SUPERIOR KNITWEAR THOUGH THE WAR YEARS

The machine that started it all In its formative years, although concentrating on socks and gloves, the business started

After the war, the family decided to put the machine to commercial use and set up in a garage
in Carnation Street, North Perth, knitting woollen socks and gloves; establishing Superior
Knitting Mills - the name SEKEM evolved from the original name, using the S K M with two e’s.
Initially, the business was run as a partnership between the Dawes
and Lazenby families (relatives of George Lazenby of 007 fame!)

POST WAR GROWTH AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES

In the 1950’s, with peacetime production again
possible, the business forged ahead with the
acquisition of fully automatic programmed knitting
machines from Germany. School jumpers were
added to the knitwear range and staff numbers
increased to 60.
In 1954 factory space doubled and Carnation Street was
renamed Sekem Street.

In 1984, after 61 years of ownership by the Dawes family, the
business was sold by brothers Peter and Bob Dawes, to the
McIntyre family who amalgamated the business with the other
WA iconic brand Burley, forming today’s Burley Sekem Pty Ltd.

The 1950’s to the 1970’s were very successful for Sekem and
thousands of garments were exported to the Eastern States. At
one stage, over 300 different garment styles were offered.
Over 600 schools and vast numbers of sporting teams chose
Sekem for their garments. As Australia’s market leaders in football
guernseys throughout the post war period, the company was well
positioned to tender for the coveted VFL License and indeed, in The McIntyre family ran the business successfully until 1996 when

SEKEM STRIDES INTO A NEW CENTURY

At the turn of the twentieth century, Burley Sekem diversified
into supporter merchandise winning licenses with most
major sporting organisations such as NRL, ARU, FFA, Super
Rugby, Australian Open and State of Origin. Throughout this
period, the AFL and WAFL have been key commercial partners.
The business has weathered many challenges during its 90+ years,
surviving WWII, major industry changes such as woollen to synthetic fibres, At the launch of the inaugural WAFL

years and has worked in consultation with top female players to

Sekem produces a wide range of shorts
from elite on-field shorts to training
and casual shorts.
All styles are proven performers and have been tried and
tested over many years.
With sublimation almost any design is possible. In
other styles, manufactured from dyed fabrics, additional
features can be added like piping or chamois panels.
Most styles are available in a wide range of sizes for
youths, men and women. From sublimated AFL shorts for
elite players to microfibre training shorts, Sekem shorts

The company owes its existence to a sock
machine imported in 1894, and now is a major
supplier of sports socks to the Australian and
New Zealand market.
Sekem socks are used in a wide variety of sports and the
company is in the enviable position of being licensed for all SEKEM ELITE FOOTBALL SOCKS
AFL and NRL teams. Our socks are also sought after every
year at the Australian Open in Melbourne.

size and remain crisp and sharp. Specific colours are also often embedded in vector art.
