THEMATIC ASSEMBLIES We at San Academy Kamakoti Nagar, did not want the children to miss any of the regular activities due to lockdown. So it was decided that we will have virtual assembly for all classes. Many benefits of in- person school assemblies also hold true for virtual school assemblies. Until large gatherings are allowed again, students still need to get some kind of extracurricular support and exposure. The main concept of assembly is to start a day with good thought. The idea of having online assembly was to let children overcome their shyness, learn something in the group and display it. Also this being a testing time for everyone to cope with so much of emotional stress, it was considered that assembly will add on some variety to our online classes. This was the best time to create a good bonding between the class teacher and her students. Students were assigned according to the programmes. Virtual assembly had the regular prayer, thought for the day, news and Thirukkural in their agenda. The encouragement given was quite motivating to the students. Introduction of the theme was done by the class teacher and the students presented an activity on the same theme. The programme ended with the birthday wishes. Each class had one regular thematic assembly. Two common assemblies were held on Father’s Day and International Yoga Day Click the below links to view : Thematic Assembly - Class I to V - https://youtu.be/rpNHkuJt5Es Thematic Assembly - Class VI to X - https://youtu.be/_ldkK_RkTDI Yoga Day Assembly : https://youtu.be/_em6dt0GRcM Father’s Day Assembly : https://youtu.be/Rg8eNZeOhCY Yoga Day Celebration : https://youtu.be/1aSGnwYgO2c
WORLD MILK DAY World Milk Day is an international day established by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations to recognize the importance of milk as a global food. It has been observed on June 1 each year since 2001. Since its inception in 2001, World Milk day celebrations have been joined by many countries. The number is growing each year as the benefits of milk and other dairy products have been actively publicized throughout the world. The students of our school celebrated this day to bring attention to how dairy supports the livelihoods of one billion people. They informed all that India has become the largest producer of milk in the world with over 150 million tonnes of production in the last few years. They motivated each other to inculcate the healthy habit of drinking milk. They spread the message that milk is a rich source of calcium and provides nutrition for a healthy life. Milk contains valuable nutrients and offers a range of health benefits. It is not only consumed by growing children but also by the people of all age groups. It is an important part of our daily diet. It has great nourishing value and a rich source of calcium, protein, and fat etc. All the points were delivered when the students from class 1 A and 2 A gave the speeches on “Why milk is important for children?”, “Health benefits of milk” and “Milk and Milk products”. This was further strengthened when one was enlightened on “The components and byproducts of milk” by class 3 A.

GLOBAL DAY OF PARENTS Global Day of Parents is a United Nations (UN) observance that is celebrated on June 1 each year to honor parents and their commitment to children worldwide. Parents play an important part in shaping one's life. Parents receive the recognition for the role they play in their children's lives on Parents' Day. The day aims to promote responsible parenting and to recognize positive parental role models. It celebrates the special bonds of love between parental figures and their children. It was really heartening when the students of 2 B talked about their parents and why they love them. It must have been a proud moment for the parents. Parental involvement refers to a situation where parents are directly involved in every part of their child’s life. This was showcased in the assembly. CLASS II-B ASSEMBLY
WORLD BICYCLE DAY World Bicycle Day celebrates the uniqueness, longevity and versatility of the bicycle and promotes it as a simple, sustainable, reliable, fun and affordable means of transportation. In 2018 the United Nations declared June 3 as World Bicycle Day. World Bicycle Day is a chance for people around the globe to pay tribute to the bicycle and the many benefits it brings to society. Student from class 3 B advocated that riding a bike can be a profession, a form of entertainment, a tool to freedom, an outlet of expression or quite simply the best way of getting from A to B. Bikes are free to ride, brilliant for your physical and mental health, good for the environment and the economy, and are a stress-free way to get where you’re going. The speech on “Uses of Bicycle” conveyed that they understand that this vehicle does not pollute the air, does not create traffic jams, does not deplete our natural fuels and keeps our body fit and healthy.
WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY World Environment Day is the most renowned day for environmental action. Since 1974, it has been celebrated every year on 5 June; engaging governments, businesses, celebrities and citizens to focus their efforts on a pressing environmental issue. In 2020, the theme is biodiversity–a concern that is both urgent and existential. Recent events, from bushfires in Brazil, the United States and Australia to locust infestations across East Africa–and now, a global disease pandemic–demonstrate the interdependence of humans and the webs of life in which they exist. Nature is sending us a message. The students of classes 1 E, 2 C and 4 B enlightened the peer group on why this day is celebrated and the importance of environment. Their collection of data was quite impressive. The speech about our environment by 6 D was remarkable. They went a step further by taking an oath to keep our environment safe and clean. Their message was simple – “The foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature. Let’s protect our environment.”

WORLD FOOD SAFETY DAY The second World Food Safety Day (WFSD) was celebrated on 7 June 2020 to draw attention and inspire action to help prevent, detect and manage food borne risks, contributing to food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism and sustainable development, all over the world. We at San Academy were not to be left behind. Considering the change in the lifestyle and food habits, this was a novel method to create awareness for the younger generation. The campaign undertaken by the students promoted the idea that food safety is directly responsible for our well being and we should ensure that the food we consume is safe and will not cause damages to our health. Little ones from 1 B spoke about “Why food is important to us?”, “Why we should not waste food?” and “What are the healthy foods?” Students from 4 A talked about “Food production and why everyone need it” and “Avoiding chemicals and contaminated food”. The debate by 7 A made us look at the dilemma of food safety from various angles. The importance of a healthy diet was understood by the children and they helped propagate the message.

WORLD OCEAN DAY World Oceans Day celebrated on 8th June, it was a movement to call on world leaders to protect 30% of our blue planet by 2030. This critical need is called 30x30. By safeguarding at least 30% of our oceans through a network of highly protected areas we can help ensure a healthy home for all! The students of Class 8 came out strongly to say that youth can create a healthier ocean that sustains us all, no matter where we live. When we think of public health risks, we may not think of the ocean. Increasingly, however, the health of the ocean is intimately tied to our health. The speeches on “World Ocean Day” and “How to conserve the ocean resources” gave us multiple reasons why we should celebrate World Oceans Day, i.e, to remind everyone of the major role the oceans have in everyday life. The students showed great understanding of their topic and supported their speech with a PPT presentation. The facts given by 6 A were noteworthy. We were informed that the oceans are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe. The purpose of the day is to inform the public of the impact of human actions on the ocean, develop a worldwide movement of citizens for the ocean, and mobilize and unite the world’s population on a project for the sustainable management of the world's oceans. They are a major source of food and medicine and a critical part of the biosphere. In the end, it is a day to celebrate together the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean. Thought provoking posters were presented by the students. Classes 1 D and 3 D explained to its audience “What are oceans and their importance”. They even stressed upon “Ocean Animals and Plant Conservation” by first giving an introduction to them. Class 3 D even spoke about “Avoiding water pollution”.

WORLD DAY AGAINST CHILD LABOUR The World Day Against Child Labour is an International Labour Organization launched event in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour. World Day Against Child Labour 2020 focused on the impact of crisis on child labour. Students of classes 5 B and 6 B pointed out that whenever there is a crisis the children are often the first to suffer. The crisis can push millions of vulnerable children into child labour. They talked on the topics “Why is Education important for all” and “Laws against child labour. Our students being children themselves were able to bring forth the point that children around the world are routinely engaged in paid and unpaid forms of work that may be harmful to them. However, they are classified as child labourers when they are either too young to work, or are involved in hazardous activities that may compromise their physical, mental, social or educational development. Our students strongly advocated the theory that education is most important tool which will help in eliminating child labour. Stress was made on stringent laws and their enforcement. The assembly by 6 B ended with a Pledge to eradicate child labour. That was quite insightful indeed.

WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY – CLASS IVC Every year, on 14 June, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day (WBDD). The event serves to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood. Donations are essential for trauma patients and people undergoing a variety of situations, including surgeries, transplants, chronic illnesses, blood disorders and cancer. Because over 90% of people who are eligible to donate do not, Baker says there's always a need for donors. The students of San Academy Kamakoti Nagar explained the need for celebrating this day and the importance of blood donation by putting forward the facts of blood such as:- Blood is an important resource, both for planned treatments and urgent interventions. It can help patients suffering from life- threatening conditions live longer and with a higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. Blood is also vital for treating the wounded during emergencies of all kinds (natural disasters, accidents, armed conflicts, etc.) and has an essential, life-saving role in maternal and prenatal care. The topics chosen by class 4 C were “ Why is World Blood Donor Day celebrated? What is the importance of Blood Donation” and “ Blood Types and How it can be donated and can save life?” At the end of the day people realized what a noble act blood donation is.
WORLD WIND DAY Global Wind Day is a worldwide event that occurs annually on 15 June. It is organised by Wind Europe and GWEC. It is a day when wind energy is celebrated, information is exchanged and adults and children find out about wind energy, its power and the possibilities it holds to change the world. It encourages and raises awareness on wind energy, which is a natural form of energy and also sheds light on all the ways that wind energy helps to shape. The students of class 7 C did just that – they raised awareness and helped spread the significance and importance of wind energy through well planned assembly. Their message was – Let’s contribute in Decarbonizing the world and save our Mother Earth. A small model of a wind mill was shown and some thought provoking facts were given in the form of a PPT presentation. A very informative assembly. INTERNATIONAL PICNIC DAY International Picnic Day celebrates gathering together outdoors to eat and enjoy one another's company, which has traditionally been called Picnic. The true origin of International Picnic Day is unknown, but can be traced back to the end of the French Revolution and the Victorian Era. Picnics were ways for people to escape the restrictions of etiquette and formality. As an informal food holiday, there are few rules and lots of options. International Picnic Day is observed on June 18th each year. When we celebrated this year, students from 1 C came up with stories about their picnics with family. While the children talked one could realize that it is very popular among kids as it is more of a fun event. Well, what better way to relax and get out and enjoy the day than eating outside with friends and family. It was obvious that the tiny tots enjoyed this particular assembly. Class I – C ASSEMBLY
WORLD MUSIC DAY It's very challenging to truly describe music in words. But in the most basic terms, music can be described as an art form and cultural activity, whose medium is sound. There’s nothing in the world like the sound of your favorite song coming on, it just gets right into your head and your body and makes you move. Or maybe it takes you on a journey to a faraway place and time, where you languish in a memory of times gone by and people who are no longer present. So we at San Academy decided to celebrate the day which is an activity which soothes us without any price tag. The students of classes 2 D, 3 C and 6 C explained the meaning of music and why do we need it (elaborating on “Music and its importance to our soul and health”). A programme on music is not complete without a performance (vocal or instrumental). On students did not fail us as we had some live recital. Class II – D ASSEMBLY

INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST DRUG ABUSE The United Nations’ (UN) International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking falls on June 26 each year to raise awareness of the major problem that illicit drugs represent to society. This day is supported by individuals, communities and various organizations all over the world. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has, over the years, been actively involved in launching campaigns to mobilize support for drug control. Through their speech and PPT Presentation on “Effects and cause of illicit trafficking” students of Class 10 helped create an awareness of this disturbing issue. They had collected facts and strongly put forth that drug abuse is one of the most serious health problems. Besides causing serious diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, tuberculosis, it has several side effects in the form of economic loss, antisocial behaviour such as stealing, violence and crime besides social stigma and overall downfall of the society. Though a difficult topic the class had pulled it off with aplomb Class X – A ASSEMBLY
