About Us Beaver Cove Gardens began as a hobby farm growing tomatoes for a nice salad. We started with a wheelbarrow and a shovel and kept growing from there. Located in Cape Breton, NS on the Bras D’or Lakes, our family grows vegetable transplants and prepared arrangements for those interested in growing their own gardens. More than a decade ago, we started growing vegetable and flower transplants for family, neighbours and friends. Soon we were being approached by local restaurants, community gardens and local garden centers. Everyone loved our plants! Proudly grown here in our local climate. Hearty enough to transplant and exciting heirloom and heritage varieties that were becoming more popular with each successful crop. Now, ten years later, our transplants are proudly sold at retailers and garden centers all over Nova Scotia. We provide sustainable, hearty transplants and arrangements for vegetables, herbs, flowers and unique botanicals. We enjoy working with our clients to customize their plant orders to fit their customers needs. We strive to always provide healthy, hearty plants ready to go right into your garden. Be it for health, lifestyle change, getting outdoors or love of cooking, starting a garden is a great experience and we want to help you get started! Our Services Vegetable Transplants Our most popular seller! We sell our veggie transplants in a 4 inch biodegradable pot that reduces transplant shock and maintains water. Retailers love these as they pack square for display purposes, and hold water on hot days. Our transplants are started early to provide a mature plant that will begin growing quicker than typical transplants. We harden our plants gradually over the growing season to make sure they can stand up to Maritime Climates. We offer a catalog of favorites and a huge list of other varieties of vegetable, herb, edible flowers, flowers, etc. Look for this years new catalog items! Custom Planters & Basket Arrangements We are pleased to offer custom arrangements for a variety of hanging baskets and planter arrangements for types of growers. We start our arrangements early so they are full and ready to enjoy when spring arrives. We offer flower arrangements, hanging edibles, herb garden planters and individual transplants. Page 3
Why Choose Beaver Cove Gardens? Easy Carry 18 Pack Trays Our 4” transplants ship in 18 pack daisy trays. These maximize your selling space and allow for easy delivery. Trays can be moved with ease when refilling retail space. We have a variety of planter and tray combinations to meet your retail needs. Healthy Plants We start our transplants early and let them get used to our local climate. You can expect your transplants to arrive strong, healthy and ready for sale. Our climate controlled greenhouses allow for plants to be raised with natural sunlight and air while slowly tempering them to our climate. All of our transplants are fan hardened to cope with East Coast weather. Eco Friendly Containers Beaver Cove Gardens recognizes the impact of humanity on the planet. We are always looking for ways to reduce our environmental footprint. We are proud to use peat design planting containers which are 100% biodegradable and reduce the risk of transplant shock on plants. While we strive to use environmentally friendly products where possible, we always encourage growers to recycle plastic containers when they can! Tags and Signage All of our plants come with custom laminated signs that will survive damp greenhouses and watering. Our signage provides planting and growing instructions, plant variety information, meal ideas, and other helpful information for both your staff and customers. Sweet Peppers (4” Biodegradable Pot & Tag) Better Belle Popular green-to-red sweet pepper known for its early maturity. High yields and great taste. Disease resistant. Produces 4-5” fruit in 75 days. Anaheim A long flat tapered pepper that has a mild flavour. Great for roasting and stuffing. Produces 6” long pepper in 75 days. Purple Beauty Juicy, thick fleshed bell with purple skin. Great in salads or on the grill. 70 day maturity for these 3-4” peppers. Orange Blaze This is an AAS winning 3 lobed pepper. Ripens early to produce a 4-5” orange sweet bell. Disease resistant plant will produce high yield peppers in 60 days. Snackabelle Red A sweet little pepper with thick flesh and dark red. Looks spicy but tastes so sweet! This 2” pepper is great on the grill or stuffed and roasted for appetizers. 75 day maturity for a green to red ripening pepper that will produce all summer long. Sweetie Pie An elegant little plant. This AAS Winner is as pretty as it is productive. A small bush plant full of sweet little peppers that ripen green to red. This plant grows well on patios and will survive blazing hot days in the sun. Excellent partner to Chili Pie. Page 8
