a Letter from our ceo Dear Friends of Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA, I extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to our extraordinary donors, supporters, volunteers and staff who helped make 2014 a remarkable year for this incredible agency. Your generous commitment to our mission helps provide those critical resources needed to increase our impact and truly make a difference in the lives of at-risk youth in Greater Philadelphia. As I near completion of my second year as CEO, I remain as excited and optimistic as my very first day, perhaps even more so. During 2014, there were a number of accomplishments of which I am extremely proud. Many of them are highlighted throughout this report. But as I spend more time marcus allen in our communities and witness firsthand what is happening to our youth, I am forced CEO, bbbs Sepa to ask the question, “Are we doing enough?” The sobering reality is that Philadelphia has become the poorest big city in America. There are over 120,000 children in our region living in poverty, with 60,000 in families so poor they survive on less than $10,000 per year. Our local youth are confronted with deep-rooted issues such as mass incarceration, teen violence and the deterioration of our public school systems – issues that have become increasingly prevalent across our great nation. So, what is it that will mobilize our citizens to get involved? What is it that Big Brothers Big Sisters stands for as it relates to these issues that will, more than likely, come to each of our doorsteps if we don’t act? I believe the answer is, collaboration. Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA has been tackling some of these issues for 100 years. As we celebrate our centennial year, we aim to establish a platform of collaboration that will define the next 100 years. With this in mind, we launched The Mentoring Partnership & Resource Center (MPRC), an intermediary that will provide leadership and peer support to more than 130 community-based youth mentoring organizations in Southeastern PA. Our aim is to expand the field’s regional capacity to provide more than 200,000 school-aged children in need with compassionate, caring adult mentors. We are also excited to launch a new marketing campaign entitled, “Make It BIG.” The call is for individuals, institutions and community members to step up in a BIG way in support of our local youth, whether that be with their time or financial support. And thanks to some significant in-kind media sponsorships, you will see this campaign in a variety of formats during 2015 including digital, print, television and radio. Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA has a rich history, and is poised for an even greater future. It is clear that we have a tremendous responsibility. So now, more than ever before, let’s make it BIG, together. Marcus Allen Chief Executive Officer Big Brothers Big Sisters Southeastern PA Big Sister Carolina & Little Sister Jaqueline 1

letter from our board chair Dear Supporters, As I look back on all we accomplished during 2014, the first thought that comes to mind is, “What a fantastic year!” In 2014, we served more than 6,300 children and adults engaged in one-to-one mentoring relationships. We introduced innovative programs, we established new partnerships with community businesses and organizations, we were repeatedly named as one of the top mentoring organizations in the country, and we advanced along a path of strategic growth. brad aronson What has stayed the same is our relentless focus on outcomes and on serving Board chair & Big brother the children who need us most. Long-term, independent research shows us that kids in our programs are less likely than their peers to use drugs, drink alcohol, skip school or engage in violent acts. Our own agency surveys confirm this type of positive impact. Best of all, especially here in Greater Philadelphia, we are seeing an increase in students’ personal educational expectations, where more than 80% of mentored students tell us they are sure they will finish high school and go to college. I am amazed by the hard work of our agency’s staff. As a Big Brother I see firsthand how carefully our agency manages every match we make. As a board member, I am impressed by how they run our business, as well as their ability to get so much done with limited resources. I am inspired by our Bigs for their diligence, hard work and fun they create for Littles in our programs. They continually offer what may be the most precious gift of all – their time. I am proud to serve alongside of our governing and regional board members. They are in our communities raising money and developing relationships that allow us to serve more children. Their support allows us to continue to grow and to think BIG. In 2015, we celebrate the agency’s 100th anniversary! This is an incredible milestone that not only acknowledges the 120,000 children we have served over the last century, but provides a platform to establish how we will positively impact even more young lives during the next 100 years. On behalf of the children and families we serve, thank you. It has been a privilege to serve as board chair for another year. /bbbssepa @bbbbssepa @bbbs_sepa makeitbig100.org #makeitbig our 2015 events: March 16th: Ribbon Cutting - The goal of the MPRC is to improve the quality and effectiveness of mentoring in greater Philadelphia and expand our impact to over 200,000 at-risk children in need of positive adult role models. We will work with over 130 other nonprofit organizations by focusing on training, technical assistance, engaging stakeholders, and data collection. April 11th: Youth Mayoral Summit - Over 150 youth from various nonprofit organizations across Philadelphia attended an open forum with the 2015 Mayoral candidates. After asking their most pressing questions, a mock election was held and our youth selected who they believed to be the best candidate. Our local youth named Doug Oliver the winner. April 25th: Alumni Reunion - We held our first ever Alumni Reunion to reconnect with former Bigs, Littles, board members and staff. An Alumni Association was officially launched at this event. August 17th: Annual Golf Classic & Auction at Philadelphia Cricket Club in Flourtown, PA. Visit makeitbig100.org/golf to learn more. October 13th: The Big Night Out: An Evening to Honor Mentoring Heroes – Join us at the Kimmel Center for a monumental celebration including entertainment and the distribution of six major awards.