WORLD ASTERIOD DAY Asteroid Day is a dynamic awareness and educational program to inspire the world about asteroids – their role in the formation of our solar system, how we can use their resources, how asteroids can pave the way for future exploration and finally how we can protect our planet from asteroid impacts. Asteroid Day events are held on 30 June each year to mark the anniversary of the 1908 Tunguska impact. Students from classes 7 D and 9 A raised awareness of the threat and opportunity posed by the numerous rocky bodies zooming through space. They explained what an asteroid is and the role of asteroids in the formation of our solar system and advances in technology to better detect, track and analyze asteroids and review our ability to deflect a rogue asteroid headed towards Earth. The speech and the Sci-Fi facts given on asteroids were not only informative but they were interesting too. PPT on ‘Space and Asteroids’ created an interest in astronomy among students. FATHER’S DAY CELEBRATION Being a father is a tough, but incredibly fulfilling job, and letting Dad know how important he is makes his job even more rewarding. Finding the right words to describe how grateful you are to be able to call your father "Dad" can be difficult, but it becomes easy when you take the first step. A father’s selfless love is pivotal in nurturing the child and there could not be a more universal celebration than the one that celebrates the accomplishments and efforts of Father. Celebrating this precious bond, we at San Academy Kamakoti Nagar, dedicated this day to honour them. The Speeches and poems on “My father – My hero”, “My father- My role model, philosopher, my guide” by various classes was a fitting tribute to the parent. ONLINE CLASSES With the lockdown in place, kids are stuck at home with limited options on entertainment and learning. Most governments around the world have temporarily closed educational institutions in an attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the school closed, the Management decided to continue imparting knowledge ensuring that learning never stops. Students were first made aware of several learning platforms available to them for watching lesson-related videos. Later we started implementing online classes for the benefit of children. We initiated them using Zoom platform and then later switched over to Webex amidst security concerns. The content for each lesson/topic was first uploaded in the YouTube and the links were sent to parents. The virtual classroom connected the students with their teachers. The remote learning was made interesting with interactive sessions with the help of video, audio, screen sharing, brainstorming sessions and the chat options. The response from the students was quite overwhelming, though they did miss attending classes with their friends and interacting with their teachers personally. We are indeed thankful for the cooperation of the parents, doing the balancing act of juggling their own workloads with the educational needs of their children. Appreciation should also be extended to the family members of the teachers, whose moral and technical support gave them the confidence to move towards e-teaching. ONLINE TESTS Trying to keep up the normal schedule of our educational calendar, our school decided to conduct the Unit tests earlier this month. This did pose its own set of challenges and a wide survey was done to select the portal which would be user friendly and could be easily accessible for both teachers and students. Google Classroom and Google Form was chosen for the same. Although kids are widely held to be more tech savvy than adults, there is always the exception. So orientation was done by our computer teacher, Mrs. Abirami. We are pleased that the tests were held without any hitch. VALUE EDUCATION In today’s world, where corruption, violence, unrest have become so prevalent in our society, schools have an added responsibility to ensure that value education as a subject is taken seriously as a part of the curriculum to produce not just educated but also responsible citizens with insightful minds who believe in giving back to the society. Values should be integrated in various aspects of life. It goes without saying that values go a long way in building a person’s character. Education without strong character is like a ship without a captain. Good education is inconceivable if it fails to inculcate values which are indispensable for a holistic life.. Value based education can shape the future of children and add purpose to their life. It helps them learn to live the right way of life. School is the place where the child spends most of his or her learning years. San Academy provided YouTube videos made by our teachers to impart Value Education.. Our teachers addressed philosophically challenging issues for the children and dealt on values like honesty, punctuality, positive thinking, social responsibility, sense of ownership, self esteem and confidence.