Hot Peppers (4” Biodegradable Pot & Tag) Cayenne Long Thin This is the ultimate spicy pepper. Packs a punch and is great in sauces, soups, noodles, etc. Can be pickled, dried, crushed, or eaten online as a dare. No matter what your plans, these will turn up the heat. Long thing peppers that curl at the tips, maturing in 65-70 days. Cubanelle A mild kick in this 7 inch pepper. Starts sweet and with a hint of heat. This pepper comes from the Caribbean and is used for dishes with a mix of sweet and spicy. Harvest when lime green or let mature to a deep red. Great early harvest period after maturing in 60 days. Habanero Orange Our standard habanero ripens to a brilliant orange and adds a real kick to whatever you are cooking. These tiny 2” fruit go a long way and are often pickled or used for sauces. Scoville Heat scale rating of 215000. Matures in 90 Days Habanero Red The hottest pepper that can be grown outdoors in our East Coast climate. Typical habaneros mature to orange, while these go to a deep red and will bring tears to the eyes of even the biggest chicken wing fan. These little gems can burn so please wash your hands and avoid touching your eyes after handling these peppers in the kitchen or the garden! Matures in 95 days. Page 9
Hot Hungarian This is the same pepper used at BBQs and tailgates all over the country. Best known as Banana Peppers, these red and yellow peppers are often pickled or used in salads. Nice little punch of heat that gets stronger as these peppers mature over 70 days. Jalapeno La Bomba These strong intermediate plants will produce pecks of peppers! We recommend pruning Jalapeños plants to 4 producing branches, so you can get large fruit from plants during our shorter growing season. Lovely green peppers with thick flesh. Great for stuffing, baking or frying. Add a bit of heat to burgers or pickle for your next taco night! 65 day maturity. Tobasco This cute little pepper packs a punch! Mexican heritage pepper grows in a bush style plant producing bunches of red and yellow fruit. Enjoy these peppers in salads, sauces, salsas, or pickle for your own vinegars and hot sauces! Thin 2” peppers mature after 80 days. This plant produces huge yields with pruning and support. Chili Pie A matching hot pepper for Sweetie Pie. Another AAS Winner that is as pretty as it is productive. A small bush plant full of spicy little bell shaped peppers that heat up as they ripen green to red. This plant grows well on patios and will survive hot summer days in the sun. Page 10
Cherry Tomatoes (4” Biodegradable Pot & Tag) Crokini An AAS winner. This cherry tomato is the perfect mix of sweet and tart growing in little clusters. Plants produce hundreds of 0.5oz little fruit after a 60 day maturity. Disease and blight resistant. Indeterminate. Heartbreaker Vallery A decorative cocktail tomato that is shaped like a heart when cut in half! They are sweet tasting and make great additions to soups, salads, or pan pastas. Great for patio planters or hanging baskets. Perform best with good soil drainage. Ripens in 70 days. Determinate Gold Spark Vigorous crack resistant tomato plant that produces a golden grape tomato that is packed with sugar. These plants produce in high yields and offers disease resistance. Great for salads, this indeterminate plant will grow as tall as you let it with support. Matures in 70 days. Grows well on a stringer or tall support. Rapunzel Well if Rapunsel was a redhead… etc etc. This is a really special plant. Growing 20” long trusses loaded with very sweet cherry tomatoes. Each braid ripens in a tighter window than most cherry tomatoes, allowing you to harvest entire vines at a time. Be the winner of any Insta contest on your next picnic or dinner. These vines of sweet beauties are restaurant quality and very early producers. 60 day maturity for braids of perfect red tomatoes. Indeterminate. Page 11
Sun Sugar Golden cherry tomato is very sweet! Great tomato for salads, appetizers and pizza toppings. These hardy tomatoes are split resistant and grow in huge quantities. Sun Sugar tomatoes ripen on the vine in large bunches and will produce until first frost. Disease resistant and great early pollinator. This is our family’s favorite cherry tomato. It ripens early and is the sweetest cherry we’ve tasted. We eat these off the vine when working in the greenhouse. Early producers at a 60 day maturity, We dare you not to love them. Indeterminate. Sweet Millions This variety is now highly sought after in Nova Scotia! Plain and simple, this mini cherry producer is an indeterminate plant that yields huge amounts of the cutest tomatoes you’ll ever add to a salad. These sweet little mouth poppers will produce for about a 1-2 months LONGER than you thought possible. When we tested this variety, we thought it was done at the end of the season. After putting it in the cold frame on a stringer to experiment, we were still picking tomatoes for Christmas. Seriously! A nifty variety we are sure you will enjoy. 70 days for ripe fruit, indeterminate plant is blight resistant with non-cracking skin. Yellow Pear This old time non-hybrid heirloom tomato is loaded with hundreds of small 1-2” yellow pear-shaped fruit. Yellow Pear tomatoes ripen on the vine in large bunches and will produce until first frost. Disease resistant and great early pollinator matures in 80 days. Crack resistant and bright golden colour. Fantastico An AAS award winner with blight tolerance. This is the restaurant favorite for presentation and taste. Clean, sweet and high yielding, this plant will produce buckets of tomatoes. It grows well in planters, containers or hanging baskets. These little half ounce grape tomatoes grow in clusters and grow to the outside of the plant making for easy picking. Grow one as a patio gift that keeps on giving! 50 Day maturity will have you eating tomatoes on your Canada Day Barbeque! Determinate Red Profusion This patio planter or hanging basket tomato will produce long chains of sweet, 1” fruit that are perfect for salads, pizzas or veggie trays. Try these grilled on the vine with dinner or with eggs on toast! 52 day maturity will give apartment dwellers fresh veggies in May! Indeterminate Page 13
