Sainte-Mère-Église visit taste take pictures This quiet village has seen its story change in the morning of June, 6th 1944 when 82nd Airborne paratroopers liberated the village. The dummy paratrooper hanging on the steeple of the church, representing John Steele, the Borne 0 of the Way of Liberty, Airborne Museum, two modern stained-glass windows in Holly Mother of Peace-church or Paratrooper’s Memorial at la Fière are tributes to this event. Carentan les Marais At the gateway of Cotentin, in Baie des Veys, this town with its unusual marina has kept a rich heritage in testimony of the past centuries. Self guided tour about the heritage of Carentan. Ask for your plan in the tourist office (see page 26). In 1944, Carentan, strategic area in Baie des Veys, had to be quickly liberated by American discover 101st Airborne paratroopers in order to join Utah and Omaha beaches. After 6 days of fierce sail fights, it was liberated on June, 12th by lieutenant colonel Cole. A monument stands on his shop honor there and an episode of TV series Band of Brothers tells this story. Utah Beach Unique landing beach in la Manche, Utah Beach has seen 23 250 men, 1 700 war vehicles and 1 695 tons of equipment during Operation OVERLORD launched by the Allies on June, 6th 1944 in Normandy. Do not miss the D-Day Landing museum with its esplanade and its monuments. 08
Close by, on Saint- Martin-de-Varreville beach the monument pays tribute to 2nd Armoured Division of French General Leclerc. They landed there on August, 1st 1944. After several fighting in Normandy, Leclerc Division liberated Paris on August, 25th 1944, then, Strasbourg on November, 23rd 1944 and Saint-Martin-de ended its victorious campaign in Berchtesgaden, Hitler’s eagle Varreville nest in Germany. 09