CCA CLASSES Our online education doesn’t stop with classroom studies only. School today is no longer confined to class room instruction. For the all round development of the students, San Academy lays significant emphasis on the Co-curricular activities to enhance their creativity and hone their hidden talents. Hence videos were prepared and video links were sent to children for karate, silambam, aerobics, chess PT, western dance, ballet, classical music. Students didn’t miss out on their favourite activity. PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT We decided to engage the students in a more positive manner by conducting Personality Development sessions with topics relevant to the age group. The teachers of our school prepared innovative and attractive seminars and kept alive the students’ interest. The diversity in the online sessions promoted a sense of well-being among students. It provided the essential elements that make the biggest impression on the children. DIGITAL LIBRARY Digital libraries are also referred to as electronic libraries, virtual libraries, systems, libraries without walls or hybrid libraries. A digital library, unlike other forms of media such as print or microform, is a specialized form of library that encompasses a collection of digital assets. Such digital objects can be in the form of visual material, text, audio or video that are in electronic media forms. As it is a library, it also has features to organize, store and retrieve media or files that make up the collection. Content in a digital library may also be stored locally or accessed by means of networks when stored remotely.
DIGITAL LIBRARY A digital library has a number of advantages not found in a traditional library. Some of the advantages are that there are no physical limits to information storage, materials can be accessed around the clock by multiple users, and they feature efficient information retrieval mechanisms. Our school introduced the students to myON, a special library with a varied collection of digital books. It is user friendly and the students are comfortable searching and retrieving the books in the collection. A free library with 162 registered users from our school in the beginning of this month. Orientation was held for both students and teachers on how to use it. While registering the reading ability of the child is assessed and a score is given. When a child searches for a topic, book according to his set PD level are shown. This is a very expedient way, as the children of the same age group may have different difficulty level. Same story can be presented with differences in complexity in sentences and vocabulary. The main purpose of the site is to eliminate the fear of reading. Thus the books are graphically illustrated has audio enabled features. Some hallmarks of the library is that we can pause our reading, highlight our reading, hear the pronunciation of words and find meanings. At the end of the book, a quiz can be taken to test our understanding of the topic. We hope that the students take advantage of this library for entertainment or furthering their knowledge. One advantage is that the app can be installed and 20 books can be downloaded at a time and can be read offline.
WORKSHOP FOR TEACHERS In a major development, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) launched online teacher training programs to help teachers to understand how they can gear up their teaching methods. It was clear that the COVID pandemic has utterly disrupted an education system that many asserts was already losing its relevance. The training sessions were conducted online. Enhancing professional development digitally is a need in the times of COVID-19, where social distancing and remote interactions is the new normal. Technology enabled teacher development programs/training can take a very wide variety of forms, with concomitant advantages of convenience, scalability, and adaptability. The teacher courses are aimed to enable teachers ‘to teach better and lead improved learning outcomes.’ Its other objective is to ‘instill new knowledge and skills as per the demand to keep them at par with what is expected’ and ‘help teachers revise and refresh the knowledge make it more practical.’ Some of our teachers were greatly profited by the technology-enabled teachers training. WEBINARS A webinar was conducted by QShala for the benefit of teachers before the commencement of June online classes. It had an in- depth analysis of the shift of education from the physical classroom to online teaching. They had given orientation on how teaching could be made fun for the teachers as students were having a great learning experience using technology. The interactive session was quite enlightening, crisp and practical.
GUEST LECTURES In the midst of the Corona virus lockdown of 2020 our school arranged for a few guest lectures on various topics for both parents and students. They acted as stress busters in this traumatic period when the whole family had to make many adjustments. The guest speakers shared their perspectives on various topics and motivated the students through online videos. As the situation has blocked a huge channel of communication a variety would definitely pep up the day for all. The one hour sessions helped both kids and adults to find space for niche interests in a more creative manner as there were videos on art, terrace garden, eye exercises, clay modeling, doodle art, bottle art, and yoga. Students could feast on magic show, theatre, storytelling and music. It was a great opportunity for young and old alike to hear words of wisdom and knowledge from an expert in the field. It was an avenue to let the children follow their interests, and also provide encouragement as they engage with the things they’re most passionate about. It was a time to enjoy this indoor learning time together as a family. It was a significant way to turn this crisis into a series of ”teachable moments” that may have a bigger impact on one and all.

