE KEEP YOUR FAMILY NAME TENT POSTED UNTIL YOUR CHILDREN HAVE ENTERED YOUR VEHICLE! NYS K-12 Computer Science and Digital Fluency Learning Standards The Board of Regents adopted these new standards in December 2020. The standards are organized into five key concepts: Impacts of Computational Networks and Cybersecurity Digital Literacy Computing Thinking System Design This month we are going to take a deep dive into the first concept. The Impacts of Computing standards promote an understanding of the evolving impact of computing technologies on society through many lenses, including personal, social, cultural, accessibility, legal, economic, and ethical. Below are a few examples on how these standards could be met in the classroom from NYSED.gov. Topic Standard Identifier Example Students could be discussing the differences between Society K-1.IC.1 playing a board game and a video game or mailing a letter and getting a text message. Students can be “inventors” and design a technology that Ethics 2-3.IC.3 makes their life easier. They can then explore technology that also relates to that field. Analyze specific classroom applications from the Accessibility 4-6.IC.6 perspective of different disabilities and offer suggestions. A teacher might spotlight different careers and then have Career Paths 7-8.IC.7 students develop a mind map for the classroom wall that connects all the different career pathways. Students can do virtual field trips to labs and various Career Paths 9-12.IC.7 locations to learn about different fields of science. THERE IS A SPECIAL MATHEMATICAL DAY THIS MONTH - WE CALL IT PI DAY ROBOTICS Can I be of some assistance, human? What does a robot look like? If the first thought that comes to mind is something that looks like a human (a humanoid robot), you might be surprised to learn that most robots do not look like that. Robots come in all different shapes and sizes. They are usually built for the job that they are going to perform. Learning about robotics can make us better learners, problem solvers, cooks, engineers, airplane pilots, video game designers, drivers, athletes, or almost anything else. How can you get involved? Some schools have after- school robotics clubs or competition teams.