Medium Tomatoes (4” Biodegradable Pot & Tag) Venti Salad Our new saladette! A mid size slicer perfect for burgers. Great with basil and fresh mozzarella, this is a staple for gardeners. A dependable firm tomato, oval shaped but full of juice. Disease resistant and will grow as tall as you let it. These go on sandwiches at our house and are often found in pockets as snacks. 70-75 day maturity and disease resistant. Indeterminate Rutgers A great heirloom tomato, Rutgers is naturally disease resistant and produces firm red fruit until first frost. Unchanged for centuries, this all season producer is split resistant and is an open pollinator for other parts of your garden. Great slicing tomato that ripens quickly. A true heirloom variety, amazing sliced on the table or on a burger. Matures in 80 days and produces in clumps of 4-5 tomatoes that ripen together. Indeterminate. Carolina Gold Small plants bear medium, smooth yellow fruits. Beefsteak type and delicious slicer. Great with goats cheese and fresh herbs. Tough plant can grow supported or on a stringer. Strong stalk will support more than 5 feet of yellow tomatoes all summer. Split resistant. Determinate Amish Paste A long-time favorite heirloom plum. Large for a saucer. Amish Paste’s slightly irregular plum or strawberry shaped fruits are meaty with excellent flavour. Few seeds and low moisture mean they are heat resistant and make lovely sauces. 85 days to the sauce pot. If you ripen blushed fall tomatoes on the windowsill you can get an extra batch of sauce from your crop! Indeterminate. Page 14
Beefsteak Tomatoes (4” Biodegradable Pot & Tag) Buffalo Sun This NEW 2021 AAS Winner is an F1 Hybrid, designed to mix the best of heirloom taste and gorgeous colour. This 24 ounce huge slicer ripens to a mottled mix of all the reds and golds of the perfect sunset. Sweet, colorful, the best sandwich or burger tomato you will ever try. Worth the wait at 70 days, these crack resistant giants will produce fruit late into the season. Typically grows 6-7 feet and will be the talk of any farm table. Indeterminate. Beefmaster Well this is your 2lb tomato. Mouth watering, deep red flesh and full flavoured. This is the tomato to let grow out for the whole season. Make a sandwich with a single slice! This plant produces a vine strong enough to hold the fruit, and boasts natural disease resistance and blight resistance. This indeterminate tomato will double in size if supported and produces gorgeous ripe tomatoes, or amazing green chow tomatoes depending on your needs. This beefsteak will literally drop jaws. “Did you grow that?” Will be your new anthem. Enjoy this big beauty in 80-90 days depending on the amount of sun it can get. Brandywine An heirloom variety dating back hundreds of years, the unchanged beauty produces large, sweet rich tomatoes. 7 inch fruit will cover this plant after 80 days, producing a heritage taste from an historic producer. Burpee Big Boy Large 2 lb tomatoes, perfectly round this plant is used to produce restaurant quality slicers for sandwiches, burgers, and heirloom plates. Deep red, and hugely sweet on the tongue, these this fleshed beauties will be growing up to 7 feet with support. Ready in 80 days and worth the wait, these burger toppers will keep your guests asking for more! Indeterminate. Cherokee Purple An heirloom tomato which wins taste-testing competitions around the country. The tomato is a beautiful dusky purple with a deep bright red interior. Grows well in Canada and doesn’t trade taste for looks! This Sweet slice will show you why people grow different types of tomatoes. Sweet, dark fruit can be ripened on the vine or in your kitchen window. An old trick is to ripen tomatoes in a paper bag on the kitchen counter. Let the fruit ripen on the vine for the best flavor. Strong growing plant benefits from staking or caging. Extra support will improve yield with this purple beauty in 80-90 days. Indeterminate. Page 16
Other Veggies (4” Biodegradable Pot & Tag) Asparoc Broccolini A yummy broccoli hybrid similar to a raab. With a thinner tender stem, this broccolini can be cooked in whole bunches. Delicious grilled, roasted, or simply dressed in salads, this peppery alternative to broccoli is an instant hit even with picky eaters! A sweet, delicate hybrid that grows well in planters. Can be wintered for late season production in containers or planted in garden for fresh seasonal broccolini. Long Island Green Brussel Sprouts Stocky, semi-dwarf produce lots of tasty green sprouts that doesn’t need support. Separate by a foot and trim lower leaves to encourage multiple sweet sprouts. Cabbage Early season East Coast staple. Medium sized bright green uniform heads from 2-3 lbs. 60 days to maturity when planted a foot apart in well drained soil. Minuteman Cauliflower Early producing variety yielding tightly wrapped flowers with uniform curd. Ideal for roasting and ricing, this tasty head is snow white and ready in 50 days. 1 foot spacing for larger 3 lb heads of cauliflower. Celery This pascal variety produces long thin stalks of brights green after 100 days. So much stronger tasting than store-bought celery, great in a soup or a Caesar! Page 17