Keeping the pandemic in mind, it is also our responsibility to ensure that our students and parents are safe and are aware of all the precautions to be taken during this situation. We are a ‘one family as a whole’ and mutual cooperation and effective understanding will help us fight together the pandemic and at the same time grow academically. The PTM was held on 13.06.2020, virtually. To avoid excessive traffic, the meeting was held in three batches. Separate links were created for each meeting and parents were intimated. The PTM was conducted smoothly with parents voicing their concern and the class teacher addressing the issue. We are grateful for the understanding shown by the parents during the Parent-Teacher meeting. PARENTS FEEDBACK Online classes could be coined as a joint effort by parents and teachers. In these unprecedented times, teachers and parents are putting their best foot forward to uphold the value of education. It is a great pleasure when we receive recognition and support from parents when they laud the productivity and effectiveness of e-learning and online education.

ENVIRONMENT DAY QUIZ June 5th was celebrated as World Environment Day worldwide, and at San Academy we took this opportunity to spread awareness on the importance of our environment. To celebrate the same E.F.I (Environmentalist Foundation of India) conducted a quiz on the topic "Environment conservation is 'No choice, No compulsion, It's common sense' ". Being a wildlife conservation and habitat restoration group, they wanted to connect students with social influencers through a nature quiz. They organized a virtual quiz for our School Students through Google meet. The quiz was held on 27th June (Saturday) for the duration of 45 minutes for classes 5 to 8. It had three rounds (of 15 minutes each) on Wildlife-Water- Waste of India. The Winners will be awarded Bird nests and stray feeders after school reopens. All participants would also get an invite to join Cyclakes tour of Palliakaranai marsh in September. This programme helped in increasing student interest in conservation and made them realize that they have to join hands with others in volunteering to protect our environment.
VIRTUAL CLUB ACTIVITY & INTRA COMPETITION We resumed the Intra and Club activity in the month of June. It was conducted on Fridays instead of our usual Thursdays. The topic of the month was Eco-Club. YouTube links were sent to children and they were watched on 12th and 19th June. The virtual Intra- competition followed on 26th. The pictures were sent on Monday after the students worked on them over the weekend. This was yet another learning venture for us to conduct Club and Intra competition virtually. The success brought us immense satisfaction. The main theme of Eco-Club was – “Earth Day – Love, Honour and Respect our Mother Earth”. The students were enlightened on what an Earth Day is and why we celebrate it. The YouTube video links shared explained how we can take care of our planet and make it a safer place to live. They learnt about water conservation, energy conservation and recycling. On the competition front students of Classes 1 and 2 had colouring activity. They had to draw and colour a beautiful garden. They could use any medium of colours (crayons, colour pencils or sketch). They were judged on usage of relevant colours, creativity and presentation. Students from class 3 had to prepare a chart on the 3 R’s – Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Judging criteria was content, use of language, creative ideas and presentation. Class 4 had collage making on the topic “Save Trees”. This was to be accompanied by 5 lines on the same topic. Greeting cards from class 5 had the theme “Save Water” preferably using biodegradable materials. Judging was on the basis of adherence to theme, content, presentation and creativity for both 4th and 5th Std.
VIRTUAL CLUB ACTIVITY & INTRA COMPETITION Writing skills of students of class VI were tested when they wrote an essay on any one of the four topics given. They were judged on adherence to the theme, content presentation vocabulary and creative solutions. Creativity of Class 7 students was tested when they had to design a logo on “Air Quality” on any one of the given topics. Class 8 had poster making with slogan “Waste Pollution”.
