All shark and loca8on pictures in this PDF ©Shane Wasik Expedi4on Basking Sharks This flagship tour and the ul8mate mix of adventure, ac8vity and Hebridean wildlife. These trips are organised at the peak shark 8me and suit photographers, wildlife enthusiasts or those who want to maximise their 8me in the Hebrides. The tour is focused on basking sharks with a flexible i8nerary around the experiences listed below. The week long tours have a high success rate of great encounters. There is amazing wildlife, landscapes and coastline as this is right on the edge of the north Atlan8c. This means the weather can be variable and over a week you have the best opportunity to take advantage of the weather windows! Of the different op8ons available from the operator, the week long tour is one they recommend to everyone, and have the longest running success and sa8sfac8on from this trip. Simply speaking it's the best trip to do, no ques8on! Our operator is the only company to offer specialist basking shark tours from Oban, Scotland. They use a fast and comfortable vessel and the crew members are highly trained and experienced. They use a tailored code of prac8ce to ensure that our encounters do not impact the sharks. In addi8on to the sharks, we can snorkel and swim with the playful seals in the area too. The area is known as a wildlife hotspot where we can see many species of cetaceans, seals, eagles, o[ers and red deer. Experience the exhilara8on of swimming with Scotland’s largest shark, encounters with other wildlife, the stunning Sco\sh scenery and explora8on of remote areas - this trip will leave you with memories for life. 0301 - 221 00 | scubatravel.se info@scubatravel.se facebook.com/scubatravel.se
About the tour During the week tour we will be spending 8-9 hours at sea. This is a completely wild experience, not a zoo or an aquarium so there are no guarantees of sigh8ngs. However, the area has been designated a ‘hotspot’ for sharks and given the distance we will cover, you have the best chance of seeing sharks. We are very aware of human ac8vi8es affec8ng marine life. The staff have qualifica8ons in marine biology and a passion for sharks and marine conserva8on. Our operator has developed it's own code of conduct to ensure the ac8vi8es do not affect the sharks. The skippers are highly experienced in the local waters and have run charter boats for many years. The guides all have marine science and professional diving qualifica8ons along with a passion for the ocean. The main focus of this trip is the basking sharks, but the area we will be in is known as one of the best places for wildlife watching. There are chances of spo\ng the following: Common and bo[lenose dolphins and porpoises, Minke whales and even orca (killer whales) are spo[ed on occasion, common and grey seals, o[ers, golden and white-tailed sea eagles, seabirds such as puffins, fulmars, gannets, skuas, guillemots and razorbills. Rare visitors include leatherback turtles and sunfish (Mola mola). 0301 - 221 00 | scubatravel.se info@scubatravel.se facebook.com/scubatravel.se
Basking sharks The basking shark (Cetorhinus maximus) is the biggest fish in Scotland and the UK, and one of only three plankton ea8ng (plank8vore) sharks worldwide. They are the second biggest shark in the en8re ocean- only the tropical whale shark is bigger. These gentle giants grow over 10m (33j) long and weigh up to several tonnes. Scotland has some of the richest cold waters in the world and every spring, oceanic and weather cycles create op8mal condi8ons for explosive blooms of plankton. With increased availability of upwelled nutrients, higher sunlight and warmer temperatures, the plant based phytoplankton generates large blooms. The animal based zooplankton feeds on the phytoplankton and 8mes their cycle to take advantage of this food source. Then in turn we have basking sharks migra8ng to our water to feed on the rich zooplankton. The main migra8on in spring coincides with the first plankton bloom of the year with the peak of numbers showing in mid summer, then the southerly migra8on occurs around September and October. On their winter migra8on journey the tags that have remained a[ached have show their journey across the Atlan8c towards Newfoundland and offshore towards the Bay of Biscay and Azores. 0301 - 221 00 | scubatravel.se info@scubatravel.se facebook.com/scubatravel.se

You can also ask him about GoPro filming and freediving, two of his favourite things to do. As early as 9 years old, Tomas started free diving with Nisses Freedivers club. As a 15-year-old, Tomas became a free diver instructor for children between 9-15 years (on a voluntary basis) and 19 years later you can s8ll find Tomas at Nisse’s on Friday evenings. Years went by and eventually Tomas switched over to scuba diving. He took a number of courses, with the ul8mate goal of becoming a PADI Dive Master. His interest in underwater photography has only grown stronger over the years, and ajer a shark expedi8on to the southern Red Sea Tomas understood that underwater photography was his future.