Hansel Eggplant If you haven’t grown eggplant before, this is where you start. A medium sized long style eggplant great roasted, grilled or in salads with peppers. This AAS winning plant produces shiny dark purple fruits in finger-like clusters. This compact little plant is great for planters and patios. Early producer for start of season home cooking! Ready in 55 days and loves to spread in a planter or bed. Aunt Molly’s Ground Cherries Having ground cherries in your garden is like having an antique car in your garage. That little extra wow on your garden tour. These tomato plant variants are also known as Cape Gooseberries, and produce a small paper husk covered fruit that tastes of pineapple and cherries, a flavor that changes with ripeness! This fruit is best picked when dried on the plant or as soon as they drop! Used for amazing preserves, but the bowl often empties before the jars are ready! Make an amazing holiday pie with these little gems 60 days after planting. Red Russian Kale Dark green turning red with frost these smoothie staples are popular with any health conscious gardener. Great in slaws, smoothies, salads or as wraps, these punchy leaves will give you a healthy start or finish to the day. When harvesting, cut leaves instead of pulling plant. Purple Vienna Kohlrabi A very mild kohlrabi with purple globes and a mild turnip cabbage flavor. Plant early for a summer crop or in summer for a fall crop. Harvest at a size that matches your meal. To prepare, remove the outer skin and leaves and treat like a turnip or rutabaga with a milder flavour. Great for those picky eaters who won’t finish their turnip! The leaves on this little dandy are fully edible and boast the same health benefits as kale. 50-60 days to maturity in a 14-18” plant. Bright Lights Swiss Chard This AAS winner combines a rainbow of chard. A mild flavored green that is delicious young in salads or wilted with grilled food. Tender stems are edible and a variety of colors adds brightness to patio planters or gardens. Thin for larger leaves, or plant closely for restricted baby greens. This transplant holds up to cold weather on both ends of the planting season. Start harvesting as micro greens all the way through mature. Best if kept to 8-10 inches and harvested by cutting instead of pulling. Cucamelons A user friendly name for Melothria Scabra. A vine grown for its adorable edible fruit. Shaped and looking exactly like tiny grape sized watermelons, these fruit taste like cucumbers! Sharp and clean tasting. These 1” crunchy little treats are amazing in salads, or pickled and served in a martini. You will be the talk of the farmers market, and restaurants will go crazy for your great new market item. Basils Amethyst (7” Square Planter) A dark purple plant with a soft basil taste. Thick fragrant blackish purple leaves stand out with tomatoes and in salads. A must try! Pinch tops to promote branching and new growth. Spicy Globe (7” Square Planter) A compact shrub style basil plant with a zesty bite that will show up in salads and pastas. Grows well in containers or planters and will produce new growth all summer long. Great for herb gardens or as a dark contrast plant that smells amazing! Genovese ( 4” & 5”) This sturdy little plant is great for planters and patio pots. Great performing dark green basil is a perfect utility basil for all types of cooking. 12” Hanging Flower Baskets Our 12” Boutique hanging baskets are grown for months in our climate control greenhouse so you receive healthy, full display baskets that will last all summer. We use a designer planter with colour matched to the flower arrangement. We have 6 combinations of flowers available. Please contact us to discuss color / combinations and bulk orders. All Hanging baskets come with individual plant tags and break-resistant hangers. 12” Hanging Strawberry Baskets Our strawberry planters are a ticking clock item. They sell fast and bring snackers running! We put two varieties of pastry chef quality berries in our boutique basket. These Baskets grow for months in our greenhouse and we take the work out of fresh berries on your cereal all summer! A combination of Delizz and Deep Rose start with a beautiful mix of deep purple and white flowers, yielding two berry varieties. Sweet, with honey flavors and tart and juicy berries will grow for months from this basket! Page 24
12” Hanging Tomato Baskets Our hanging cherry tomato baskets are packed with 3 varieties of tiny snackers. Keep these close to the house to add to salads or lunches. Great for Grilling on the patio and keeping in reach. These varieties are selected for their ability to thrive in a planter and can be moved around as the season changes.
