Sainte-Mère-Église
This peaceful commune saw its history shaped during
the night of 5 and 6 June 1944, when American paratroopers from the
82nd Airborne Division liberated the village.
In 1962, the release of the film, “The Longest Day” in cinemas actively
contributed to the village’s fame. Today,
John Steele’s parachute is still suspended from the tower of the
church, while “borne 0” (kilometre 0), the Airborne Museum, the
stained glass windows in the Notre-Dame de la Paix church, and the
Paratrooper Memorial at la Fière are an emotional testament to the
historic facts that led to the liberation of Europe.

Carentan les Marais
At the gateway to
Cotentin, this shopping
town has retained its medieval
heritage, which can be
explored by following the “A
pied dans l’histoire” (history on
foot) trail. (see page 28)
In 1944, as a strategic crossing
point in the Baie des Veys,
Carentan had to be liberated
as quickly as possible by the
American allies of the 101st
Airborne Division, in order to
sure up the junction between
Utah Beach and Omaha Beach.
After six days of fierce fighting,
as retold in an episode in the
series Band of Brothers, the
town was finally liberated on
12 June by Lieutenant-Colonel
Cole. Various monuments and
sites can be visited, such as
the D-Day Experience, the
Normandy Victory Museum
and the Manoir de Donville,
which bear witness to this
period of history.

The only D-Day beach
in the Channel, Utah Beach
Utah Beach
saw the landing of no less than
23,250 men, 1,700 combat
vehicles and 1,695 tonnes of
equipment as part of Operation
Overlord launched by the Allies
on 6 June 1944. Don’t miss
the Musée du Débarquement
(Landing Museum) and the
many monuments on the
esplanade. Departing from
the marina, the boat “Belle de
Carentan” offers moving trips
to see the beach from the sea,
as the American soldiers would
have experienced it.
Saint-Martin-de -Varreville
On the beach of Saint-
Martin-de-Varreville, 3 km from
Utah Beach, the monument
pays homage to the 2nd
Armoured Division of Général
Leclerc, who landed here on
1st August 1944. The Leclerc
division liberated Paris on 25
August 1944, then Strasbourg
on 23 November 1944 and
completed its victorious
campaign in Berchtesgaden,
Hitler’s “Eagle’s nest” in Bavaria.

A realistic immersive and emotional visit to understand the D-Day
airborne landing. Two museums to explore: the Dead Man’s Corner for
the German troops and the D-Day Experience for the American troops.
Take a seat in a cabin on British soil for a gripping 3-D briefing then
climb on board a flight simulator in a real C-47: an attraction that is
one of its kind worldwide, regularly praised by veterans for its realism.
You will relive the Channel crossing as a paratrooper.
A room equipped with a giant screen will help you discover the different
stages of the Normandy Landings. Various authentic items from the
collection, such as leather jackets with graffiti by soldiers to illustrate
their exploits, are used to retell the story of Operation Overlord and that
of each of their owners.
Within this museum complex, the large Paratrooper shop presents
authentic items and many other souvenirs connected to the Normandy
Landings.

You are invited to a journey to the heart of history with around 20

hyper-realistic recreations with sound, which recount the daily lives of
civilians and soldiers during the 100 days that followed the Normandy
landings. A focus is given to the Battle of the Hedgerows, a major Event
in the Battle of Normandy.
In the 2,000m2 of exhibition space, 10,000 authentic objects are
presented, including military and everyday items, vehicles and also
several rare pieces, which you can see as part of the scenes. There is an
exhibition highlighting the role of women in the war, and throughout
the visit, you will see moving portraits of veterans (photos, videos,
written testimonials) collected by Florent Plana during his travels.
NEW FOR 2022! Climb on board an authentic landing craft for a
unique audiovisual experience. Later, you’ll approach the scene of a P47
crash in the Normandy hedgerows.

Relive the paratrooper drops thanks to immersive displays
Through spectacular museography that will be mostly renewed by
the end of 2021, the Airborne Museum will allow you to experience
the D-Day landings alongside the American paratroopers. Discover
an exceptional collection of historical objects, climb aboard an
authentic glider and discover a C-47 aircraft that participated in
the D-Day operations.
You will board a real C-47 aircraft at night to experience the parachute
drops of 6 June 1944, landing on the square in Sainte-Mère-Église in
the middle of the fighting for freedom.
Thanks to augmented reality, the interactivity and hyper realist
graphics on the tactile Histopad tablet, you will be transported into the
heart of Normandy in 1944 and experience the highlights of the D-Day
landings, witnessing the landing of the gliders and the setting up of a
field hospital.

Stroll down a typical 1940s street
Over 1,000 m2 of exhibition space, experience life during the Second
World War: real scenes that plunge the visitor into the atmosphere
of the time. Walk through a typical 1940s street reconstructed with
shops and houses of the time.
Discover various vehicles and equipment from the time and a blockhaus
(a fortified structure through which defenders directed gunfire) as part
of the tour, with a view of the anti-tank wall still standing on Quinéville
Beach.

historical site is now a memorial to the American soldiers who fell at Crisbecq

PICAUVILLE
A permaculture garden managed in harmony with nature through the
use of environmentally friendly techniques: mulching and composting,
but no ploughing. Biodiversity takes precedence with numerous annual
and perennial vegetables, medicinal and aromatic plants as well as edible
flowers. Thanks to the creation of a herb spiral, a greenhouse, an orchard,
a pond and an insect hotel, animals and insects live together in harmony.
